Prevalence of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes at King Abdulaziz University Hospital: A Retrospective Analysis.

Introduction Osteoporosis mainly affects postmenopausal women and is characterized by decreasing bone mass and an increased risk of fracture. As populations age, it becomes more common and is frequently missed until fractures happen. Simultaneously, there is conflicting evidence about the relationship between bone health and diabetes, a chronic metabolic illness, with varying effects on the skeletal system. In light of the rising incidence of both disorders, this study examines the relationship between diabetes and osteoporosis/osteopenia in patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH

Candidemia in a Preterm Neonate at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, South West, Nigeria.

A 36-week-old male preterm low birth weight infant was diagnosed with candidemia at a tertiary hospital in South-West Nigeria. The mother had antepartum and untreated intrapartum vaginal candidiasis. The delivery of the baby was per vaginal with the head presenting. The baby developed features of neonatal sepsis shortly after delivery, which did not respond to the conventional antibiotics used locally for the management of neonatal sepsis. Candida albicans was later isolated from the baby's blood culture. Subsequently, the baby made remarkable improvement to oral fluconazole therapy thereafter

Sarcopenic obesity is independently associated with frailty in geriatric outpatients: A cross-sectional study from university hospital.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is an often-overlooked problem in older adults, and ultrasonography (US) is one of the methods that can be used for diagnosis. Frailty, another geriatric syndrome in older adults, is an important clinical marker associated with many physical and cognitive conditions. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between frailty and SO, diagnosed with different muscle mass measurement methods. METHODS: A total of 142 patients with obesity between the ages of 65 and 88 years who were admitted to the geriatric outpatient clinic were included. SO was

Isometric Back Extensor Endurance and Chronic Low Back Pain in University Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

CONTEXT: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common problem among university athletes, negatively affecting their performance and overall health. Deconditioned back muscles due to CLBP can reduce endurance. However, there is limited research on CLBP in university athletes, especially comparing those with and without the condition. Additionally, the connection between back muscle endurance and CLBP in university athletes is unclear, and there is insufficient data on normal levels of back muscle endurance. The present study aimed to establish normal back extensor muscle endurance values in univers

Differential Associations of Anticipatory and Consummatory Anhedonia With Depression and Social Anxiety Symptoms: A Network Analysis of University Students.

BACKGROUND: Depression and social anxiety are frequently co-occurring conditions that significantly impact young people. Anhedonia may be important to consider in early interventions for these conditions, but the roles of specific dimensions of anhedonia-anticipatory and consummatory-are not well understood. This study explored the symptom connectivity of depression and social anxiety in university students, focusing on how the two dimensions of anhedonia relate to symptoms of both conditions. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional network analysis of data from 672 university students (19-24

Risk of Infections Among Contacts of COVID-19 Cases in the Healthcare Setting: Experience of One University Hospital.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The onset of infection in patients in contact with a COVID-19-positive index case in healthcare settings depends on intrinsic factors such as demographic factors, immune status, severity of underlying diseases, and comorbidities. Critical extrinsic factors for transmission, especially in hospitals, are length of exposure and distance. This study aimed to determine the risk factors of COVID-19 infections in contacts of COVID-19 index cases by conducting a prospective cohort study. METHODS: The prospective cohort study included 186 index patients with confirmed COVID-19 a

A comprehensive analysis of transfusion trends and patient outcomes in blood utilization practices at Jimma university medical center.

In resource-limited settings like Ethiopia, ensuring adequate blood availability and optimizing its use remain a significant challenge. Comprehensive studies on blood utilization practices are essential for minimizing unnecessary transfusions and enhancing transfusion services, yet such research remains limited. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the efficiency of blood utilization, analyse transfusion trends, and assess patient outcomes. A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted at the largest referral hospital in Southwest Ethiopia, from June 1 to August 30, 2023. Data were

INTRODUCTION: Chengdu hosted the 31st Summer World University Games in 2023. The movement and gathering of attendees from other cities and countries posed challenges to local public health, including an increased risk of infectious diseases or outbreaks. To manage these risks, a syndromic surveillance system targeting infectious diseases was established. This system aimed to identify suspicious cases and outbreaks early, enabling timely measures and minimizing their impact. This article reviews the surveillance mechanism, analyzes the surveillance data, and evaluates the system's effectiveness

Comparison of two different scabies outbreaks in health care workers: An observational study in an Italian University Hospital.

The reapplication of an ad hoc prevention protocol during a scabies outbreak at a University Hospital in 2024 resulted in a substantial reduction in scabies cases and limited the spread, compared to the previous outbreak in 2022. The protocol's effectiveness, demonstrated by lower prevalence and confined transmission, confirms its potential as a replicable model for the management of nosocomial scabies in health care settings, especially in the absence of standardized international guidelines.
