BACKGROUND: Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative bacterium causing three clinical syndromes namely, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin sepsis and primary sepsis. Primary sepsis exhibits mortality rates exceeding 50%, particularly in the immunocompromised. Vibrio vulnificus is transmitted via consumption of contaminated seafood and contaminated seawater skin exposure. We describe a rare case of an immunocompetent male presenting with an atypical Vibrio vulnificus infection, culminating in severe pneumonia requiring intensive care.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46 year old Indian male dockyard worker, a no

Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) is the main transmitter of pathogens that cause human diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, zika and yellow fever. Faced with this problem, this study aims to select fungi with entomopathogenic potential against Ae. aegypti and develop formulations that optimize the control action of entomopathogenic fungi in the semi-field condition. 23 fungal strains native from Amazon were inoculated in Potato-Dextrose-Agar (PDA) culture medium for 14 days and then transferred by scraping to tubes containing 0.9% NaCl solution. To obtain the larvae, eggs were collect…

INTRODUCTION: In 1980, partners initiated a mobile simplified EPI (Expanded programme on immunization) strategy for immunizing, with mobile teams, rural and urban populations in Western Africa. This strategy delivered EPI vaccines in two sessions: 1) 3-8 month-old children: BCG-Diphteria Tetanus Pertussis + reinforced killed Polio vaccine; 2) 9-15 month-old children: Diphteria Tetanus Pertussis + reinforced killed Polio vaccine, Measles-Yellow Fever. This strategy was compared to WHO-UNICEF extended EPI strategy, but results were never published in the context of a planned rapid polio eradicat…

BACKGROUND: Currently, the identification of infectious disease re-emergence is performed without describing specific quantitative criteria … called RED Alert to detect re-emergence for the following 4 diseases: measles, cholera, dengue, and yellow fever. We evaluated the performance of the machine learning models for re-emergence detection and reviewed the output of the tool through a number of case studies.
RESULTS: Our supervised learning models were able to identify 82%-90% of the local re-emer …

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquito-borne viruses including Zika (ZIKV), dengue (DENV), yellow fever (YFV), and chikungunya (CHIKV) have emerged and re-emerged globally, resulting in an elevated burden of human disease. Aedes aegypti is found worldwide in tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate areas. The characterization of mosquito blood meals is essential to understand the transmission dynamics of mosquito-vectored pathogens.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we report Ae. aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus host feeding patterns and arbovirus transmission in Northern Mexico using a metaba…

The current outbreak of yellow fever virus (YFV) that is afflicting Brazil since the end of 2016 probably originated from a re-introduction of YFV from endemic areas into the non-endemic Southeastern Brazil. However, the lack of genomic sequences from endemic regions hinders the tracking of YFV's dissemination routes. We assessed the origin and spread of the ongoing YFV Brazilian outbreak analyzing a new set of YFV strains infecting humans, non-human primates (NHPs) and mosquitoes sampled across five Brazilian states from endemic and non-endemic regions between 2015 and 2018. We found two YFV …

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting several diseases, including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, and yellow fever, etc. Release of larvivorous fishes is one of the cheapest method of vector management approach, with long suppression of mosquito population. The present study identifies the native larvivorous fishes and evaluates their potential larvivoracity for biological control of mosquito larvae in an endemic malarious region.
METHODS: During the year 2012-13, an ecological descriptive study was carried out in diverse aquatic habitats of fish speci…

BACKGROUND: Historically, mosquito control programs successfully helped contain malaria and yellow fever, but recent efforts have been unable to halt the spread of dengue, chikungunya, or Zika, all transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Using a dengue transmission model and results from indoor residual spraying (IRS) field experiments, we investigated how IRS-like campaign scenarios could effectively control dengue in an endemic setting.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: In our model, we found that high levels of household coverage (75% treated once per year), applied proactively before the typical dengue seas…

We hypothesize that cross-reactive antibodies impact antibody response to YF at the point vaccination in a concentration-dependent manner by altering both vaccine uptake and the innate immune response by antigen presenting cells. The geographical distribution of schizophrenia was previously shown to correlate with the global distribution of tick-borne flaviviruses. The correlation suggests a natural resistance gene to flaviviruses could be involved in schizophrenia. The flavivirus resistance gene, Flv, a gene found in wild mice and certain in-bred strains, confers resistance to flaviviruses through the interaction of cellular proteins with the flaviviral 3' untranslated regions (UTRs). Although the sequence and product of Flv are unknown, translation elongation factor alpha-1 (EF-1) is a protein known to interact with

BACKGROUND: Arboviral diseases caused by dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV), yellow fever (YFV), Rift Valley fever (RVFV), and Zika (ZIKV) viruses are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality across Africa. Clinical presentations range from self-limiting febrile illness to fatal haemorrhagic syndromes, encephalitis, and chronic arthropathy, yet the factors that govern who develops severe disease remain poorly defined in African settings. We set out to synthesise what is currently known about the viral and host immune determinants of clinical severity for all five arboviruses in Afr…

Here we report a familial cluster of 3 cases of coxsackievirus B3 infection: a recent history of illness in a woman's 3-year-old son with a coxsackievirus B3-positive stool culture indicated that he probably infected his mother at home during her last week of pregnancy. Consequently, she delivered an infected neonate who developed severe hepatitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and bilateral intracranial hemorrhage. The neonate remained well for the first 2 days of life. On the third day, he developed fever (39 degrees C) and poor peripheral circulation. On the fourth day, he develop

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic posed a major public health challenge with varying devastating effects on the global community. Vaccination is the most effective measure in combating this pandemic. A major challenge, especially in resource-limited settings, was the shortage of the vaccines. However, evidence by WHO in the use of fractionated doses in combating yellow fever prompted the evaluation of the safety and immunogenicity of fractionated doses of COVID-19 vaccines (ChAd0x1, AD26.COV2.S, and BNT162B2) among Nigerian adults (18-65 years).

BACKGROUND: Emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases (VBDs) pose a recurring threat to tropical countries, mainly due to the abundance and distribution of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is a vector of the Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever arboviruses.
METHODS: Female 3-5 day-old Ae. aegypti were distributed into two experimental groups: group I-survey of cultivable bacteria; sucrose group: fed only on sucrose, i.e., non-blood-fed (UF); blood-fed group: (i) fed with non-infected blood (BF); (ii) fed with blood infected with the Zika virus (BZIKV); (iii) pretreated with penic…
