Moderating and mediating effects of resilience between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms in Chinese children.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma has been regarded as a risk factor for adolescent depression. Resilience has been found to be a protective factor for adolescent mental health. However, it is not clear about the role of resilience in the relationship between childhood trauma and depression. METHODS: School attending adolescents (n=6406) aged 9-17 years were drawn from five primary schools, three middle schools and two high schools in Wuhan city of China in 2015. The participants were invited to complete self-report questionnaires, including demographics, childhood trauma, resilience and depressiv

The impacts of institutional child sexual abuse: A rapid review of the evidence.

While awareness of institutional child sexual abuse has grown in recent years, there remains limited understanding of its occurrence and outcomes as a distinct form of abuse. Drawing on research commissioned by the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, this article presents a rapid review of available evidence on the impacts of institutional abuse on victim/survivors. Literature searches identified 75 sources spanning international peer reviewed work and reports to Government that document or quantify the impacts of mostly historical child sexual abuse

Ear for recovery: protocol for a prospective study on parent-child communication and psychological recovery after paediatric injury.

INTRODUCTION: One in six children who have been admitted to hospital with an injury develop persistent stress symptoms that put their development at risk. Parents play a crucial role in children's psychological recovery, however, it is unknown how specific parenting behaviours can help or hinder. We aim to describe the nature and quantity of parent-child communication after a child has been injured, and to examine how these interactions are related to children's psychological recovery. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We are conducting a prospective observational study among children aged 3-16 years, wh

Surveying Indian gay men for coping skills and HIV testing patterns using the internet.

BACKGROUND: Surveying vulnerable and incarcerated populations is often challenging. Newer methods to reach and collect sensitive information in a safe, secure, and valid manner can go a long way in addressing this unmet need. Homosexual men in India live with inadequate social support, marginalization, and lack legal recognition. These make them less reachable by public health agencies, and make them more likely to continue with high-risk behaviors, and contract human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIMS: To understand coping skills and HIV testing patterns of homosexual men versus heterosexual

A pilot study of the experience of family caregivers of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer using a mixed methods approach.

CONTEXT: Pancreatic cancer presents a wide spectrum of significant symptomatology. The high symptom burden, coupled with a rapidly fatal diagnosis, limits preparation or time for adjustment for both patients and their family caregivers. From the initial diagnosis and throughout the illness experience, the physical and emotional demands of caregiving can predispose caregivers themselves to illness and a greater risk of mortality. Understanding the negative and positive aspects of caregiving for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer will inform interventions that promote positive caregiver ou

Cardiac vagal control as a prospective predictor of anxiety in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Low cardiac vagal control (CVC) has been associated with state and trait anxiety and anxiety spectrum disorders. Studies indicate that diagnosis and treatments for breast cancer may be associated with anxiety. The current study examined whether CVC prospectively predicted a trajectory of change in anxiety following breast cancer diagnosis. Forty-three women diagnosed with non-metastatic breast cancer completed the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Perceived Stress Scale, and a 5-min resting electrocardiographic (ECG) segment was recorded. Self-report measures were completed approximately e

Tourette syndrome, parenting aggravation, and the contribution of co-occurring conditions among a nationally representative sample.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that parents of a child with Tourette Syndrome (TS) have lower self-concepts, higher caregiver burden, and more difficulties with home activities. However, the contributions of TS and mental, emotional, or behavioral (MEB) conditions to family functioning are difficult to identify from previous research due to relatively small TS sample sizes and high rates of co-occurring conditions within samples of children with TS. OBJECTIVE: The current study hypothesized that families of children with TS would report significantly more family functioning difficulti

Long-term psychological distress in women at risk for hereditary breast cancer adhering to regular surveillance: a risk profile.

BACKGROUND: Some women at risk for hereditary breast cancer are at increased risk of psychological distress. In order to tailor support for individual women, the availability of a tool enabling the identification of psychologically vulnerable women at an early stage is warranted. The objectives of this study were (1) to explore long-term psychological distress in women at risk for hereditary breast cancer adhering to regular surveillance, and (2) to identify women being vulnerable for long-term psychological distress, defined in terms of a multifactorial risk profile. METHODS: General distres

Adverse psychosocial working conditions and poor quality of life among financial service employees in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: Workers in the financial services sector are exposed to great stress at work. This study investigates whether exposure to adverse psychosocial work conditions is independently associated with poor health-related physical and mental quality of life among financial services workers. METHODS: We studied a nationwide representative sample of 2,054 workers of a large Brazilian state bank in 2008. Adverse psychosocial work conditions were investigated by the Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) scale and the Job content questionnaire (JCQ). Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed us

Flexible and tenacious goal pursuit lead to improving well-being in an aging population: a ten-year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that tendencies to tenaciously pursue goals and flexibly adapt goals independently relate to well-being in adults in mid-to-late life, but research has not tested whether these tendencies interact. For example, tenacity may only predict well-being in combination with flexibility. This research tests whether these tendencies interact to predict changes in health-related outcomes. METHODS: A large cohort of people (n = 5,666), initially aged 55-56, completed measures of flexibility, tenacity, health-related outcomes (physical health, depression, hostility

The tsunami--26 December 2004--experiences from one place of recovery, Stockholm, Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: The natural disaster in South-East Asia had a great impact in Sweden affecting many individuals and families. In this paper, a series of strategies from Ersta Association for Diaconal Work (Ersta) are described to reach survivors by the tsunami of 26 December 2004, from January 2005 to August 2007. AIMS: To find out what needs the survivors had and how professionals may work and take care of their needs during similar events in the future. BACKGROUND: An immediate empathic effort took place at Ersta; thanks to good funding and many qualified professionals. This is a retrospecti

Practitioner review: Children in foster care--vulnerabilities and evidence-based interventions that promote resilience processes.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of children are placed in foster care (i.e., a kin or nonkin family home other than the biological parent) due to experiences of physical, sexual, emotional, or psychological abuse, and/or neglect. Children in foster care are at increased risk for a host of negative outcomes encompassing emotional, behavioral, neurobiological, and social realms. METHODS: Areas of risk and vulnerability among foster children are described, including emotional and behavioral deficits, impaired neurobiological development, and social relationship deficits. Evidence suggesting the

Comparative study of the experience of caregiving in bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenia are disabling illnesses and place a considerable degree of burden on the caregivers. Many studies from India have measured the burden of care in schizophrenia and some studies have measured the burden experienced by the caregivers of bipolar affective disorder. Few studies have compared this variable in these disorders. Experience of caregiving is a broader concept that takes into consideration both the negative and positive appraisal of the caregiving. However, no study from India has compared the experience of caregiving in bipolar aff

Dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in STX1A knockout mice.

HPC-1/syntaxin1A (STX1A) is considered to regulate exocytosis in neurones and endocrine cells. Previously, we reported that STX1A null mutant (STX1A KO) mice unexpectedly showed normal glutamatergic and GABAergic fast synaptic transmission but exhibited disturbances in monoaminergic transmission, such as serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), which may induce attenuation of latent inhibition. These results suggest that STX1A may contribute to dense-core vesicle exocytosis in vivo. Thus, we hypothesised that the lack of STX1A might affect the secretion of several hormones, as also mediated by d

Family resilience and the fortunes of war.

Military families have been a subject of concern due to increasing divorce rates and child maltreatment that have been directly linked to the number and length of combat deployments. In contrast many military families show positive resilience in the wake of multiple deployments. This article looks at several special situations where military families are faced with serious challenges after deployment: soldiers returning with post-traumatic stress disorder, soldiers receiving serious injuries, and those killed in action. McCubbin's Family Resilience Model is applied as a theoretical tool for un

Factors that influence emotional disturbance in adults living in extreme poverty.

Living in poverty conditions implies exposure to severe circumstances of social disadvantage, associated with greater propensity to contract illnesses. A negative correlation has consistently been observed between health and poverty. The chronic exposure to stress affects people's well-being through the development of symptoms of anxiety and depression. The suffering of these symptoms for a long time period may be considered as part of a more general syndrome of emotional disturbance, in detriment to a person's mental health. The objective of this study is to identify psychological factors tha

Toddlers' temperament profiles: stability and relations to negative and positive parenting.

This study investigated the type and stability of temperament profiles in toddlers, and relations of profile probability to negative and positive parenting trajectories. Mothers (N = 96) rated their child's (41 girls and 54 boys) Sociability, Anger Proneness, and Activity Level four times during 1 year. The assessment of parenting included both maternal self-reports and observational measures. Latent profile analysis indicated three child temperament profiles: a well-adjusted 'typical' profile, an 'expressive' profile with heightened externalizing problems, and a 'fearful' profile with heighte

Teaching adolescents about changing bodies: Randomized controlled trial of an Internet puberty education and body dissatisfaction prevention program.

This study tested the efficacy of an Internet-based prevention program, Trouble on the Tightrope: In Search of Skateboard Sam, on pubertal knowledge, body esteem, and self-esteem. One hundred and ninety participants (mean age 11.6 years) were randomized to either an intervention or attention placebo control condition and were assessed at baseline, after three Internet-based sessions, and at 3-month follow-up. Although the primary hypotheses were not supported, exploratory moderator analyses indicated that the intervention was beneficial for select students. Specifically, pubertal status modera
