Association between psychosocial distress, sexual disorders, self-esteem and quality of life with male androgenetic alopecia: a population-based study with men at age 46.

OBJECTIVES: To study the association between androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and its severity with psychosocial well-being in male subjects aged 46 years at the population level. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: The Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (NFBC1966). PARTICIPANTS: Data were available for 892 male subjects aged 46 years. INTERVENTIONS: Study subjects underwent comprehensive health examinations including a skin evaluation by dermatologists and determination of AGA according to the Norwood classification. They also filled in a questionnaire battery that included previously vali…

Development of a scoring system to predict outcomes of i.v. corticosteroid pulse therapy in rapidly progressive alopecia areata adopting digital image analysis of hair recovery.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune disease manifesting varying degrees of hair loss. Rapidly progressive AA (RP-AA) is a severe subtype of AA and often resistant to skin-directed treatments. i.v. corticosteroid pulse therapy has been applied for RP-AA; however, the treatment outcome can only become evaluable several months after the intervention, discomposing the patients. In this study, we attempted to develop a scoring system to predict treatment outcomes based on statistical correlations between newly identified predictors and the recovery rates calculated by digital image analysis…

Mandibulofacial dysostosis, severe lower eyelid coloboma, cleft palate, and alopecia: A new distinct form of mandibulofacial dysostosis or a severe form of Johnson-McMillin syndrome?

We describe a patient with a phenotype characterized by mandibulofacial dysostosis with severe lower eyelid coloboma, cleft palate, abnormal ears, alopecia, delayed eruption and crowded teeth, and sensorioneural hearing loss. The karyotype and the screening for mutations in the coding region of TCOF1 gene were normal. The clinical signs of our case overlap the new mandibulofacial dysostosis described by Stevenson et al. [2007] and the case with Johnson-McMillin syndrome described by Cushman et al. [2005]. The similar clinical signs, mainly, the severe facial involvement observed in these cases…

Topical immunomodulator therapy with squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE) is effective treatment for severe alopecia areata (AA): results of an open-label, paired-comparison, clinical trial.

UNLABELLED: Severe alopecia areata (AA) may have a chronic relapsing course and is often resistant to current treatments. OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to evaluate whether topical immunotherapy with squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE) is able to improve the course of severe AA and to reduce the severity of relapses. METHODS: Fifty-four patients affected by severe AA treated with SADBE who were followed for a period of at least 2 years were selected as the study group. Data collected were compared with those of a matched control group of 54 patients who did not receive any treatment. Stu…

Safety of Baricitinib in Adults with Severe Alopecia Areata from Two Phase III Trials Over a Median of 2.3 Years and Up to 4 Years of Treatment.

BACKGROUND: We report pooled safety data for baricitinib treatment of severe alopecia areata in patients in BRAVE-AA1 (phase II/III) and BRAVE-AA2 (phase III), including data from the long-term extension and bridging extension periods. METHODS: Data are reported from the extended dataset (patients receiving continuous baricitinib 2 mg or 4 mg) and the all-baricitinib dataset (all patients receiving any dose of baricitinib at any time during the trials). Safety outcomes include treatment-emergent adverse events, adverse events of special interest, and abnormal changes in laboratory test result…

Beyond health-related quality of life: initial psychometric validation of a new scale for addressing the gap in assessing the full range of alopecia areata psychosocial burden.

BACKGROUND: Patients with alopecia areata (AA) report a broad range of psychosocial outcomes beyond those assessed in existing health-related quality of life measures. Yet, to date, no psychometrically validated scale based on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) appears to exist to comprehensively measure these AA-specific psychosocial outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop such a scale, the Scale of Alopecia Areata Distress (SAAD), and to provide its initial validation evidence. METHODS: Using existing qualitative research on PROs for patients with AA, a pool of 144 i…

Evaluation of Susceptibility Genes/Loci Associated with Male Androgenetic Alopecia (MAGA) for Female-Pattern Hair Loss in a Chinese Han Population and a Brief Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a common disorder affecting women, and FPHL can cause psychological dysfunction and affect the social activities of patients. The disease-causing mechanisms are believed to be similar to those of male androgenetic alopecia (MAGA). Although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have confirmed susceptibility genes/loci for MAGA, the associations between these genetic loci and FPHL are largely unknown. We investigated the associations between susceptibility loci for MAGA and FPHL in a Chinese Han population; a literature review of susceptibility loci…

Evaluation of HLA class I and HLA class II allele profile and its relationship with clinical features in patients with alopecia areata: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease where autoimmune dysregulations along with genetic susceptibility are hypothesized to play a role in pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study in to evaluate HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, HLA-DQB1, and HLA-DRB1 profile and its relationship with clinical features in AA patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-eight patients with AA and 100 healthy controls were included in the study. HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, HLA-DQB1, and HLA-DRB1 frequencies were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP). RESULTS: HLA-B*39 a…

Joint study of the associations of HLA-B and the transmembrane short tandem repeat polymorphism of MICA protein with alopecia areata shows independent associations of both with the disease.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a skin disease that produces hair loss in patches of skin. The underlying mechanism of AA is a loss of immune privilege of hair follicles, which are then attacked by natural killer (NK) cells. A previous genome-wide association study linked single nucleotide polymorphisms of the protein MHC class I chain-related A (MICA) to this disease. MICA is the ligand for the activating receptor NKG2D, expressed mainly by NK cells and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells. As the aforementioned study did not include short tandem repeats (STRs) of MICA, we decided to study these in rel…
