To assess the effect of religious dietary practices and social customs on the vitamin D status of Asian immigrants, we kept records of the dietary intake and time spent out of doors of 81 Ugandan Asian men, women, and girls (9-19 years old). Sera were analysed for 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OHD3), and 28% of the subjects were found to have levels below the lower limit of normal. The (vegetarian) Hindus had the lowest dietary intakes, least time out of doors, and lowest serum 25-OHD3. CASE: A 25-year-old man presented with cauda equina syndrome after a fall from height. Imaging revealed an isolated transverse sacral fracture with contiguous S1 to S4 fracture lines, creating a distinctive "stepladder" morphology without significant canal compromise. The fracture was managed conservatively. Neurological status improved from ASIA Grade C to D, with recovery of perianal sensation and bladder function. Lupus cystitis is a rare complication associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This rare disorder has been reported mainly from East Asia, especially from Japan. In this study, we describe a patient with lupus cystitis and review 37 reported cases in Japan. Bowel symptoms preceded urinary symptoms in 13 of 37 (35%) patients, whereas five patients complained of only bowel symptoms. Hydronephrosis was detected in 34 of 37 patients (92%). Chikungunya (CHIK) virus is prevalent throughout Southeast Asia and Africa. It has caused numerous large outbreaks in India. No active or passive surveillance has been carried out since the last epidemic occurring in 1971. Actinic prurigo is a separate entity from the polymorphous light eruption that affects American Indians. It has been reported mainly from North and South America, with only few reported cases from Britain or Asia. We report a case of actinic prurigo in a Thai girl who showed cheilitis and pruritic papules on exposed areas for three years. We were able to induce populovesicular lesions by three consecutive irradiations with 100 J/cm2 UVA and 2 minimal erythematous dose of UVB. However, three weeks after irradiation, a prurigo papule developed at the UVB irradiated site.

Two hundred and forty nucleotides from the pre-M gene region of 10 Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus strains isolated in Malaysia in 1992 were sequenced and compared with the other JE virus strains from different geographic areas in Asia. Our JE virus strains belong to the largest genotypic group that includes strains isolated in temperate regions such as Japan, China, and Taiwan. Our Malaysian JE virus strains differed in 32 nucleotides (13.3%) from WTP/70/22 strain isolated from Malaysia in 1970, which belonged to another distinct genotypic group.

We report 3 cases of acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection imported from Asia. All 3 patients had fever and upper abdominal discomfort preceding jaundice which lasted 2-3 weeks with maximum bilirubin levels of 141-254 mmol/l. The ALT values peaked between 1,347 and 3,690 U/l. Both values normalized within 1-2 months. During the acute phase of the disease, all patients had high levels of IgG and IgM antibodies against HEV (anti-HEV) recombinant and synthetic peptides. The duration of the anti-HEV IgM was about 1-2 months.
