Problematic internet use in gamblers: impact on clinical and cognitive measures.

OBJECTIVE: Gambling is a commonplace phenomenon, existing along a continuum from occasional gambling to functionally impairing gambling disorder. The internet may act as a conduit for some gambling behaviors. The impact of problematic internet use on clinical and cognitive features relevant to gambling has received little research attention. METHODS: A total of 206 adults aged 18-30 years who gamble at least five times per year were recruited from the general community and undertook detailed clinical and cognitive assessments. Problematic internet use was defined using a total score of 5 or m

Effects of impulsivity and emotions on time perception: Laboratory behavioral measures.

Impulsivity is consistently linked to various problematic behaviors, including aggression, substance abuse, pathological gambling, risky driving, and numerous psychopathological disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and personality disorders. This study aims to investigate the relationship between self-reported impulsivity, measured by the Behavioral Inhibition/Behavioral Activation Scales, and emotional states (pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral), in the context of time estimation deviations. A time estimation task was administered to 129 adult participants (88 females) fro

Using nature and outdoor activity to improve children's health.

Childhood obesity affects 17% or 12.5 million of America's children, contributing to the rise in children's health disparities. Type 2 diabetes, asthma, vitamin D deficiency, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder have also increased over the past few decades. A shift toward a sedentary lifestyle is a major contributor to the decline in children's health. Children spend more time indoors using electronic media and less time engaged in outdoor unstructured play. This article reviews the current evidence of the mental and physical health benefits associated with unstructured, outdoor activ

Bidirectional Relationship Between Atopic Dermatitis and Psychiatric Comorbidities in Individuals of European Ancestry: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that significantly impacts quality of life and is often associated with psychiatric comorbidities. How-ever, the causal relationship between atopic dermatitis and psychiatric disorders remains unclear. This study employed bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian randomization to investigate the potential causal relationships between atopic dermatitis and 8 psychiatric conditions: depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, suicidality, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and schizophreni

Study to determine relevant health outcome measures in opioid use disorder: Multicriteria decision analysis.

The aim of the current study was to establish the most relevant health outcomes to assess opioid substitution treatment programmes (OSP) in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) in Spain. A multicriteria decision analysis was applied in 3 phases: 1) concepts and criteria definitions; 2) criteria screening and weighting by means of a discrete choice experiment; 3) deliberative process. Criteria established in phase 1 were: substance use (opioids, alcohol, tobacco, stimulants and cannabis), other mental disorders (affective/anxiety disorder, psychosis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,

Differences in Psychiatric Problems and Criminality Between Individuals Treated With Central Stimulants Before and After Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The evidence for central stimulant (CS) treatment in ADHD is strong in some respects but not with respect to unselected clinical material and long-term effects over the life course cycle. The objective of this study was to explore differences in vocational, psychiatric, and social impairment, including crime and substance abuse, among adults with ADHD, treated or not, with CS drugs before age 18. METHOD: A clinical population of men ( N = 343) and women ( N = 129) seeking CS treatment as adults was assessed within a specific program for such treatment. Clinical information and data

Construct validity of the Iowa Gambling Task.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) was created to assess real-world decision making in a laboratory setting and has been applied to various clinical populations (i.e., substance abuse, schizophrenia, pathological gamblers) outside those with orbitofrontal cortex damage, for whom it was originally developed. The current review provides a critical examination of lesion, functional neuroimaging, developmental, and clinical studies in order to examine the construct validity of the IGT. The preponderance of evidence provides support for the use of the IGT to detect decision making deficits in clinical po

Is childhood oppositional defiant disorder a precursor to adolescent conduct disorder? Findings from a four-year follow-up study of children with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the overlap between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), addressing whether ODD is subsyndromal form of conduct disorder (CD) and, if so, whether it is a precursor or prodrome syndrome of CD. METHOD: Assessments from multiple domains were used to examine 140 children with ADHD and 120 normal controls at baseline and 4 years later. RESULTS: Of children who had ADHD at baseline, 65% had comorbid ODD and 22% had CD. Among those with ODD, 32% had comorbid CD. All but one child with CD also had ODD that preceded the onset

Genome-wide analysis of screen behaviors among adolescents identifies novel loci and overlap with educational attainment and mental disorders.

Technological devices play a central role in adolescents' life. Despite concerns about negative effects of excessive screen time, there is little knowledge of screen behaviors' genetic architecture. Using self-reports from adolescents in the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (n = 18,490), we performed genome-wide association analysis for four screen behaviors: time spent (1) watching television; (2) gaming; (3) sitting/lying down with a screen device; and (4) using social media. The resulting summary statistics were analysed using the conditional false discovery rate (condFDR) a

A virtual reality scenario for all seasons: the virtual classroom.

Treatment and rehabilitation of the cognitive, psychological, and motor sequelae of central nervous system dysfunction often relies on assessment instruments to inform diagnosis and to track changes in clinical status. Typically, these assessments employ paper-and-pencil psychometrics, hands-on analog/computer tests, and rating of behavior within the context of real-world functional environments. Virtual reality offers the option to produce and distribute identical "standard" simulation environments in which performance can be measured and rehabilitated. Within such digital scenarios, normativ

Protein Kinase A and Anxiety-Related Behaviors: A Mini-Review.

This review focuses on the anxiety related to cyclic AMP/protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway that regulates stress responses. PKA regulates an array of diverse signals that interact with various neurotransmitter systems associated with alertness, mood, and acute and social anxiety-like states. Recent mouse studies support the involvement of the PKA pathway in common neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by heightened activation of the amygdala. The amygdala is critical for adaptive responses leading to fear learning and aberrant fear memory and its heightened activation is widely thoug

Exploring Parental Incarceration, US Government Support Programs, and Child Health and Well-Being: A National Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: To describe relationships between parental incarceration and child health and flourishing-a measure of curiosity, resilience, and self-regulation-and to identify government programs that moderate this relationship. METHODS: Using the National Survey of Children's Health data from 2016 through 2019 for children 6-17 years old, we estimated associations with logistic regression between parental incarceration and overall health and flourishing, adjusting for child, caregiver, and household factors. We secondarily examined physical health (asthma, headaches), mental health (attention

The genetics of Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is a complex neurological disorder that usually becomes evident between 4 and 18 years of age. The disorder is characterized by chronic motor and phonic tics, often with a variety of behavioural comorbidities; in particular, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and impulse control disorder. The cause of Tourette syndrome is poorly understood. Although environmental factors are proposed to have a role, genetic factors are thought to be the primary contributors to the pathogenesis of this disorder. However, identification of the causative gen

A cross-validation of the provisional diagnostic instrument (PDI-4).

BACKGROUND: The Provisional Diagnostic Instrument (PDI-4) is a brief, adult self-report instrument for 4 common psychiatric diagnoses in primary care patients: major depressive episode (MDE), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and bipolar I disorder based on past or present mania. Our objective was to assess validity of the PDI-4 in a population independent of the study population originally used to develop the scale. METHODS: An online version of the 17-item PDI-4 was administered to 1,047 adults in the US; respondents also completed the PHQ-

The 5 choice continuous performance test (5C-CPT): A novel tool to assess cognitive control across species.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders including Tourette's syndrome (TS) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are characterized by significant impairment in attention and cognitive control. These cognitive deficits persist throughout development, contribute significantly to socio-occupational impairment, and are relatively impervious to available treatment. A critical challenge in pro-cognitive drug discovery is translatability of findings across species, underscoring the need for developing valid and reliable cross-species cognitive tasks. NEW METHOD: Here we describe a cro
