Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction in animal models of Parkinson's disease.

Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction is a common non-motor symptom associated with synucleinopathies such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Several recent clinical studies indicate that cardiovascular autonomic impairments including orthostatic hypotension and sympathetic denervation may precede the development of the cardinal motor symptoms in PD, making cardiovascular dysfunction an attractive target for the development of biomarkers for early detection and potential neuroprotective strategies for PD. However, the pathologic mechanisms underlying cardiovascular dysfunction as well as many of the

Autonomic-somatic communications in the human pelvis: computer-assisted anatomic dissection in male and female fetuses.

Sphincter continence and sexual function require co-ordinated activity of autonomic and somatic neural pathways, which communicate at several levels in the human pelvis. However, classical dissection approaches are only of limited value for the determination and examination of thin nerve fibres belonging to autonomic supralevator and somatic infralevator pathways. In this study, we aimed to identify the location and nature of communications between these two pathways by combining specific neuronal immunohistochemical staining and three-dimensional reconstruction imaging. We studied 14 normal h

Assessing autonomic dysfunction in early diabetic neuropathy: the Survey of Autonomic Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Autonomic symptoms may occur frequently in diabetic and other neuropathies. There is a need to develop a simple instrument to measure autonomic symptoms in subjects with neuropathy and to test the validity of the instrument. METHODS: The Survey of Autonomic Symptoms (SAS) consists of 11 items in women and 12 in men. Each item is rated by an impact score ranging from 1 (least severe) to 5 (most severe). The SAS was tested in observational studies and compared to a previously validated autonomic scale, the Autonomic Symptom Profile (ASP), and to a series of autonomic tests. RESULTS:

[Acute respiratory failure associated with cholinergic crisis: report of five cases and review of the literature].

Distigmine bromide is a cholinesterase inhibitor widely used for the treatment of hypotonic neurogenic bladder. However, this drug is also known to cause cholinergic crisis, a rare but serious adverse reaction. Cholinergic crisis is an excessive amount of acetylcholine due to the systemic inhibition of cholinesterase activity, characterized by parasympathetic symptoms such as sweating, salivation, miosis, bradycardia, diarrhea and circulatory and respiratory failure. The incidence of cholinergic crisis has been estimated at approximately 0.2%, and the majority of the patients are elderly with

Neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration in Chagas disease.

Autonomic dysfunction plays a significant role in the development of chronic Chagas disease (CD). Destruction of cardiac parasympathetic ganglia can underlie arrhythmia and heart failure, while lesions of enteric neurons in the intestinal plexuses are a direct cause of aperistalsis and megasyndromes. Neuropathology is generated by acute infection when the parasite, though not directly damaging to neuronal cells, elicits immune reactions that can become cytotoxic, inducing oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. Anti-neuronal autoimmunity may further contribute to neuropathology. Much less clea

Acute autonomic sensory and motor neuropathy associated with parvovirus B19 infection.

We report a 9-year-old girl with acute autonomic sensory and motor neuropathy (AASM) associated with human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection. The patient presented with fever, erythema of the entire body, and abdominal pain with vomiting. The titer of HPV-B19 IgM antibody was significantly elevated. Symptoms such as muscle weakness, severe hyperesthesia, dyshidrosis, and neurogenic bladder associated with autonomic disturbance developed over several days. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy gave no obvious improvement of her symptoms. Motor and sensory impairment improved slowly without medica

[IMPACT OF TUBERCULOSIS INFECTION ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL STATUS OF CHILDREN].

Eighty-nine children aged 10 to 14 years with various manifestations of tuberculosis infection were examined using the psychometric tests: Eysenck's personality questionnaire adapted for children, J. Taylor's manifest anxiety scale adapted by T. A. Nemchinova, and the correction test. The Kérdö vegetative index was calculated to determine sympathetic-parasympathetic influences on the regulatory mechanisms of autonomic functions. Tuberculosis infection was found to have no impact on personality directions, but introverts were more among first infected and ill children. The more pronounced manif

The role of autonomic arousal in feelings of familiarity.

Subjective feelings of familiarity associated with a stimulus tend to be strongest when specific information about the previous encounter with the stimulus is difficult to retrieve (e.g., the butcher-on-the-bus phenomenon; [Mandler, G. (1980). Recognizing: The judgment of previous occurrence. Psychological Review, 87, 252-271.]). When a stimulus has been encountered previously and the circumstances of the encounter cannot be recollected, additional cognitive resources may be directed toward recollection processes; this resource allocation is accompanied by autonomic arousal [Dawson, M. E., Fil

Exercise training favourably affects autonomic and blood pressure responses during mental and physical stressors in African-American men.

Aerobic exercise is a powerful mechanism by which cardiovascular and autonomic parameters may be improved. We sought to quantify the extent of benefit that could be achieved by a short-term monitored exercise regimen on several autonomic parameters during recognized mental and physical stressors in young normotensive African-American men matched for a family history of hypertension, a group at high risk for the development of hypertension. Autonomic modulations were derived using spectral decomposition of the electrocardiogram and beat-to-beat blood pressures (BPs). Arterial compliance was obt

A predictive model for fatigue and its etiologic associations in primary biliary cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Excessive day-time somnolence and autonomic dysfunction are biological processes prevalent in Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) that associate with fatigue. Here we explore how these biological associates inter-relate, and their cumulative impact upon typical clinical cohorts. METHODS: A predictive model for daytime hypersomnolence (Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)) and autonomic dysfunction (Orthostatic Grading Scale (OGS)) was developed in a derivation cohort (n=124) and subsequently validated in a second cohort (n=114). Subjects also completed the disease specific quality of

A report of cranial autonomic symptoms in migraineurs.

The presence of cranial autonomic symptoms in migraine is well known and thought to represent activation of the trigeminal parasympathetic reflex pathway similar to trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. However, studies regarding the prevalence of these symptoms are few. The characteristics of migraineurs with cranial autonomic symptoms and the association of cranial autonomic symptoms with laterality of headache have never been studied in a clinic population. Seventy-eight consecutive subjects with migraine were recruited from the Headache Clinic of the Department of Psychiatry after exclusion o

Depression and cardiovascular comorbidity.

Depression has long had a popular link to cardiovascular disease and death. However, only during the last 15 years has scientific evidence supporting this common wisdom been available. Beginning in the early 1990s, there began to accumulate community-based epidemiological evidence that medically healthy, depressed patients followed for long periods of time were at increased risk of both cardiovascular disease and cardiac death. In the mid-1990s, evidence appeared to indicate that depression following a heart attack increased the risk of death. It is now apparent that depression aggravates the

A network of (autonomic) clock outputs.

The circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) is composed of thousands of oscillator neurons, each dependent on the cell-autonomous action of a defined set of circadian clock genes. A major question is still how these individual oscillators are organized into a biological clock that produces a coherent output capable of timing all the different daily changes in behavior and physiology. We investigated which anatomical connections and neurotransmitters are used by the biological clock to control the daily release pattern of a number of hormones. The picture that emerged shows projecti

The possible adverse effects of intramuscular botulinum toxin injections and their management.

In the last two decades or so the intramuscular administration of botulinum toxin type A, and more recently type B, has become an established first line treatment of many neurological and other medical disorders. So far, the toxin has been used mainly by experienced researchers and clinicians with extensive knowledge of its mode of action and potential adverse effects. However, in the foreseeable future it is likely that this treatment will be provided by more medical practitioners and in different clinical settings, especially as the range of its clinical indications increases. Botulinum toxi

Finding the missing link between ictal bradyarrhythmia, ictal asystole, and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.

Basic science studies of the human brain have supported the cortical representation of cardiovascular responses, including heart rate variability. Clinical observations of ictal bradyarrhythmia may be mechanistically explained by the influence of the central autonomic network, although the localization and lateralization issues need to be considered in the light of patterns of seizure spread, hand dominance, and presence of lesions. Ictal bradyarrhythmia also offers a mechanistic explanation of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), though it may explain only some but not all cases of SU

Differences between heart rate and blood pressure variability in schizophrenia.

Heart rate and blood pressure variability parameters were assessed to determine the risk of cardiac mortality in schizophrenia. We investigated 21 acute, unmedicated patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 21 matched controls. Cardiovascular parameters obtained included heart rate variability, blood pressure variability, cardiac output and left ventricular work index. All parameters investigated were analyzed using linear and non-linear techniques. These investigations revealed increased left ventricular work index and reduced heart rate variability. Furthermore, blood pressure was significan

Familial dysautonomia.

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder within the larger classification of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies, each caused by a different genetic error. The FD gene has been identified as IKBKAP. Mutations result in tissue-specific expression of mutant IkappaB kinase-associated protein (IKAP). The genetic error probably affects development, as well as maintenance, of neurons because there is neuropathological and clinical progression. Pathological alterations consist of decreased unmyelinated and small-fiber neurons. Clinical features reflect widespread
