The biocompatibility and osteogenic activity of allogenic decalcified bone matrix (DBM) used as a carrier for bone tissue engineering were studied. Following the method described by Urist, allogenic DBM was made. In vitro, DBM and bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) from rabbits were co-cultured for 3-7 days and subjected to HE staining, and a series of histomorphological observations were performed under phase-contrast microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). OBJECTIVES: The recent use of antiretroviral drugs in people with HIV infection produced a drastic reduction in mortality and a remarkable improvement in the quality of life for these patients. Interactions of transplantable cells with synthetic polymers can influence the function of biohybrid artificial organs. This study explored growth and secretion of human insulin by betaG I/17 cells cultured on surfaces bearing diamine groups (N2), trifluoropropyl groups (F3) and mixtures of the two. Cells cultured on high-F3 and high-N2 surfaces spread well, grew rapidly and produced >1.8 mol lactate per mol glucose consumed, closely resembling cells grown on the permissive control, glass. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) Type IV results in inadequate production of type III collagen and can lead to devastating vascular, gastrointestinal, and uterine complications. A case is presented of spontaneous colonic perforation in a patient with EDS Type IV complicated by multiple intestinal fistulas managed with porcine small intestinal submucosa. Early success with this technique would suggest additional applications in a variety of complicated gastrointestinal problems.

UNLABELLED: Esthetic correction of gingival recession is an important goal of periodontal therapy. This article describes a surgical technique that combines a modified tunnel technique and an acellular dermal connective tissue allograft. With the aid of vertical incisions, a tunnel is created under the buccal mucosa of the affected tooth. Whether induced by infection, inflammation, ischemia, and/or surgical injury, peritoneal adhesions are the leading cause of pelvic pain, bowel obstruction and infertility. Composite graft replacement of the aortic root has become a routine procedure for annuloaortic ectasia (AAE) and aortic valve insufficiency (AR) with aortic dissection and the results have improved. A Plastipore (porous polyethylene) Total Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis gave an excellent initial hearing result which was maintained for 14 years. Hearing then began to deteriorate and revision surgery showed disintegration of the prosthesis and a defect in the stapes footplate. Histological examination confirmed previous findings in porous polyethylene with multinucleated foreign body giant cells and breakdown of the material.

Previous experience with steroid-eluting small electrode designs have described their increased pacing efficiency, yet some reports have questioned their electrical stability. We report our experience with a new pacing lead design incorporating small surface (i.e. 1.2 mm2), high impedance pacing electrodes. This study assesses the use of Marlex mesh in conjunction with anterior colporrhaphy for the correction of cystocele with or without urinary stress incontinence. A retrospective review was carried out of 12 years' experience with 142 patients undergoing a modified anterior colporrhaphy reinforced with Marlex mesh. All patients had preoperative urodynamics.
