Between the lines: a discursive analysis of the non-specific low back pain literature.

BACKGROUND: The term nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP) is often ambiguously defined and inconsistently used in scientific literature. Yet, there is limited discussion and reflection on the meaning of the term and how different meanings influence research and clinical practice. AIM: The aim of this study was to critically analyze the meaning of NSLBP in scientific literature and its consequent influence on research and clinical practice. METHODOLOGY AND METHODS: Conducting a Foucauldian discourse analysis, we analyzed 24 articles that explicitly discussed the term's meaning. Relevant articles

Stakeholder Perspectives on a Community-Based Peer-Led Biomedical HIV Prevention Intervention for Women Who Engage in Sex Work in Southwestern Uganda: Results from a Qualitative Study.

HIV prevalence among Ugandan women who engage in sex work (WESW) is 31%, yet uptake of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is suboptimal due to multiple factors, including stigma and barriers to accessing healthcare. "Peer mentors" (peer leaders within WESW networks) could facilitate community-based delivery of biomedical HIV prevention products for WESW. We conducted formative research with key stakeholders to refine a potential community-based, peer mentor-led PrEP/PEP intervention. From July-August 2023, we conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) and ke

Pharmacological mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine against acute lung injury: From active ingredients to herbal formulae.

BACKGROUND: Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are the leading causes of acute respiratory failure in many critical diseases and are among the main respiratory diseases with high clinical mortality. The global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause severe ARDS, resulting in a steep rise in the number of patient deaths. Therefore, it is important to explore the pathogenesis of ALI and find effective therapeutic agents. In recent years, thanks to modern biomedical tools, some progress has been made in the application of traditional Chinese m

Flexible Electronics for Monitoring in vivo Electrophysiology and Metabolite Signals.

Numerous efforts have been made to develop efficient biosensors for detecting analytes in the human body. However, biosensors are often developed on rigid materials, which limits their application on skin, organs, and other tissues in the human body where good flexibility is required. Developing flexible materials for biosensors that can be used on soft and irregularly shaped surfaces would significantly expand the clinical application of biosensors. In this review, we will provide a selective overview of recently developed flexible electronic devices and their applications for monitoring in v

Little fish, big catch: zebrafish as a model for kidney disease.

The zebrafish, Danio rerio, is a relevant vertebrate model for biomedical research and translational studies because of its broad genetic conservation with humans. In recent years, scientists have formulated a growing list of zebrafish kidney disease paradigms, the study of which has contributed a multitude of insights into the basic biology of human conditions and even identified potential therapeutic agents. Conversely, there are also distinctive aspects of zebrafish biology lacking in higher vertebrates, such as the capacity to heal without lasting scar formation after tissue damage and the

HIV-1 gag: an emerging target for antiretroviral therapy.

The advances made in the treatment of HIV-1 infection represent a major success of modern biomedical research, prolonging healthy life and reducing virus transmission. There remain, however, many challenges relating primarily to side effects of long-term therapy and the ever-present danger of the emergence of drug-resistant strains. To counter these threats, there is a continuing need for new and better drugs, ideally targeting multiple independent steps in the HIV-1 replication cycle. The most successful current drugs target the viral enzymes: protease (PR), reverse transcriptase (RT), and in

Perceptions of Risks and Benefits of Participating in HIV Cure-Related Research Among Diverse Young Adults Living with HIV in the United States: Qualitative Research Findings.

In the United States, young adults have the highest rates of new HIV infections, and are less likely to be aware of their infection, be engaged in care, or achieve HIV viral suppression. As biomedical HIV research increasingly focuses on achieving long-term suppression without antiretroviral therapy (ART) and finding an HIV cure, little is known about perceptions of young adults living with HIV (YLWH) regarding HIV cure research. We recruited a diverse sample of 20 YLWH (18-29 years old) to participate in individual semistructured qualitative interviews to explore knowledge and perceptions of

The Application of Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV): Vaccine Vectors and Tumor Therapy.

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is an avian pathogen with an unsegmented negative-strand RNA genome that belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family. While primarily pathogenic in birds, NDV presents no threat to human health, rendering it a safe candidate for various biomedical applications. Extensive research has highlighted the potential of NDV as a vector for vaccine development and gene therapy, owing to its transcriptional modularity, low recombination rate, and lack of a DNA phase during replication. Furthermore, NDV exhibits oncolytic capabilities, efficiently eliciting antitumor immune respon

Targeted protein degradation via cellular trafficking of nanoparticles.

Strategies that selectively bind proteins of interest and target them to the intracellular protein recycling machinery for targeted protein degradation have recently emerged as powerful tools for undruggable targets in biomedical research and the pharmaceutical industry. However, targeting any new protein of interest with current degradation tools requires a laborious case-by-case design for different diseases and cell types, especially for extracellular targets. Here we observe that nanoparticles can mediate specific receptor-independent internalization of a bound protein and further develop

Proteomic Profiling of the Extracellular Vesicle Chaperone in Cancer.

Molecular chaperones are widely distributed intracellular proteins that play essential roles in maintaining proteome function by assisting in the folding of client proteins. Molecular chaperones, such as heat shock proteins (HSPs), are found intracellularly and extracellularly. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes, contain HSPs and horizontally transfer the functional chaperones into various recipient cells. Besides, mass spectrometry has enabled a comprehensive analysis of exosomal and EV proteins, which is useful in basic biomedical research to clinical biomarker search. We have pe

Silk-Enabled Conformal Multifunctional Bioelectronics for Investigation of Spatiotemporal Epileptiform Activities and Multimodal Neural Encoding/Decoding.

Flexible electronics can serve as powerful tools for biomedical diagnosis and therapies of neurological disorders, particularly for application cases with brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). Existing conformal soft bioelectrodes are applicable for basic electrocorticogram (ECoG) collecting/monitoring. Nevertheless, as an emerging and promising approach, further multidisciplinary efforts are still demanded for in-depth exploitations with these conformal soft electronics toward their practical neurophysiological applications in both scientific research and real-world clinical operation. Here, clini

Using Genome Sequence to Enable the Design of Medicines and Chemical Probes.

Rapid progress in genome sequencing technology has put us firmly into a postgenomic era. A key challenge in biomedical research is harnessing genome sequence to fulfill the promise of personalized medicine. This Review describes how genome sequencing has enabled the identification of disease-causing biomolecules and how these data have been converted into chemical probes of function, preclinical lead modalities, and ultimately U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs. In particular, we focus on the use of oligonucleotide-based modalities to target disease-causing RNAs; small mole

Multipurpose prevention technologies: the future of HIV and STI protection.

Every day, more than 1 million people are newly infected with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that can lead to morbidity, mortality, and an increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition. Existing prevention and management strategies, including behavior change, condom promotion, and therapy have not reduced the global incidence and prevalence, pointing to the need for novel innovative strategies. This review summarizes important issues raised during a satellite session at the first HIV Research for Prevention (R4P) conference, held in Cape Town, on October 31, 2014. We

AIDS, sex and condoms: African healers and the reinvention of tradition in Zaire.

Condoms offer considerable protection against sexual transmission of AIDS. Yet many Africans who are at risk of infection reject condoms as "unnatural." Data from Zaire have been used to examine this culturally constructed category in relation to sexuality, procreation, gender roles, class formation and international health and development policy. Much more than a simple transfer of biomedical technology is involved. Condom use with regular partners raises issues of cultural politics at many levels. "Traditional" African healers represent important social networks with considerable authority i

Challenges in Academic Authorship and Citation Metrics: Navigating Inflation, Biases, and the Rise of Evidence Synthesis.

This paper examines the challenges in academic publishing related to authorship inflation, citation bias, and the overreliance on quantitative metrics to evaluate research impact. Authorship inflation, including "gift authorship," occurs when individuals with minimal contributions are listed as co-authors, often due to institutional or political norms, inflating academic profiles without reflecting actual input. The study also discusses how citation patterns differ across disciplines, with high-citation fields like biomedical sciences benefiting from larger, faster publications, while research

Operating and Biocontainment Procedures of a Facility for Laboratory Mice with a Natural Microbiome: Immunophenotyping Procedure.

The use of laboratory mice with a natural microbiome, such as "Wildling mice", offers a promising research tool for both basic and applied science due to their close resemblance to the human superorganism. However, the breeding and maintenance of these mice, which harbor a diverse microbiome including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, pose significant challenges for animal husbandry facilities at research institutions. To address these challenges, a specialized facility concept was developed for housing "Wildling mice" at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. This approach involved designing a
