Oral Semaglutide in Routine Clinical Practice: 24-Month Real-World Effectiveness, Persistence and Safety in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes.

AIMS: Real-world long-term data on oral semaglutide are limited. We evaluated its 24-month effectiveness, persistence, and safety in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective real-world study included 232 adults with T2D initiating oral semaglutide at an Italian diabetes clinic. Changes in HbA1c, body weight, eGFR, urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) and lipid profile were assessed using linear mixed models. The composite endpoint of HbA1c ≤ 7% and ≥ 5% weight loss was assessed over follow-up. Treatment persistence was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier analys

Moderate differences in body condition do not influence fasted glucose metabolism or ovulation induction in mares.

BACKGROUND: Ovulation induction is widely used in equine breeding management. However, some mares do not respond to ovulation induction for reasons that remain unclear. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: The objective was to evaluate whether body condition influenced fasted glucose or insulin concentrations and ovulation rates following ovulation induction. We hypothesized that moderate mares would exhibit increased fasted insulin concentrations and greater incidence of anovulation following ovulation induction. METHODS: Light breed mares (n = 13) were grouped according to body condition score (BCS) and crest

Relationship between infertility and body mass-related indices in women of childbearing age: a cross-sectional study of the NHANES 2013-2016.

BACKGROUND: To further assess the relationship between obesity and infertility, we employed a novel anthropometric index, specifically designed to assess the relationship between a body shape index (ABSI) and infertility in women of childbearing age. Furthermore, we examined the correlation between ABSI and visceral obesity index (VAI) in relation to infertility. METHODS: A total of 1989 female participants of childbearing age were included, based on National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2013 to 2016. The ABSI is calculated by dividing waist circumference by body

Investigating the Effects of a Novel Salmon-Derived Protein Peptide on Markers of Recovery From Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage.

Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) impairs muscle function and subsequent performance. While research investigating the protective role of animal-derived protein is widespread, investigations into sustainable alternatives are lacking. The present study examined the effects of a novel, salmon-derived protein peptide (SPP) on muscle recovery. In a single-blind, parallel-design, 33 recreationally active adults (age: 23.9 ± 4.0 years, body mass index: 23.7 ± 4.0) were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (a) SPP, (b) whey protein, or (c) carbohydrate control. In addition to a controlled 1.

Dorsal skin biopsies: A non-lethal sampling method for studying amphibians, including the highly endangered Harlequin frogs (Bufonidae: Atelopus).

Non-lethal sampling methods are increasingly essential for amphibian research as global declines intensify and many species persist in small, vulnerable populations. Skin biopsies offer a promising alternative to whole-animal collection and other minimally invasive approaches; however, systematic evaluations of recovery and impacts on body condition remain limited. Here, we assess the effects of small (2-mm) dorsal skin biopsies in four frog species, including three highly endangered Harlequin frogs (Atelopus bomolochos, A. balios, A. longirostris) and the Gualataco marsupial frog (Gastrotheca

Educational Attainment as the Primary Socioeconomic Determinant of Heart Failure: A Multivariable Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status (SES), intelligence, and cognitive function have been associated with heart failure (HF) risk in observational studies, but their causal relationships remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether SES components, intelligence, and cognitive function have independent causal effects on HF risk and to identify modifiable mediators underlying these associations. METHODS: We conducted 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses using summary statistics from large genome-wide association studies in populations of European ancestr

Association between relative fat mass and sleep disorder among US adults: Results from NHANES 2007 to 2014.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders affect a large share of adults, and excess body fat is a recognized risk factor. Relative fat mass (RFM) is a recently developed anthropometric index intended to estimate body fat percentage more closely than body mass index (BMI). This study examined the association between RFM and physician-diagnosed sleep disorders in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. METHODS: We analyzed data on 21,115 participants (≥20 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007 to 2014. RFM was calculated from measured waist circumference and height

Performance and safety of Femorally Inserted Central Catheters in oncological patients: A cases series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Selection of vascular access devices (VADs) is critical for successful intravenous therapy, especially in oncology patients requiring long-term central VADs. In cases where upper-body venous access is not viable, femoral access has traditionally been avoided due to higher infection and thrombosis risks. However, new protocols and technologies have redefined the safety and feasibility of femorally inserted central catheters (FICCs). OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the outcomes of FICC insertions in oncology patients at a tertiary hospital in Spain, using advanced techniques includi

Measuring energy requirements during pulmonary exacerbations of cystic fibrosis using indirect calorimetry.

OBJECTIVE: The energy demands of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) vary depending on pancreatic function, body composition, lung function, and clinical status. In clinical practice, predictive equations are used to determine energy requirements yet do not reliably account for these factors. Research regarding energy requirements during CF pulmonary exacerbation (CFPEx) and clinical stability is conflicting. The aim of this study was to investigate potential within-individual changes in measured resting energy expenditure (mREE) using indirect calorimetry (IC) at the commencement and comple

Effects of switching from agalsidase-α to agalsidase-β on biomarkers, renal and cardiac parameters, and disease severity in fabry disease forming neutralizing antidrug antibodies: a case report.

Fabry disease is an X-linked hereditary disorder caused by deficient α-galactosidase A (GLA) activity. Patients with Fabry disease are often treated with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). However, ERT often induces the formation of neutralizing antidrug antibodies (ADAs), which may impair the therapeutic efficacy. Here, we report the case of a 32-year-old man with Fabry disease and resultant neutralizing ADAs who was treated by switching from agalsidase-α to agalsidase-β. We monitored biomarkers, such as plasma globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3), urinary globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), urinary m
