Serum concentrations of thymosin alpha-1 (TA-1), an immunoregulatory peptide, were assayed in patients with chronic hepatitis B infection and volunteer blood donor controls. Coded samples were tested using a radioimmunoassay. The TA-1 concentrations in HBsAg-positive patients averaged 1555 pg/ml, whereas in the control group, the mean TA-1 in serum was 2159 pg/ml (P less than 0.001). A new capture enzyme immunoassay for the determination of immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) is described. Core antigen produced in Escherichia coli was labeled with biotin and subsequently detected by an avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex. The incidence of persistent hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigenaemia was studied in 114 nephrotic children with glomerulonephritis. Twenty five (24 boys) of 28 cases of membranous glomerulonephritis were HBs antigen (HBsAg) carriers. This communication presents evidence in support of a neuropathic basis for the myopathy associated with malignant hyperpyrexia (MH). Muscle from MH susceptible individuals showed a reduced calcium uptake by the sarcoplasmic reticulum. There was a reduced concentration of phosphocreatine and ATP and an increased concentration of glucose-6-phosphate in these muscle samples.
