Clinical performance of a conometric retention system for single implant restorations: 1-year analysis of a prospective multicenter study.

PURPOSE: Conventional screw- and cement-retained single implant restorations are associated with biological and technical complications. Friction-retained conometric concepts have been proposed as an alternative; however, clinical evidence for single crowns, particularly from prospective multicenter studies, remains limited. This study evaluated the 1-year clinical performance of a conometric retention system for implant-supported single crowns. METHODS: This prospective multicenter study was conducted at nine clinical centers in Europe and North America. Subjects requiring single-tooth repla

Two-Stage Reconstruction for Failed Subtrochanteric Femur Fixation with Peri-Implant Infection and Severe Proximal Femoral Bone Loss: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Subtrochanteric femur fractures are difficult to manage due to high mechanical stresses and complex deforming forces. Treatment often involves placing an intramedullary nail (IM nail) for stabilization and early mobilization. Despite being the preferred fixation method, IM nail constructs remain vulnerable to failure, and repeated fixation attempts can compromise remaining bone stock. When fixation failure occurs in conjunction with early post-operative infection, the combined instability and bone loss may necessitate staged reconstruction. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old female sust

5G Remote Robotic-Assisted Percutaneous Kyphoplasty Is Safe and Effective for Thoracolumbar Vertebral Compression Fractures.

OBJECTIVE: 5G remote robotic-assisted (RRA) technology has been applied in percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) for the treatment of patients with thoracolumbar vertebral compression fractures. Although some cases of RRA have already been reported, the safety and effectiveness of this technology remain controversial. Meanwhile, the radiographic and clinical parameters of the RRA and conventional robotic-assisted (CRA) methods have not been compared for patients with thoracolumbar vertebral compression fractures. METHODS: This study aimed to compare the radiographic and clinical parameters of RRA ve

Clinical and functional outcomes of masquelet technique for treating Fracture-related Infections(FRIs) in shoulder girdle.

Structural and functional integrity pose a challenge for the treatment of fracture-related infections (FRI) in the shoulder girdle. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical and functional outcomes of patients treated with the Masquelet technique. From January 2012 to January 2023, sixty-two consecutive adult patients with FRI in the shoulder girdle (8 in clavicle and 54 in humerus) were treated using this technique. This involved the use of antibiotic bone cement to fill the dead space after debridement, followed by staged bone grafting. Patients' outcomes, in terms of infection re

Survival of primary total knee arthroplasty in a modern anatomic implant with and without a short stem extension.

INTRODUCTION: In primary conventional TKA, the tibial fixation is achieved by the epiphyseal and metaphyseal zone. One of those two zones of fixation, can be compromised by the local bone quality (bone micro-architecture and resistance), previous surgery or decreased surface of contact, leading to micro-mobility of the implant and potentially leading to aseptic loosening (AL). It was our hypothesis that the addition of a short fully cemented stem would improve the metaphyseal and epiphyseal fixation of the implant. To verify this hypothesis, the goals of this retrospective study were therefore

Risk Factors for Tibial Component Loosening: A Meta-Analysis of Long-Term Follow-up Radiostereometric Analysis Data.

BACKGROUND: Radiostereometric analysis (RSA) is a highly accurate tool to detect implant migration and predict loosening following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, little is known about the predisposing risk factors for implant migration, nor which migration profile should be considered physiological (i.e., merely part of an implant-settling phase) and which should be considered pathological (i.e., having a high probability for implant loosening). By pooling individual participant data from long-term follow-up RSA studies, we aimed to identify predisposing risk factors for tibial compon

A Novel Tripod Percutaneous Reconstruction Technique in Periacetabular Lesions Caused by Metastatic Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic lesions in the periacetabular region can cause pain and immobility. Symptomatic patients are often treated surgically with a total hip replacement using various modified Harrington methods. These open surgical procedures confer inherent risks. Prolonged recovery and potential complications may delay adjuvant radiation and systemic therapy. METHODS: We describe a novel technique for acetabular reconstruction. Three large-bore cannulated screws are placed percutaneously under fluoroscopy in a tripod configuration to reinforce the mechanical axes of the acetabulum. Increas

Immunohistochemistry in diagnosis and surgical treatment of femoral bone metastasis.

BACKGROUND: When the primary tumor is unknown, the biopsy and the histopathological examination (associated with immunohistochemistry and molecular profiling) will identify the type and subtype of the tumor and, if possible, the site of origin. The classification in type and subtype will allow to assess the prognosis and to indicate the most appropriate therapeutic approach. AIM: Identification of the unknown primary tumor by biopsy and immunohistochemistry from the femoral bone metastasis, the clinical results and the survival rate after osteosynthesis ± cement stabilization of the lesion.

Risk factors for new vertebral compression fractures after percutaneous vertebroplasty: qualitative evidence synthesized from a systematic review.

STUDY DESIGN: Methodological systematic review. OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors for new vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) in patients after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and to grade the evidence according to the quality of included studies. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: PVP is an effective procedure for the treatment of VCFs. A major concern after PVP in patients with osteoporosis is the occurrence of new VCFs in the untreated vertebrae. The risk factors for new VCFs after PVP reported thus far remain controversial. These risk factors have neither been well identified or summ

A comparative 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging of experimental Staphylococcus aureus osteomyelitis and Staphylococcus epidermidis foreign-body-associated infection in the rabbit tibia.

BACKGROUND: 18F-FDG-PET imaging has emerged as a promising method in the diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis commonly due to Staphylococcus aureus. The inaccuracy of 18 F-FDG-PET in the detection of periprosthetic joint infections may be related to the predominance of low-virulent S. epidermidis strains as the causative pathogen. We have compared the18F-FDG-PET characteristics of S. aureus osteomyelitis and foreign-body-associated S. epidermidis infections under standardized laboratory conditions. METHODS: Twenty-two rabbits were randomized into three groups. In group 1, a localized osteomyeli
