Humans are accidental intermediate hosts and a dead-end for the echinococcosis parasite. No cases of hydatid echinococcosis (hydatid cyst) have ever been described in a French-born very elderly person, who has never been out of France. We report the case of a 90-year-old man hospitalised following a decline in his general health and the discovery of a liver mass on the CT-scan. The abdominal palpation was painless, and no mass was felt. Biological tests revealed hypereosinophilia, a mild inflammatory syndrome, a slight increase in the immunoglobulin E level, and positive serology for Echinococ…

Echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of cestode species that belong to the genus Echinococcus. The infection of hydatid in sheep is very common in China, especially in the northwestern China. Here, we conducted the first systematic review and meta-analysis of echinococcosis in sheep in China. Six databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Baidu Library, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP Chinese Journal Database) were used to retrieve the literatures on echinococcosis in sheep in China from 1983 to 2020, and 74 studies. The random effects model was used in the "meta" package of the R software an…

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a worldwide parasitic zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato affecting livestock, particularly sheep and goats. However, often this parasitosis is underestimated. For this reason, this study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological features and spatial distribution of CE in sheep and goats slaughtered in a hyperendemic Mediterranean area.
METHODS: A survey was conducted in the Basilicata region (southern Italy) from 2014 to 2019. A total of 1454 animals (1265 sheep and 189 goats) from 824 farms were examined for hydatid…

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE), is a parasitic zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) larvae in liver and lungs of both humans and animals. Surgical intervention is the mainstay for CE treatment, using scolicidal agents that inactivate live protoscolices. This study evaluated the scolicidal effects of Silybum marianum ethanolic extract and its combination with albendazole in vitro for the first time. Moreover, in a literature review, we investigated the effects of a wide range of Iranian medicinal plants on protoscolices of E. granulosus.
METHODS: S. marianum ethan…

Seven hundred sixty-five (765) adult wild boars were examined during the 2016/2017 hunting season for the research of parasites. Post mortem inspection was carried out at the slaughterhouse by the Official Veterinarian on the plucks (heart, tongue, lungs, diaphragm, and liver) of the killed animals presented by hunters. Of these, 0.8% (6/765) were positive for Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.), and 2.6% (20/765) were positive for the metacestode stage of Taenia hydatigena (Cysticercus tenuicollis), while 0.5% (4/765) animals showed a mixed infection (Echinococcus granulosus s.l. and Ta…

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cysts are parasitic zoonoses that often occur in the liver. Pancreatic hydatid cysts are very rare and are usually misdi … f cysts. History of living in an area in which the causative organism is endemic and positive anti-echinococcus IgG antibody status could help with the diagnosis. Radical resection combined with oral albendazole administration is the standard treatment for pancreatic hydatid cysts. Avoiding perioperative cystic rupture and abdominal echinococcosis impl …

To present an extraordinary and likely first case of secondary multiple intraabdominal hydatidosis, probably as a sequel to primary renal hydatid cyst surgery. A 34-year-old male who underwent a right nephrectomy four years ago for renal hydatidosis was admitted. His abdominopelvic computed tomography scan revealed the hypodense lesions adjacent to the anterior lobe of the liver, splenic hilus, right common iliac vein, and left paracolic area. He underwent the total surgical resection and the histopathologic evaluation revealed the hydatidosis (echinococcosis) and the medical therapy, Albendaz…

Hydatid disease is a common health problem in sheep-farming countries such as Iran. The liver and lungs are the most common primary sites of hydatid cysts in humans. Cardiac involvement is an uncommon manifestation, and the right ventricle outflow tract (RVOT) is rarely involved. This is a case report of a 34-year-old man who presented to the Heart Clinic, Tehran, Iran, in 2019 with a history of dyspnoea and fatigue. Following an imaging study, the patient was diagnosed with an RVOT hydatid cyst. He underwent surgical resection of the cyst. The post-operative course was uneventful.

Echinococcus granulosus is a zoonotic parasite causing hydatidosis in humans and animals. This study has been done in order to investigate the effect of albendazole nanocrystals on the viability of E. granulosus protoscolices. The average size and hydrodynamic diameter of albendazole nanocrystals were 976±218 and 1334±502 nm, respectively. Fertile hydatid cysts were isolated from the liver of slaughtered sheep. The isolated cysts were further identified using morphological and molecular techniques. The nucleotide sequence analysis indicated that the genotype of the protoscolices was E. granulo…

Hydatid cyst is an endemic disease especially in underdeveloped and developing countries, affecting mostly the liver and lungs. However, a wide range of unusual anatomical sites in the abdomen have been reported, including the spleen, pancreas, kidney, and ovaries as well as dissemination within the abdominal and pelvic cavities. The location of hydatid disease in the colon is very infrequent, and very few cases have been presented so far. The hydatid cysts located in other sites are mostly due to rupture or extrusion of primary liver or splenic cysts. In this article, we present a case of pri

Liver transplantation is the final treatment option for end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure, although availability of donor organs is a major limitation. The large gap between the growing list of patients awaiting liver transplantation and the scarcity of donor organs has fueled efforts to maximize the existing donor pool and identify new avenues. We treated a 13-year-old boy who had acute liver failure, due to Wilson's disease, with transplantation of a liver from a deceased liver donor with a calcified hydatid cyst. After 3 years of follow-up, liver function tests remained normal

Echinococcus spp. tapeworms can cause serious diseases in mammals, including humans. Within the E. granulosus species complex, metacestodes produce unilocular cysts that are responsible for cystic echinococcosis in animal intermediate hosts. Canids are definitive hosts, harbouring adult cestodes in their intestines. Adult E. canadensis were recovered from the small intestine of 1 of 262 coyotes (Canis latrans) from Nova Scotia, Canada. Subsequently, we found unilocular cysts in lungs and livers of 4 of 8 sympatric moose (Alces alces) from Cape Breton Island. DNA was extracted from three cysts …
