Exploring the impact of expressive therapies on military veterans with PTSD: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common in military veterans and presents as distress, anxiety, or depression due to a traumatic event. Expressive therapies are an emerging intervention used to enhance the quality of life by addressing the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects of individuals. METHODS: Five databases were searched from 2014 to 2022 with search terms addressing the expressive therapies of art, dance, drama, music, and writing, and military veterans with PTSD. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-seven articles were screened and 16 articles qualified for revie

The Clinical value of brain-gut behavioral therapies for functional esophageal disorders and symptoms.

Functional esophageal disorders (functional chest pain, functional heartburn, reflux hypersensitivity, globus, and functional dysphagia) are the disorders of gut-brain interactions (DGBI) and present with esophageal symptoms not associated with a structural, major motility or underlying inflammatory condition. Notably, many patients with the latter conditions may still experience esophageal symptoms beyond what could be attributed to their underlying disorders. Esophageal visceral hypersensitivity and hypervigilance are the two pathways which drive functional esophageal disorders and symptoms.

Non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: a clinician's guide to understanding the phenomenon, diagnostic challenges, and evidence-based treatments.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent and complex behavior, particularly among adolescents. This review explores the definition, ep … disorders, underscoring the need for tailored interventions. Psychotherapeutic approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT), have shown promise in reducing NSSI, though long-term efficacy and comparative outcomes require further investigation. Pharmacological treatments, while limited, shoul …

An open trial of 'grief-help': a cognitive-behavioural treatment for prolonged grief in children and adolescents.

In the past years, there is growing recognition of a syndrome of disturbed grief referred to as prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Although mostly studied in adults, clinically significant PGD symptoms have also been observed in children and adolescents. To date, no effective treatment for childhood PGD yet exists. We recently developed a nine-session cognitive-behavioural treatment for childhood PGD combined with five sessions of parental counselling. In the current article, we present outcomes of treatment of 10 consecutive children and adolescents turning to our university clinic with elevated

The management of pain in sickle cell disease.

The pain of vaso-occlusive crisis in patients with sickle cell disease is excruciating, incapacitating, and sometimes refractory to even the most advanced analgesic treatments. A comprehensive, multimodal approach to therapy that includes education, cognitive therapies, anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, and psychostimulant adjuvant drugs has been presented. Until a cure for the underlying disease is found, these are the best approaches available. The authors hope that future research will find even better modalities of analgesic care.

Treatment of comorbid sleep disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder in U.S. active duty military personnel: A pilot randomized clinical trial.

Insomnia and nightmares are common in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They are associated with worse psychological and physical health and worse PTSD treatment outcomes. In addition, they are resistant to PTSD treatments, which do not typically address sleep disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and nightmares (CBT-I&N) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for PTSD are first-line treatments, but limited evidence exists guiding the treatment of individuals with all three disorders. The current study randomized U.S. military personnel (N = 93) to one of three…

Treatment of comorbid sleep disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder in active duty military: Design and methodology of a randomized clinical trial.

Many individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) also suffer from insomnia and nightmares, which may be symptoms of PTSD or constitute partially independent comorbid disorders. Sleep disturbances are resistant to current treatments for PTSD, and those suffering from PTSD, insomnia, and nightmares have worse PTSD treatment outcomes. In addition, insomnia and nightmares are risk factors for depression, substance abuse, anxiety, and suicide. Pharmacology of cognitive enhancers for exposure-based therapy of fear, anxiety and trauma-related disorders.

Pathological fear and anxiety are highly debilitating and, despite considerable advances in psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy they remain insufficiently treated in many patients with PTSD, phobias, panic and other anxiety disorders. Increasing preclinical and clinical evidence indicates that pharmacological treatments including cognitive enhancers, when given as adjuncts to psychotherapeutic approaches [cognitive behavioral therapy including extinction-based exposure therapy] enhance treatment efficacy, while using anxiolytics such as benzodiazepines as adjuncts can undermine long-term treatme…

[Striatopallidodentate calcinosis, hypoparathyroidism and neurological features: a case series study].

INTRODUCTION: The respective roles of hypocalcemia and intracerebral calcifications in the occurrence of various neurological manifestations in hypoparathyroidism is not entirely clear. Nevertheless, therapeutic and prognostic implications are important. OBJECTIVES: We analyze the neurological clinical aspects observed in hypoparathyroidism and correlate them to the biological calcium abnormality and radiological CT scan findings. We also compare these results with data reported in the idiopathic form of striatopallidodentate calcinosis. PATIENTS: The neurological clinical, CT scan findings

Influence of treatment of Tourette syndrome with delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta9-THC) on neuropsychological performance.

Previous studies have suggested that marijuana (cannabis sativa) and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta9-THC), the major psychoactive ingredient of marijuana, are effective in the therapy of tics and associated behavioral disorders in Tourette Syndrome (TS). Because there is also evidence that cannabis sativa may cause cognitive impairment in healthy users, we performed a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial for delta9-THC in 12 adult TS patients to investigate whether treatment of TS with a single dose of delta9-THC at 5.0 to 10.0 mg causes significant side effects on n

Effectiveness of Manual Therapy and Acupuncture in Tension-Type Headache: A Systematic Review.

Tension-type headache is one of the most prevalent types of headache. The common presentation is a mild-to-moderate dull aching pain around the temporal region, like a tight band around the forehead, neck, shoulder, and sometimes behind eyes. It can occur at any age but most commonly in the adult female population. The exact underlying mechanism is not clear but muscle tension is one of the main causes, which can be due to stress and anxiety. There are several non-pharmacologic treatment options suggested for tension-type headaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation, biofeedback…

Preferences for different insomnia treatment options in people with schizophrenia and related psychoses: a qualitative study.

Symptoms of psychosis such as hallucinations and delusions can be intrusive and unwanted and often remain treatment-resistant. Due to recent progress in basic and clinical sciences, novel approaches such as sleep-based interventions are increasingly becoming offered to address the physical and mental health issues of people with severe mental illness. While the primary outcome is to improve sleep, studies have demonstrated that interventions that target symptoms of insomnia can also produce improvements in the severity of psychotic symptoms, quality of life, and functional outcomes. This study

Daytime lighting conditions alter home-cage behavior across both sexes in diurnal grass rats.

Circadian rhythms are crucial to biological functions, and cognitive functions such as attention, choice, and preference-related behaviors are modulated by circadian rhythms and disrupted in mood disorders such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). These neuropsychiatric diseases can be induced or worsened by alterations to daily light patterns and can also be treated with circadian-timed bright-light therapy, suggesting modulatory effects of light brightness on mood and behavior. While most laboratory rodents are nocturnal, the Nile grass rat (Arvicanthis n
