Psychopathy, criminogenic cognitions and emotional responses to affective stimuli among male adult offenders.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has consistently shown value in studying emotion processing with psychopathy, but the relative effect of aural and visual stimulation has hardly been considered. AIMS: Our aims were to (1) compare reaction time and self-rated valence ((un)pleasantness), arousal and sense of being dominated by affective sounds or visual images among offenders with and without psychopathy (=/>26) on the psychopathy check-list revised; (2) investigate any associations, controlling for social desirability and depression; (3) explore the possible mediating effect of criminogenic cogni

Right anterior insula ASL hypoperfusion as a diagnostic biomarker of prodromal and mild dementia with Lewy bodies: preliminary evidence using a Bayesian approach.

Identifying and validating a biomarker with high specificity in early-stage dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) using a feasible method is crucial to enhance the current suboptimal diagnostic procedure. Previous research revealed abnormalities, including hypoperfusion in the right anterior insular cortex at group level, in prodromal DLB. Exploring hypoperfusion of the right anterior insula, at an individual-level and assessing its relevance as a potential imaging biomarker in early DLB, has, to our knowledge, not been investigated. Our preliminary study aims to assess the feasibility of the techni

[Physical activity in patients with schizophrenia: From neurobiology to clinical benefits].

Schizophrenia is a severe chronic mental disorder that mainly manifests by positive symptoms, negative symptoms, disorganized behavior and thought and cognitive impairments. Taken together, these symptoms have substantial impact on quality of life, well-being and functional outcome. Patients with schizophrenia have dramatically higher levels of cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity than the general population due to poor physical fitness and to sedentary lifestyle. They have a reduced life expectancy, and an excess mortality being two or three times more than that in the general population. M

Early-life musical intervention programs neuroimmune activity and synaptic plasticity to enhance adult learning and memory.

Early-life sensory environments can shape lifelong brain function, yet the neuroimmune and neuroplastic mechanisms through which musical stimulation influences cognitive development remain poorly understood. Here, we examined how graded musical brain intervention (MBI) during embryonic and early postnatal periods affects adult cognition and its underlying immune and neural substrates. Pregnant C57BL/6J mice were exposed to a standardized music paradigm starting on embryonic day 13, with groups differing in how long exposure continued into the early postnatal period to test how the developmenta

Cognitive dispersion in the Alzheimer's disease spectrum.

OBJECTIVES: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) may represent the earliest observable stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet identifying individuals at risk of progressing remains challenging. Cognitive dispersion, or intra-individual variability (IIV-D), may serve as a sensitive early marker. This study examined IIV-D across diagnostic groups, focusing on SCD and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) progressors (SCD-p, aMCI-p; progressing to a more advanced disease stage) versus non-progressors (SCD-np, aMCI-np; not progressing to a more advanced stage). We expected greater IIV-D across g

An Augmented Reality and AI-Based System for Contextual Appliance Guidance: Implications for Cognitive Accessibility and Assistive Interaction.

BACKGROUND: Modern household appliances often present complex interfaces that can be difficult to use, especially for older adults, people with visual impairments, and users with mild cognitive difficulties. In such cases, interacting with appliances may require sustained attention, visuospatial search, working memory, and sequential action planning, while traditional user manuals often provide limited contextual support. METHODS: To address this issue, this study presents a proof-of-concept augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI)-based system for contextual appliance guidance

A cognitive dissonance-based mobile app intervention for smoking cessation: A single-arm pilot trial.

INTRODUCTION: Despite overall declines in the rate of tobacco use in the United States over the past 30 years, nearly 38 million Americans still smoke, posing extremely high risk for long-term health problems and death. Recent reviews note that there has been significant progress in the application of both clinical and public health interventions to help smokers quit; however, they have also concluded that the overall success rate has not significantly improved. There remains a need for novel, theory-driven approaches to enhance quit rates and innovative interventions that increase reach and e

Development and proof-of-concept of a treatment target recommendation algorithm in the context of cognitive processing therapy.

Background: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an effective, widely supported treatment for PTSD, but patient response varies considerably. Optimally targeting maladaptive trauma-related beliefs (stuck points) may significantly enhance treatment outcomes. This study evaluated the feasibility of developing a recommendation algorithm that helps clinicians identify specific patient-endorsed stuck points, which, when effectively restructured, could lead to greater reductions in PTSD symptoms. Methods: Data were drawn from 898 veterans and service members participating in a two-week CPT-based acc

The triad of collagen, vitamin C, and vitamin E in aging: emerging roles in mood and psychological health, neurotrophic support, cognitive function, endurance, and sarcopenia.

Aging is correlated with a progressive deterioration in muscle mass, strength, metabolic efficiency, vascular and hepatic functions, immune competence, and cognitive capabilities, predominantly influenced by augmented oxidative stress and compromised anabolic signaling pathways. Prophylactic nutritional interventions, particularly those involving collagen, vitamin C, and vitamin E, have emerged as promising, integrative modulators of these age-related declines, especially when combined with structured exercise regimens. Collagen supplementation delivers critical amino acids that facilitate mus

The effects of subjective socioeconomic status and its underestimation on physical activity: evidence from China.

BACKGROUND: Improving levels of physical activity (PA) benefits health and well-being and contribute to attainment of global non-communicable diseases targets and a number of the sustainable development goals. While objective socioeconomic status (OSS) is recognized as a significant factor influencing PA, research on subjective socioeconomic status (SSS) remains limited, particularly regarding the impact of the discrepancy between SSS and OSS (subjective status underestimation, SSU). Consequently, this study investigates the relationship between SSS, SSU and PA in China. METHODS: Using data f

Translational imaging evidence for rapid reversal of amyloid and myelin pathology following deep cervical lymphatic-venous anastomosis in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Recently, microsurgical restoration of extracranial lymphatic outflow through lymphatic-venous anastomosis (LVA) has been explored as a potential, albeit controversial, therapeutic strategy to enhance glymphatic clearance in Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, its impact on AD-related neuropathology has not yet been quantitatively or longitudinally evaluated. In this study, we performed translational PET imaging to determine whether restoring extracranial lymphatic outflow can rapidly and reversibly modulate cerebral glucose metabolism, myelin integrity, and amyloid burden in relati
