The management of the coronavirus pandemic required huge worldwide vaccination efforts. In this endeavour, healthcare workers faced the twofold challenge of reaching remote areas, and persuading people to take the vaccine. As it happens, this is nothing new in the history of medicine. Health workers may indeed continue to take inspiration from Francisco Xavier Balmis, a Spanish physician of the 19th century who realised the importance of Jenner's vaccine against smallpox, and led a successful expedition to administer the vaccines in the Spanish colonial possessions of the Western hemisphere an

Infectious and parasitic diseases plague honey bees similarly to that of other food animal species. A complete understanding of each is necessary for a honey bee veterinarian to establish a strong veterinarian-client-patient relationship and make sound treatment recommendations. Control and management of these diseases is paramount to success of the colony and apiary operation. The following is not meant to be an end-all of information on each of the common honey bee diseases but more so a review and photo-documentation of each. A deeper understanding can be established through various other s

Thionamides, such as methimazole and propylthiouracil, are used for the management of hyperthyroidism. Agranulocytosis is a rare adverse effect of thionamides and elderly patients are especially vulnerable. Here we discuss a case of an 80-year-old woman who developed agranulocytosis and pneumonia approximately 4 weeks after starting low dose methimazole therapy. Despite aggressive treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics and granulocyte colony stimulating factor, she developed multiorgan failure and died. Our goals are to identify risk factors common to elderly patients and hopefully improve

Excessive use of the internet for gambling, gaming and behavioural addiction, are a focus of contemporary interest. The authors delve into the archives to explore the connections between the growth of various forms of technology, commerce, addictive behaviours and responses of the State, in colonial India. The interplay between the growth of the telegraph network in 19th century India, and its influence on various forms of gambling, including speculation on opium prices, and the rain, as a theme of wager make interesting stories, as do the governmental responses to these. In a preterm infant, small-for-gestational age, neutropenia persisted from the birth, and periomphalitis symptoms appeared at 23 days of age. Upon administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, the neutrophil count increased, and periomphalitis was recovered. At the same time, the umbilical cord separated at 44 days of age. The human neutrophil antigen (HNA) of the infant was 1a/1b, and antineutrophil antibody for HNA-1b was present in both serums of the mother and the infant at birth, indicating a diagnosis of alloimmune neutropenia. This case demonstrated a definite relationship be

Photodynamic therapy has been applied successfully against cutaneous and subcutaneous mycoses. We applied methylene blue as a photosensitizing agent and light emitting diode (InGaAlP) against Sporothrix schenckii complex species in an in vitro assay. The viability of the conidia was determined by counting colony-forming units. Methylene blue in conjunction with laser irradiation was able to inhibit the growth of all tested samples. The in vitro inhibition of Sporothrix spp. isolates by laser light deserves in vivo experimental and clinical studies since it may be a promising treatment for cuta

Cyclic neutropenia is a rare haematologic disorder. This case report presents a 6-year-old girl who was referred in order to treat gingival recession, and was finally diagnosed as having cyclic neutropenia based on an oral examination, complete blood counts and a sternal puncture bone marrow test. The patient received systematic granulocyte colony-stimulating factor therapy, full-mouth scaling and root planing and was followed up for 4 years. Due to irregular periodontal maintenance and poor oral hygiene, severe gingival inflammation and deep pockets persisted in the permanent dentition of the

Of the six cytokine therapies approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, five of them have been used in patients with primary immunodeficiency (PID). In some applications, clear benefits have been demonstrated, while in others, effects have been more marginal. The most compelling current applications of cytokine therapy in PID are those of granulocyte colony stimulating factor in severe congenital neutropenia and interferon gamma in chronic granulomatous disease. Despite encouraging results with interleukin-2 in common variable immunodeficiency and select other indications, its use in PI

Zygomycosis constitutes the third leading cause of invasive fungal infections following aspergillosis and candidosis. Patients with haematologic malignancies or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation are particularly susceptible to zygomycosis. Neutropenia represents the most important pathogenic mechanism influencing the onset and outcome of zygomycosis. Neutrophils cause a lesion of the fungal wall with subsequent destruction by macrophages. They also enhance the activity of antifungal drugs against Zygomycetes. Strategies that aim to increase neutrophil count and function, such as granulo

The pathogenesis and pathology of 421 cases of shoulder ulcerations in sows were examined and compared with 95 normal shoulders. The ulcerations started on the surface as a result of thrombosis and gradually progressed inwards to the tuber spina scapula. At each stage the lesions contained multiple bacterial colonies, and as the ulcerations progressed the amount of granulation tissues and fibroplasia increased. In 45 of the 95 normal shoulders there were areas of acute haemorrhage, oedema and fibroplasia, which followed the cords of normal fibrous tissue. However, in these cases the tissue was

A 25-year-old man was examined for tinea corporis. Microscopic examination of direct 10% KOH mount of skin scraping revealed the presence of hyaline, septate, branching hyphae. Cultures inoculated with portions of skin scrapings yielded, after two weeks Trichophyton simii. The identification of the fungus was based on colony morphology on mycobiotic agar and microscopic characteristics on slide cultures. Microscopic features of T. simii were cylindrical, 3-7 celled, thin-walled macroconidia. In older culture, macroconidia converted into chlamydospores, which is an important characteristic of T

In this report, we describe a case of disseminated sporotrichosis that was diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The cytologic smears exhibited a large number of macrophages, few polymorphonuclear neutrophils and numerous round or oval, sometimes elongated, isolated and scattered yeast-like structures localized extracellularly or inside macrophages. These structures were clearly visualized by Giemsa and Papanicolaou methods. Cultures from skin biopsy material revealed fungal colonies which were subsequently identified as Sporothrix schenckii. The cytologic aspects, the correlation

A novel assay was developed for the detection of Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) spores. The assay is based on the fluorescence observed after binding an aptamer-quantum dot conjugate to BT spores. The in vitro selection and amplification technique called SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment) was used in order to identify the DNA aptamer sequence specific for BT. The 60 base aptamer was then coupled to fluorescent zinc sulfide-capped, cadmium selenide quantum dots (QD). The assay is semi-quantitative, specific and can detect BT at concentrations of about 1,000 colony fo

PURPOSE: To report agranulocytosis associated with lamotrigine (LTG) in a patient with a brain tumor.
METHODS: A 59-year-old woman with a low-grade glioma and difficult-to-control partial seizures developed agranulocytosis between 9 and 14 weeks after starting LTG. The patient underwent chemotherapy 2 years previously.
RESULTS: After stopping LTG, the agranulocytosis persisted for 9 days despite 7 days of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and ultimately resolved.
CONCLUSIONS: In this case, the use of LTG was associated with the development of agranulocytosis, and it is likely t

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the significance of traditional index on the identification of Bacillus anthracis and its correlation with pathogenic strains.
METHODS: Routine bacteriologic methods and PCR of virulence genes were used to determine the difference on traditional identification index between pathogenic and nonpathogenic Bacillus.
RESULTS: The characteristics of colony, with hemolysis and mobility both negative are the important interrelated characters of pathogenic strains of Bacillus anthracis.
CONCLUSION: To judge the risk of anthrax, virulence of genes must be first defined. Some tr

In this study we present a case of coexisting systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and myelofibrosis. Literature review supports the fact that the two diseases rarely occur together in the same patient. The young female patient studied was admitted with pancytopenia and a clinical picture which met the criteria of SLE. Histological examination of the bone marrow biopsy revealed severe myelofibrosis with hypocellularity of the myeloid cell lines. Treatment with immunosuppressive and colony stimulating factor led to slow but complete regeneration of the bone marrow and subsequently to an improved

Sweet's syndrome was diagnosed in a 4-month-old boy. He was successfully treated with systemic corticosteroids. At the age of 8 months, he developed acute arthritis in his right knee. The synovial fluid was analyzed and revealed a very high neutrophil count and neutrophil activation with a detectable level of intraarticular granulocyte-monocyte colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF). Prednisone injection into the knee led to dramatic improvement. No recurrence occurred. Although arthritis and/or arthralgia are common features in adult patients with Sweet's syndrome, this is the first reported case

A 43-year-old female patient with Basedow-Graves' disease developed agranulocytosis in the eighth month of propylthiouracil therapy. After discontinuing the drug, a broad spectrum antibiotic regimen plus recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), a human haematopoietic growth factor, were started. Her granulocyte count returned to normal with the second dose of G-CSF, and ulcerating pharyngitis improved rapidly. We think that in patients with propylthiouracil-induced agranulocytosis, G-CSF will reduce the risk and severity of infection, and should be accepted as a part of

Thyrotoxicosis is a common endocrine disorder. Antithyroid drug therapy is the standard treatment for this disease, especially in young women of reproductive age. A serious side effect of antithyroid drug use, however, is agranulocytosis. We report on two patients with antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis. Both patients presented with fever and severe neutropenia. The administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor resulted in a dramatic improvement in the white blood cell count and symptoms. Antithyroid drug-induced agranulocytosis is a potentially lethal condition but is complete

We report the cloning of a gene from the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans with sequence and functional similarity to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae SIR2 gene. Deletion of the gene in C. albicans produces a dramatic phenotype: variant colony morphologies arise at frequencies as high as 1 in 10. The morphologies resemble those described previously as part of a phenotypic switching system proposed to contribute to pathogenesis. Deletion of SIR2 also produces a high frequency of karyotypic changes. These and other results are consistent with a model whereby Sir2 controls phenotypic switching a
