Immediate and delayed lateral ridge expansion technique in the atrophic posterior mandibular ridge.

PURPOSE: The lateral ridge expansion technique is used to expand the narrow edentulous ridge for implant placement. The staged approach can be used to split the mandibular ridge to decrease the risk of malfracture during osteotomy. The present study reports the clinical results of a surgical technique that expands a narrow mandibular ridge using an immediate and a delayed lateral expansion technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 32 patients with a narrow edentulous posterior mandibular ridge of 2 to 4 mm were included in the present study, and 84 implants were placed. Of the 32 patients,

Attitude of the canine in secondary bone-grafted and nongrafted patients with cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the eruption pattern of the cleft-side canine regarding its pre-eruption position relative to the cleft in bone-gr … e angle as it had before grafting. However, in NonBG patients, it erupts more vertically, guided by cortical bone. For canines distant from the cleft area, there is no significant difference in the change in angulation between NonBG and BG patients.

Comparison of quantitative ultrasound in the human calcaneus with mechanical failure loads of the hip and spine.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative ultrasound of the calcaneus is used clinically for evaluating bone fracture risk, but its association with the mecha … of quantitative ultrasound with femoral and vertebral failure may result from the influence of the cortical bone and a higher microstructure-related similarity of the calcaneus and the femur.

X-linked hypophosphatemia in adults: prevalence of skeletal radiographic and scintigraphic features.

The radiologic studies of 38 essentially untreated adults with X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) were reviewed to determine the prevalence of radiologic features, to compare the findings in men and in women, and to elucidate the natural history of the disease by comparing the findings in young, intermediate-age, and older patients. Bone-reinforcement lines were common, but no characteristic mineral mass alteration was established. Looser zones were more prevalent in older subjects. Osteoarthritis was common, occurring in the ankles, knees, feet, sacroiliac joints, and wrists. Enthesopathy was in

Efficiency and three-dimensional effects of maxillary canine distalization using Blue Elgiloy T-loop mechanics: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Controlled maxillary canine distalization is biomechanically challenging due to the long root and proximity to the buccal cortical plate. Although frictionless T-loop mechanics are widely used, clinical evidence focusing on Blue Elgiloy alloys assessed with three-dimensional imaging remains limited. METHODS: This prospective study included 20 patients contributing 61 maxillary canines. Canine distalization was performed using frictionless Blue Elgiloy T-loop mechanics with miniscrew anchorage. The primary outcome was assessed by measuring the R3-miniscrew distance at baseline (T0)

Bone health in older men.

Senile osteoporosis in men remains under-recognized despite substantial fracture-related morbidity and higher post-fracture mortality than in women. Age-related bone loss in men involves progressive trabecular thinning, cortical deterioration, and declining sex steroid levels, while secondary causes, including hypogonadism, medications, and chronic diseases, account for up to 60% of cases. Current guidelines recommend assessment of bone mineral density (BMD) in men aged ≥70 years and earlier screening in those with clinical risk factors, complemented by fracture-risk assessment and evaluation

Bone Marrow-Derived Inducible Microglia-like Cells Promote Recovery of Chronic Ischemic Stroke Through Modulating Neuroinflammation in Mice.

Background: Chronic ischemic stroke presents a significant challenge in neurology, with limited therapeutic options available for long-term recovery. During cerebral infarction, anti-inflammatory phenotype microglia/macrophages produce anti-inflammatory cytokines and neurotrophic factors that facilitate the process of brain repair. However, obtaining sufficient anti-inflammatory microglia/macrophages from the human central nervous system is challenging. Bone marrow-derived inducible microglia-like cells (BM-iMGs) with an anti-inflammatory microglial phenotype were explored to induce neuroprote

Biomechanical design prognosis of two extramedullary fixation devices for subtrochanteric femur fracture: a finite element study.

The design rationale of extramedullary fixation for femur fracture has remained a matter of debate in the orthopaedic community. The present work provides a comparative preclinical assessment between two standard fracture fixation techniques: dynamic hip screw (DHS) and proximal femoral locking plate (PFLP), by employing finite element (FE)-based in silico models. The study attempts to evaluate and compare the two implants on following biomechanical behaviours: (1) stress variation on the femur and implant, (2) axial displacement of the fixated femur constructs, (3) postoperative stress shield

Increased FGF23 protects against detrimental cardio-renal consequences during elevated blood phosphate in CKD.

The phosphaturic hormone FGF23 is elevated in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The risk of premature death is substantially higher in the CKD patient population, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the leading mortality cause at all stages of CKD. Elevated FGF23 in CKD has been associated with increased odds for all-cause mortality; however, whether FGF23 is associated with positive adaptation in CKD is unknown. To test the role of FGF23 in CKD phenotypes, a late osteoblast/osteocyte conditional flox-Fgf23 mouse (Fgf23fl/fl/Dmp1-Cre+/-) was placed on an adenine-containing diet to induce CKD. Ser

A fetal case of microphthalmia and limb anomalies with abnormal neuronal migration associated with SMOC1 biallelic variants.

Microphthalmia with limb anomalies (MLA, OMIM, 206920) is a rare autosomal-recessive disease caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the SMOC1 gene. It is characterized by ocular disorders (microphtalmia or anophtalmia) and limb anomalies (oligodactyly, syndactyly, and synostosis of the 4th and 5th metacarpals), variably associated with long bone hypoplasia, horseshoe kidney, venous anomalies, vertebral anomalies, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. Here, we report the case of a woman who interrupted her pregnancy after ultrasound scans revealed a depression of the frontal bon

Chicken anemia virus inhibits hematopoiesis and development of chicken embryo.

Chicken anemia virus (CAV), when primarily transmitted through the vertical route, could result in a significant global prevalence. Specifically, vertical CAV transmission, especially in newly-hatched chicks, may cause anemia and immunosuppression, leading to significant losses in the global poultry industry. Although CAV infection of chick embryos is critical in its vertical transmission, the pathogenicity of CAV in these embryos remains unclear. Herein, CAV-infected chick embryos exhibited a reduced hatchability rate, decreased embryo weight, and anemia. Furthermore, histopathological findin
