Fruits are important in the diet because of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals they provide for a healthy life; however, they can also serve as a potential source of opportunistic pathogens, including enterococci. They are considered zoonotic pathogens that cause severe infections in humans. This work aimed to isolate Enterococcus faecalis from fruit surfaces and to detect its virulence genes, biofilm-forming ability, and antibiotic resistance patterns. A total of 76 samples of seven different types of fruits were collected and surface-washed, and used to isolate and identify E. faecalis by

The Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) farming industry in China, particularly in Hainan Province, has grown substantially, yet it faces increasing threats from infectious diseases. Providencia spp., especially P. rettgeri, are increasingly reported in reptilian disease outbreaks, but their epidemiological and pathogenic profiles in farmed C. siamensis remain poorly understood. In this study, necropsy and histopathological examination of 18 deceased juvenile Siamese crocodiles from three farms in Hainan Province, China, revealed severe multiorgan lesions indicative of septicemia. Sixty-f

Dairy farm waste may serve as a reservoir for multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli clones, but the genomic characteristics and dissemination potential of such clones remain incompletely understood. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing and comprehensive genomic analysis of 64 MDR E. coli strains isolated from feces and sewage samples collected from two large dairy farms in Gansu Province, China. Genomic analysis revealed that strains carried 16-32 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), 1-6 plasmid replicon types, and 26-96 virulence genes (VGs), with numerically higher (though not stat

Enteric fever is a common systemic infection characterised by high grade fever and variable gastrointestinal symptoms. Splenic abscesses, thrombosis, and infarcts are uncommon complications. We report a case of splenic infarction in a young female presenting with persistent fever and abdominal pain. Her blood culture showed drugresistant Salmonella Typhi (S.Typhi). Due to persistent abdominal pain, abdominal imaging was performed, which revealed multiple splenic infarcts. Treatment with appropriate antibiotics led to complete resolution of symptoms. This case emphasises the importance of timel

BACKGROUND: The rapid emergence of multiple drug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens and the lack of a novel antibiotic pipeline pose a serious threat to global healthcare. The limited number of established targets further restricts the identification of novel antibiotics to treat life-threatening MDR infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus strains. Therefore, novel targets for developing antibiotics are urgently required. In this study, we hypothesized that the G-quadruplex (G4)-binding ligands can be used as novel antibiotics as their binding can possibly downregulate/block the expression

The emergence of bacterial ESKAPE pathogens presents a formidable challenge to global health, necessitating the development of innovative strategies for antibiotic discovery. Here, we leverage chemical synthetic lethality to locate therapeutic combinations of small molecules against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using a transposon screen, we identify PyrD as a target for sensitizing P. aeruginosa to subinhibitory doses of ceftazidime. High-throughput inhibitor screens identify two PyrD inhibitors, nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) and chlorhexidine (CHX), each of which does not si

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative clinical pathogen, particularly affecting immunocompromised patients, those with cystic fibrosis, and burn victims. It causes chronic infections, especially in hospital settings, and is a significant contributor to nosocomial infections. Its capacity to create biofilms resistant to antibiotics is the reason for its infamous persistence in clinical settings. P. aeruginosa infections can affect any area of the body because the bacteria's biofilm enables it to stick to any surface, living or non-living. One of the primary clinical challenges in treating P

Agricultural wastewater, a significant component of the anthropogenic water cycle, often contains complex mixtures of contaminants, including non-antibiotic feed additives, posing largely uncharacterized risks for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) evolution. This study addresses the critical knowledge gap regarding the combined impact of commonly co-occurring roxarsone (ROX) and heavy metals (Zn, Cu) at environmentally relevant concentrations on the de novo evolution and persistence of multidrug resistance in aquatic environments. Using a 90-day laboratory evolution experiment with Escherichia co

Acinetobacter baumannii, a Gram-negative WHO critical priority pathogen, is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen associated with increasing hospital- and community-acquired infections. The emergence of a multidrug-resistant pathogen, especially the carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB), has left us with extremely limited treatment options and, consequently, very high morbidity and mortality rates. As per WHO, the transmissibility of A. baumannii is considered between moderate to high. This review provides a unique comprehensive insight into pathogen's global epidemiology, pathogenesis, host-
