Cochlear Implant Surgery and Electrically-evoked Auditory Brainstem Response Recordings in C57BL/6 Mice.

Cochlear implants (CIs) are neuroprosthetic devices that can provide a sense of hearing to deaf people. However, a CI cannot restore all aspects of hearing. Improvement of the implant technology is needed if CI users are to perceive music and perform in more natural environments, such as hearing out a voice with competing talkers, reflections, and other sounds. Such improvement requires experimental animals to better understand the mechanisms of electric stimulation in the cochlea and its responses in the whole auditory system. The mouse is an increasingly attractive model due to the many gene…

Refining the Deep Brain Stimulation Target within the Limbic Globus Pallidus Internus for Tourette Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) in patients with severe, refractory Tourette syndrome (TS) has demonstrated promising but variable results thus far. The thalamus and anteromedial globus pallidus internus (amGPi) have been the most commonly stimulated sites within the cortico-striato thalamic circuit, but an optimal target is yet to be elucidated. OBJECTIVES: This study of 15 patients with long-term amGPi DBS for severe TS investigated whether a specific anatomical site within the amGPi correlated with optimal clinical outcome for the measures of tics, obsessive compulsive behaviour (

Role of capsaicin-sensitive nerve fibers in uterine contractility in the rat.

The possible participation of capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves in the modulation of neurogenic contractions was studied in nonpregnant and term pregnant rat uteri. Neurogenic contractions were elicited by electric field stimulation (40 V, 1-70 Hz, 0.6 msec) in intact uteri and uteri that were previously exposed to capsaicin in vitro. In capsaicin pretreated preparations obtained both from nonpregnant and term pregnant rats, a dose-dependent increase in the amplitude of uterine contractions was detected. Prior systemic treatment of the rats with capsaicin (130 mg/kg, s.c.) abolished the effec

[Objective methods for simulated detection of unilateral deafness with special reference to DPOAE (distortion-product otoacoustic emissions) exemplified by a case report].

The simulation of unilateral deafness is very rare. Objective findings are of special interest if it happens. A patient with alleged deafness on the left-hand side due to commotio cerebri was treated in our hospital. Pure tone audiometry showed deafness on the left-hand side and normal hearing on the right-hand side. However, stapedius reflexes were found ipsilaterally left as well as contralaterally right, at 0.5 to 2 kHz with a stimulation of approximately 90 dB SPL. Transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) were measured. The TEOAE

The mechanism of lenticular accommodation in chicks.

In the chick eye, accommodation for near objects is brought about by changes in the focal length of the lens and by changes in the corneal radius of curvature. Several different mechanisms of lenticular accommodation have been proposed for the avian eye. These include a role for the ciliary muscle, a role for the iris muscle, and a role for changes in intraocular pressure. We have studied accommodation in the chick eye using electrical stimulation of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus, electric-field stimulation of enucleated eyes, in vitro measurement of changes in back vertex distance of the lens,

Selective disturbances of serum mineral profiles by electroconvulsive therapy.

In nine patients with severe affective illness, the serum profiles of Mn, Zn, Cu, Mg, and Ca before and following successful bitemporal electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) were investigated. No elemental baseline abnormalities were detected before ECT. Both high and low level electric stimulation failed to produce changes in the serum concentrations of Mg as a function of time after ECT. Group mean concentrations of Zn, Cu, and Ca decreased after ECT, but values did not reach statistical significance. In contrast high level, but not low level, stimulation was accompanied by significant brief eleva…

Interleaving programming in pallidal deep brain stimulation improves outcomes in a patient with Meige syndrome.

We present the effectiveness of interleaving programming in pallidal deep brain stimulation in a patient with Meige syndrome. This patient's symptoms were initially inadequately relieved by conventional programming methods. Then, we switched to the interleaving programming strategy, which produced an individual electrical density and improved her symptoms significantly.

A treatment of detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia: pudendal nerve block by phenolglycerin under the guide of direct nerve stimulation.

While applying direct electrical stimulation to the pudendal nerve and recording of electromyographic reactions of bulbocavernosus muscle and/or transverse perineal muscle, pudendal nerve block by phenol was performed for the treatment of dysuria due to detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia, resulting in a favourable response. The technique and the cases treated with this nerve block are presented.

Botulinus toxin: effect on the central nervous system of man.

Electrical stimulation of multiple peripheral nerves, elicited "H" reflexes in a patient, 61 years old, with botulism. These reflexes are extremely suggestive of some central release or failure of inhibitory control of a monosynaptic or polysynaptic spinal reflex arc. This "central" action of botulinus toxin is similar to that suggested for tetanus toxin.

Origins and conducting pathways of motor evoked potentials elicited by transcranial (vertex-hard palate) stimulation in cats.

Spinal cord evoked potentials were elicited in cats by transcranial electrical stimulation with electrodes on the vertex and hard palate. Vertex motor evoked potentials (V-MEP) were also recorded. An extracellular microelectrode recording technique was then used to analyze the results by isopotential mapping. The relationship between the distribution of field potentials and the stimulation polarity was studied using the field potential distribution of the V-MEP in the lower thoracic spinal cord that had been represented on the isopotential maps. The first negative wave of the V-MEP showed maxi

Autonomic nervous control of fundic secretion of somatostatin and antral secretion of gastrin and somatostatin in pigs.

By selective catheterization of gastric veins, we studied the secretion of gastrin and somatostatin from the antrum and of somatostatin from the gastric fundus-corpus region in anaesthetized pigs with or without acute adrenalectomy. The secretion was studied during electrical stimulation of the vagus nerves and the splanchnic nerves and simultaneous irrigation of gastric lumen with fluids of high, low, and neutral pH. The corpus-fundus somatostatin response to vagal stimulation was biphasic with a short-lasting initial increase followed by a lasting inhibition, which was little influenced by i

Neural coordination of bilateral hand movements: evidence for an involvement of brainstem motor centres.

Bilateral hand movements are assumed to be coordinated by a neural coupling mechanism. Neural coupling is experimentally reflected in complex electromyographic (EMG) responses in the forearm muscles of both sides to unilateral electrical arm nerve stimulation (ES). The aim of this study was to examine a potential involvement of the reticulospinal system in neural coupling by the application of loud acoustic stimuli (LAS) known to activate neurons of this system. LAS, ES and combined LAS/ES were applied to healthy subjects during visually guided bilateral hand flexion-extension movements. Muscl

[(3)H]-serotonin release from bovine iris-ciliary body: pharmacology of prejunctional serotonin (5-HT(7)) autoreceptors.

In the present study, we investigated the pharmacological characteristics of electrically stimulated [(3)H]-serotonin release from mammalian iris-ciliary bodies. Isolated bovine and human iris-ciliary bodies were loaded with [(3)H]-serotonin, superfused with Krebs buffer solution and then stimulated with trains of 300 direct current (d.c.) pulses to initiate the release of the transmitter. The modification of this [(3)H]-serotonin release process by various serotonergic agonists and antagonists was studied in order to define the pharmacology of serotonin receptor(s) present in the iris-ciliary

Sympathomimetic modulation of load-dependent changes in the action potential duration in the in situ porcine heart.

AIMS: Increased sympathetic stimulation is known to be arrhythmogenic. Likewise increased loading of the myocardium can directly generate arrhythmias. The interaction between the two on the electrophysiology of the myocardium has not been investigated before. We investigated the effect of dobutamine infusion on the shortening of the monophasic action potential duration secondary to increased loading. This was investigated during steady-state pacing and during an alteration in beat-to-beat interval in the form of a restitution curve. METHODS: Pigs were anaesthetised and their hearts exposed. M

Active fixation atrial leads: randomized comparison of two lead designs.

Active fixation leads have reduced the incidence of lead dislodgement in patients with permanent pacemakers. However, theoretic concern that the tissue trauma associated with a myocardial screw-helix may increase the chronic pacing threshold of active compared to passive fixation leads has remained. Whether active fixation leads with a stimulating electrode that is independent of the fixation mechanism are associated with a lower chronic pacing threshold than leads utilizing a screw-helix for both fixation and stimulation is unknown. The present prospective, randomized study compared the acute

Sequential bioelectric programming of Macrophages via ferroelectric nanostructured surface to combat implant infection and promote bone integration.

Implant-associated infections impair osseointegration by suppressing macrophage-mediated antibacterial responses and blocking reparative phenotype transition, while conventional antimicrobial strategies may compromise bone regeneration. Although electrical stimulation holds promise for macrophage modulation, achieving spatiotemporally controlled bioelectrical regulation remains a challenge. Herein, we engineered a ferroelectric barium titanate-nanostructured titanium implant (ferroTi) that enables sequentially controlled electrical manipulation of macrophages for coordinated antibacterial acti
