A 20-y-old male intact white-faced saki monkey (Pithecia pithecia) presented with an acute ocular disease of the right eye. Clinical signs included periocular swelling, conjunctivitis, and anisocoria with a miotic right pupil. Conjunctival swabs were positive for Human herpesvirus 1 (HHV1) according to PCR amplification with sequencing. Initial clinical signs resolved with supportive treatment, and the animal was managed chronically by using acyclovir (5 mg/kg PO twice daily) during flare-ups. After more than 2 y, the progression of clinical disease led to enucleation of the right eye. At 2 mo

BACKGROUND: Stevens-Johnson syndrome is one of the manifestations of mucocutaneous adverse drug reactions. Although antimicrobials are responsible for greater than 50% of these adverse drug reactions, there is no documented case implicating ivermectin as the culprit. A 38 year old adult Cameroonian male presented to our health facility with facial rash, painful oral sores, black eschars on lips and red tearing eyes 3 days following ingestion of ivermectin received during a nationwide anti-filarial campaign. He had no known chronic illness, no known allergies and was not on any medications prio

Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU) has various etiologies, with Leptospira infection and genetic predisposition being the leading risk factors. Regardless of etiology, expression of ocular proteins associated with maintenance of the blood-ocular barrier is impaired in ERU. The recurring-remitting cycle of ERU repeatedly disrupts the blood-ocular barrier, allowing the previously immune-privileged ocular environment to become the site of a progressive local autoimmune pathology that ultimately results in tissue destruction and vision loss. The immune-mediated process involves humoral and cellular me

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE. To report a case of scleral dislocation mimicking glaucoma progression.
METHODS: Interventional case report.
RESULTS: A 71-year-old man was referred for glaucoma surgery in his right eye because of perimetry defect progression and uncontrolled intraocular pressure despite maximal medical therapy. A scleral buckling procedure in his right eye was previously performed for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. At the time of presentation, a visible protruded sponge buckle element was noted at ocular inspection, without any sign of infection. The buckle element was posteriorly

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With improvements in molecular diagnostics tests, viruses are increasingly being found to be associated with what was previously described as idiopathic anterior uveitis. This review presents the clinical features of viral anterior uveitis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Herpes simplex virus/varicella zoster virus (HSV/VZV) are important causes of anterior uveitis, but other viruses including cytomegalovirus (CMV) and rubella are also found in a significant number of cases. The various viral anterior uveitides have similar features and should be suspected in eyes with diffuse, fine, stel

This study was set up to review cases of orbital cellulitis admitted to the eye ward of our hospital between 1994 and 1998, and to compare the findings with similar studies. Twenty-one (14 males, 7 females, age range 45 days to 50 years [mean 13 years]) of 35 patients with an initial diagnosis of orbital cellulitis were reviewed (14 patients were excluded from the final analysis). Most of the cases were associated with pansinusitis, the commonest organism isolated being Staphylococcus aureus. All the patients were co-managed with ortorhinolaryngologists, and sometimes also with bacteriologists

The authors determined fungi concentrations and genera from onion fields located in monsoon and nonmonsoon areas of Taiwan, as well as concentrations from a county housing location, which served as the comparison site. The authors explored the relationship(s) among onion harvesting, monsoon characteristics, airborne fungal levels, and mycotic eye infection. Airborne fungal levels in the onion field in the nonmonsoon area were the highest, followed by decreasing levels in the monsoon area and control sites, regardless of the sampling periods. The geometric mean of airborne fungal concentrations

In recent years tuberculosis has reemerged as a serious public health problem, raising the possibility that tuberculous eye disease may also become more prevalent. The predominant route by which tubercle bacilli reach the eye is through the bloodstream, after infecting the lungs. The pulmonary loci might not be evident clinically or radiographically. The most common manifestation of ocular tuberculosis in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis is choroiditis. Retinal periphlebitis is rarely caused by direct invasion of the retina by tubercle bacilli. Retinal tuberculosis is usually, but not alwa

Toxoplasmosis-retinochorioiditis is the second most frequent opportunistic infection of the eye among our series of AIDS patients. Between 1985 and 1990 we diagnosed 7 cases in 261 AIDS patients (Walter Reed classification 6); prevalence = 2.7%). The incidence has been increasing over the years. In four cases, toxoplasmosis was restricted to the eye, in three cases, ocular disease occurred combined with toxoplasmosis of the central nervous system. Since serological findings are not very reliable in AIDS-patients, the most important element in the differential diagnosis against retinitis of dif

Ocular manifestations in patients infected with human T-lymphotropic retrovirus type I (HTLV-I) consisted of a wide range of neoplastic, infectious and noninfectious vascular or inflammatory lesions. These disorders were associated with two distinct HTLV-I-induced systemic diseases, ie, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy. Five of the 10 cases of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma had inflammatory or opportunistic infectious ocular lesions, including cytomegalovirus retinitis or eyelid tumor as part of generalized lymphomas. Four of the 17 cases of HTLV-I-associated mye

Two compounds, bromovinyldeoxyuridine ([E]-5-[2-bromovinyl]-2'-deoxyuridine) and trifluridine (5-trifluoromethyl-2' deoxyuridine) were compared for their efficacy in the topical treatment of experimental stroma herpetic keratitis produced by the injection of live herpes simplex virus, type 1, into the corneal stroma of rabbits. The trifluridine was used as 1% eyedrops, whereas bromovinyldeoxyuridine was used as either 0.1% or 0.5% eyedrops. All three treatment regimens caused a substantial healing of stroma disease in comparison with placebo treatment. The bromovinyldeoxyuridine (whether used

The prevalence and distribution of trachoma in the Sudan has been studied. The morbidity rate of 83.2 per 1000 in the Northern Province decreases southwards until it reaches 0.94 in the extreme south (Equatoria Province). 2. In endemic areas infection starts very early--in the first year of life. 3. There is a marked difference between the prevalence of trachoma in towns and villages--71.3 per cent for the age group 1-4 years in villages, and 56.7 per cent for the same age group in the towns. This is probably due to better standards of living and hygiene in the towns. 4. Some relationship has

PURPOSE: Postoperative endophthalmitis is a relatively uncommon, but potentially visually devastating, complication associated with cataract surgery. Specific microbial causes of endophthalmitis are characteristically associated with particular disease time courses. Although Cutibacterium acnes is typically associated with an indolent course of inflammation, we report a case of C. acnes endophthalmitis with onset on postoperative day (POD) 1 and a positive culture from POD 2.
METHODS: This is a case report.
RESULTS: A 56-year-old man underwent cataract extraction and posterior chamber intrao

BACKGROUND: Countries of eastern Europe are considered, due to several risk factors, more vulnerable to infections with newly (re)emerging pathogens. During the last decade, in several European countries, reports of autochthonous cases of ocular thelaziosis due to Thelazia callipaeda have been published, posing a great concern from both veterinary and public health perspective. However, in the Republic of Moldova only limited epidemiological data are available regarding zoonotic vector-borne pathogens and, until now, no data exist on the zoonotic nematode T. callipaeda.
METHODS: In September
