Role of kin and nonkin support in the mental health of low-income women.

Data from the Worcester Family Research Project were analyzed to determine whether social support processes are altered by poverty and whether kin and nonkin support are differentially related to mental health in low-income mothers. The authors found that conflict with family and friends predicted adverse mental health and more strongly predicted these outcomes than emotional and instrumental support. Moreover, sibling conflict was a stronger predictor of mental health than parent conflict. Finally, only instrumental support from professionals predicted mental health.

[Adolescents who sexually abuse children].

The adolescents responsible for sexual abuses on children confront the medico-psycho-social workers with many questions. In this article, thanks to a bibliographical approach, we first discuss the definitions concerning sexual abuses and paedophilia as well as family, psychodynamic and legal specificities of adolescents. We then mention a few epidemiological facts as well as the different behavioural cognitive, psychodynamic and family hypotheses related to that problem. We finally illustrate all this through two clinical cases encountered during our ambulatory exercise and submit some thinkin

Predictors of depression in street youth.

The extent of depression and other psychiatric problems among adolescent "street" and homeless populations is largely undocumented. Using a sample of 145 adolescent street youth interviewed in Toronto, Canada, this study attempted to extend the knowledge of street youth by examining the association of depression with alcohol and drug use and related problems, social supports, self-esteem, family background, and alcohol and drug use among family members. The results indicated that the best predictors of depression among street youth were self-esteem and length of time spent in a hostel.

Familial syringomyelia: case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of familial syringomyelia consisting of two sisters, one of whom had syringomyelia and Chiari type I malformation and the other, who had died 5 years earlier, had syringomyelia and Klippel-Feil syndrome. Although syringomyelia is uncommon and familial cases rare, they continue to be reported from time to time. Review of the literature certainly suggests that genetic factors play a part in the etiopathogenesis of syringomyelia related to abnormalities of the hindbrain structures, although the number of cases is too small for the exact nature of transmission be established.

Inflammatory changes in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

Fifteen patients (10 familial and 5 sporadic cases) with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy were studied with regard to the presence of inflammatory changes. Mononuclear infiltrations were not characteristic of any stage of the disease, but they may be present in differing degrees during the whole course of the process. However, their lack or presence was uniform in the affected families, suggesting that the appearance of infiltrations may be genetically determined. Parallel with the presence of cell infiltrations, the serum creatine kinase (CK) activity was moderately increased and the progress of

[A solitary central maxillary incisor and holoprosencephaly in siblings].

In families in which holoprosencephaly seems to be inherited by a rare dominant autosomal mutation, some individuals exhibit a single central maxillary incisor (SCMI). This anomaly was considered a minimal manifestation of the gene for holoprosencephaly. We report on a family, in which one child suffered from median cleft lip and palate and alobar holoprosencephaly, whereas the other child only had a SCMI. In the father and his sister lateral upper incisors were absent. Therefore the question is raised as to whether this anomaly may be related to the same condition.

[Clinico-genealogic study of schizophrenia with a predominantly obsessive course].

A clinico-genealogic study of 66 patients with neurosis-like schizophrenia showed a certain genetic heterogeneity of schizophrenia with obsessions. In cases of an unfavourable course of the schizophrenic process in a proband (a malignant disease of obsessions), the familial background was largely determined by disturbances of the schizophrenic spectrum. In cases of a slow progression of the disease (slowly progressive pseudoneurotic schizophrenia), the hereditary background was characterized by a great variability of psychopathological manifestations. Along with schizophrenia-related abnormali

Past trauma and present functioning of patients attending a women's psychiatric clinic.

A women's psychiatric clinic, incorporated within a university teaching general hospital and staffed entirely by women, was opened in March of 1980. The authors studied a sample of 100 women who came to the clinic and characterized them by demographic variables, psychiatric diagnoses, health problems, chronic illness, death in the family, and traumatic incidents. Death in the family before she was 18 was found to predict a woman's subsequent request for or completion of sterilization. Physical or sexual abuse was significantly related to abortion, and abortion and trauma were significantly cor

Family Mealtimes in Hispanic Households: Associations of General Parenting Styles and Food Parenting Practices with Adolescent Food Group Intake.

Background/Objectives: Hispanic adolescents experience disproportionately high rates of obesity and diet-related health risks, yet the family and parenting factors that shape their dietary behaviors remain incompletely understood. This study examined associations between parent sociodemographic characteristics and family meal frequency; among general parenting styles, food parenting practices, and family meal frequency; and between family meal frequency and adolescent intake across major USDA food groups, among Hispanic parent-adolescent dyads. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was cond

Family and community resilience: a Photovoice study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), in combination with adverse community environments, can result in traumatic stress reactions, increasing a person's risk for chronic physical and mental health conditions. Family resilience refers to the ability of families to withstand and rebound from adversity; it involves coping with disruptions as well as positive growth in the face of sudden or challenging life events, trauma, or adversities. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to family and community resilience from the perspective of families who self-identified as having

Familial screening in case of acute myocarditis reveals inherited arrhythmogenic left ventricular cardiomyopathies.

AIMS: Several data suggest that acute myocarditis could be related to genetic variants involved in familial cardiomyopathies, particularly arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, but the management of patients with acute myocarditis and their families regarding their risk for having an associated inherited cardiomyopathy is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Families with at least one individual with a documented episode of acute myocarditis and at least one individual with a cardiomyopathy or a history of sudden death were included in the study. Comprehensive pedigree, including genetic testing, and histo

Familial lupus erythematosus. Clinical and immunologic features of 125 multiplex families.

Evidence for a genetic susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in humans is based on the high concordance rate observed in identical twins and on the relatively high incidence of familial cases. Although recent genetic studies have lead to significant advances in the identification of new susceptibility genes in SLE, no large clinico-pathologic study of familial SLE has been reported to date. In the present study, we describe the main clinical and immunologic features of 125 lupus multiplex families including at least 2 cases of SLE and/or discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), recrui

The Impact of Social Support: Fathers' Depressive Symptoms and Parenting Stress.

Parental depressive symptoms are positively correlated with levels of parenting stress. Greater parenting stress predicts negative outcomes for both parents and children, and worse family functioning. Social support is a key protective factor against depressive symptoms; however, minimal research has examined the relationship between social support, paternal depressive symptoms, and parenting stress among fathers. Seventy-nine fathers of children, aged 2-6 years old, completed an online survey. Mediation analyses, using Hayes' PROCESS macro, determined significant indirect effects of social su

Effectiveness of Pharmacists' Recommendations for Dental Examinations for Prevention of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw.

Bone resorption inhibitors, such as bisphosphonates, infrequently cause refractory medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Oral care, including maintaining oral hygiene and preventing oral infections, is important for preventing MRONJ. However, the extent of oral care in patients taking bisphosphonates is unclear. We recommended dental visits to 790 outpatients taking bisphosphonates who visited the pharmacy at Ehime University Hospital. The effect of this recommendation was determined by evaluating changes in the rate of dental visits within 6 months among patients with and witho

Whole exome sequencing in 18 Brazilian families with vertical transmission of non-syndromic oral clefts.

This study describes the results of whole exome sequencing in the etiological investigation and genetic counseling of families presenting with non-syndromic oral clefts with vertical transmission recorded in the Brazilian Database on Craniofacial Anomalies. Whole exome sequencing was performed in 18 families presenting with non-syndromic oral clefts with vertical transmission, and variant filtering was used to identify rare, and also possibly pathogenic variants in genes associated with oral clefts. Overall, our study identified seven families (38.88%) presented with segregating variants possi

Depression among incarcerated persons following the death of a loved one: Does social support mitigate grief?

The death of a loved one generates adverse and potentially damaging consequences for surviving family members and friends. The challenges of bereavement can be especially severe when experienced by incarcerated persons who must cope with and grieve the death while incarcerated. Yet, limited research evaluates bereavement among incarcerated persons and whether factors such as social support buffer against health-related consequences. Using data from the LoneStar Project-a study of 802 incarcerated men in Texas-we examine depressive symptoms among currently incarcerated persons with differential

Early Emergence of Rumination has no Association with Performance on a Non-affective Inhibitory Control Task.

Rumination is a vulnerability for depression and potentially linked to inhibitory control weaknesses. We aimed to replicate the association observed in adults between inhibitory control and rumination in adolescents, and to examine putative moderating roles of childhood maltreatment and perceived family cohesion in an adolescent sample at risk for depression due to familial/personal history. Ninety adolescents aged 11-17 (M = 14.6, SD = 1.8) completed self-report scales of rumination, maltreatment, and family cohesion, and performed a task assessing inhibitory control. Hierarchical regression

Analysis of secondary failure time responses in studies with response-dependent sampling schemes.

Response-dependent sampling is routinely used as an enrichment strategy in the design of family studies investigating the heritable nature of disease. In addition to the response of primary interest, investigators often wish to investigate the association between biomarkers and secondary responses related to possible comorbidities. Statistical analysis regarding genetic biomarkers and their association with the secondary outcome must address the biased sampling scheme involving the primary response. In this article, we develop composite likelihoods and two-stage estimation procedures for such

The interleukin-1 family cytokines in psoriasis: pathogenetic role and therapeutic perspectives.

Introduction: IL-1 family cytokines play an important role in the innate immune system and their uncontrolled activation and expression can initiate a pathologic inflammatory response. Their role in psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis has been studied, and they offer potential interest as therapeutic targets.Areas covered: This review focuses on the role that interleukin (IL)-1 family cytokines play in psoriasis pathogenesis, with a special focus on pustular psoriasis, and how these cytokines can be used as therapeutic targets. Using PubMed, we review the literature for arti

Adenomas as a risk factor in familial colorectal cancer: implications for screening and surveillance in the UK.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) develops from normal epithelium, through dysplastic adenoma to invasive carcinoma. In addition to familial adenomatous polyposis and Lynch syndrome, approximately 10-35% of CRCs are familial in nature. CRC screening and surveillance programmes are based on an understanding of the natural history of polyps and rely on the ability to remove premalignant lesions endoscopically before they are capable of developing invasion. There are, however, significant differences in these guidelines between the UK and the USA in relation to the weight attributed to a family history of
