OBJECTIVE: It was the aim of this study to report 3 rare fatal cases of strongyloidiasis in Kuwaiti renal transplant patients.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: All 3 cases received allografts from cadaveric donors of Asian origin, the first 2 from an Indian (transplanted on the same day) and the third from a Bangladeshi. In all 3 cases, Strongyloides stercoralis larvae were first isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage. All 3 patients were on immunosuppressive therapy which included prednisolone, thereby leading to the hyperinfection syndrome. All patients presented with gastrointestinal

Multiple lung hydatidosis associated with cardiac localization is rare, whereas large arterial localization is exceptional and involves a poor prognosis. The authors report the case of a 26-year-old man living in a rural area, without a past medical history. He presented chest pain, hydatidoptysis and syncope. A chest x-ray revealed multiple bilateral cysts. A chest CT scan detected multiple cysts in the heart, the pericardium and multiple pulmonary cysts. Echocardiography revealed cysts in the right and left auricle, the pulmonary artery as well as the pericardium. Medical three treatments we

INTRODUCTION: Humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy is an important cause of hypercalcemia associated with malignancies and has been rarely reported because of vulvar cancer.
CASE: A 65-year-old woman performed modified radical vulvectomy and bilateral lymph node dissection because of vulvar cancer was referred to our clinic with fatigue and somnolence 4 months after her operation. Calcium level was 15.9 mg/dL. There was no bone metastasis, and hypercalcemia was thought as paraneoplastic syndrome because of distant recurrence of the primary vulvar cancer.
DISCUSSION: Vulvar cancer and hypercal

Congenital coronary anomalies represent a condition often unrecognized in the living and in the dead. Investigating this condition is relevant for both clinicians and pathologists in order to identify potentially unrecognized coronary causes of sudden death. Hypoplastic coronary artery disease (HCAD) is a rare congenital abnormality reported to be associated with sudden death. We report two additional cases of previously apparently healthy people who died suddenly and were found to have HCAD at postmortem evaluation. The clinicopathologic findings are discussed along with a review of the liter

Under the term amyloidosis is meant a group of diseases with a variety of clinical symptoms characterized by extracellular deposition of insoluble pathologic fibrillar proteins in tissues and organs. A report is presented of a 93-year-old patient admitted to a multifield hospital for the treatment of cerebral vascular disorders and peripheral nervous disturbances; the patient developed signs of myocardial infarction recognized in clinical/instrumental studies and died. Primary amyloidosis with diffuse vascular lesions in internal organs was diagnosed at autopsy. The death was caused by marked

A case of spontaneous perforation of the bladder in a diabetic female patient is reported. It is a rare clinical condition, that should be suspected in patients with a past history of radiotherapy to the pelvis, enterocystoplasty and those suspected of having a tumor in the bladder. A general surgeon should be aware of this possibility in the differential diagnosis of an acute abdomen.

Osteosarcoma of the penile bone was diagnosed in a 5-year-old neutered male Rottweiler with recurrent dysuria. Imaging and cytological findings raised the suspicion for an osteosarcoma and ablation of the entire penis and scrotal urethrostomy was performed. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically. The dog recovered well and no postoperative signs of dysuria were observed. The dog survived without adjuvant chemotherapy for 12 months when multiple tumours in the thorax and abdomen led to it being euthanased. Penile osteosarcoma is a rare disease, but must be considered as a differential diagn

BACKGROUND: Pregnancies after a previous pregnancy complicated by hemolysis, elevated liver enzyme, and low platelet (HELLP) syndrome carry an increased risk of HELLP-syndrome.
CASE REPORT: We report on a 35-year-old patient with both HELLP-syndrome and fatal neonatal outcome in two subsequent pregnancies with delivery by cesarean section in the 26th and 27th gestational weeks, respectively. The children were immediately admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit but died in their postpartum period. Before the second pregnancy testing for antiphospholipid-syndrome revealed normal results.

We present a case study of a newborn girl with a left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia and a myocardial infarction (MI). The occurrence of MI in newborns has been associated with cardiac malformations and abnormalities of the coronary arteries or thromboembolization. In our patient, echocardiography revealed left ventricular dysfunction, persistent pulmonary hypertension and an inferolateral MI. Within 24 hours cardiac function and oxygenation did not improve and the baby died. Autopsy showed massive MI, a small aortic valve and ascending aorta, and hypoplasia of the distal aortic arch an

A case of severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) which developed at menstrual age of 17 weeks underwent a fetoscopic laser ablation of the anastomosing vessels. The vascular equator of the anastomoses was noticed to be deviated due to marginal cord insertion of the recipient fetus. The procedure was accomplished uneventfully. However, the recipient fetus died 6 h after the procedure. After the pregnancy was terminated, the donor was found to be counterintuitively plethoric, and the recipient was pale. Similar appearances were noted on the placental territories of each fetus. This is cons

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) presents in children after common viral infections. Most cases of ANE are non-familial and non-recurrent and have been mainly reported in Asian patients, although ANE affects children worldwide. Recently, missense mutations in the gene encoding the nuclear pore protein Ran Binding Protein 2 (RANBP2) have been found in several families with familial or recurrent cases of ANE. We describe a Spanish family with familial and recurrent ANE without mutations in RANBP2. Mutations in RANBP2 are not the sole susceptibility alleles for familial or recurrent ANE.

We report a case of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) primo infection with the development of successive infectious mononucleosis, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in a patient treated with azathioprine for Crohn's disease. This case report suggests that specific EBV-related clinical and virological management should be considered when treating a patient with inflammatory bowel disease with azathioprine.

The aim of this paper was to focus on emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN), which is a severe disease that is rarely described in intensive care literature, although it is well-considered in urology and radiology journals, with numerous case reports. A 61 year-old diabetic and obese woman admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was diagnosed with gas gangrene of the left lower limb. Within a few hours, the patient needed mechanical ventilation and high inotropic support. The abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans showed bilateral renal calculi and gas within the renal parenchyma extending to

We present a case of cutaneous and systemic infection with Scedosporium apiospermum occurring in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. Scedosporium apiospermum is a rare cause of systemic mycosis but is associated with a high rate of mortality in immunocompromised hosts. Because the patient presented in an advanced state of infection, supportive measures were unsuccessful and definitive diagnosis could not be made until postmortem examination. We discuss the presentation, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for Scedosporium infection.

Generalized tularemia was diagnosed in a vervet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops) and a patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas), both of which died suddenly in the Szeged Zoo, Szeged, Hungary. Macroscopic lesions in each animal included disseminated, grayish-white foci in the lungs, lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and kidney. All focal lesions were characterized microscopically as purulent to pyogranulomatous to granulomatous inflammation with necrosis. Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica strains were isolated from tissue samples on modified Francis agar after mouse passage and identified by a commerci

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative malignancies which can have differing patterns of behavior and clinical presentation. Unlike Hodgkin's disease, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is much less predictable and has a far greater predilection for disseminating to extranodal sites.
CASE REPORT: We offer a case of a 50 year old Caucasian male who presented with chest pain, and was ultimately diagnosed with follicular lymphoma by means of liver biopsy, in conjunction with immunohistochemistry. This malignancy grew at a rapid rate and over came our patient in a
