Determinants of diagnostic performance of [F-18]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography for axillary staging in breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively investigate determinants of the accuracy of staging axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer using [F-18]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET). METHODS: Patients with primary operable breast cancer underwent FDG PET of the chest followed by sentinel node biopsy (SNB, n = 47) and/or complete axillary lymph node dissection (ALND, n = 23). PET scans were independently interpreted by three observers in a blinded fashion with respect to the FDG avidity of the primary tumor and the axillary status. The results were compared to histopathological analyses

Neural correlates of maternal separation in rhesus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: The neurobiological basis of stress and anxiety in primates remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the neural response to a naturalistic social stressor: maternal separation. We used rhesus monkeys as an animal model because of their close phylogenetic affinity with humans. METHODS: Six juvenile rhesus monkeys received [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scans following 1) a period together with their mothers and again after separation from their mothers 2) with or 3) without visual contact. Image subtraction revealed brain regions that exhibited

Usefulness of [99mTC]MIBI and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose for imaging recurrent medullary thyroid cancer and hyperparathyroidism in MEN 2a syndrome.

We report the case of a MEN 2a patient with a history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) treated by total thyroidectomy, who presented an increasing calcitonin level, suggesting tumor recurrence. Conventional radiographic and radionuclide imaging failed to localize the responsible lesions. A planar and tomographic (SPECT) [99mTc]MIBI scan, performed in order to investigate a recent hyperparathyroidism localized a parathyroid adenoma and revealed an abnormal uptake in the left lateral neck region, corresponding to apparently banal lymph nodes on MRI. This abnormal uptake was also observed on a [

Clinical value of whole-body emission tomography in potentially curable colorectal liver metastases.

AIMS: In selected patients with colorectal liver metastases, hepatic resection offers an opportunity for cure, with a 25-38% 5-year survival rate. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate whether patient selection could be improved with pre-operative whole-body 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) scan. METHODS: Ninety-one consecutive patients were considered to be eligible for liver resection after investigation with conventional diagnostic methods (CDM). In all these patients a whole-body PET scan with FDG was performed prior to surgery. Follow-up was com

Cost-effectiveness of FDG-PET for the management of potentially operable non-small cell lung cancer: priority for a PET-based strategy after nodal-negative CT results.

Decision analysis is used here to establish the most cost-effective strategy for management of potentially operable non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). The strategies compared were conventional staging (strategy A), dedicated systems of positron emission tomography (PET) using fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in patients with normal-sized (strategy B) or in patients with enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes (part of strategy C), and FDG-PET followed by exclusion from surgical procedures when both computed tomography (CT) and PET were positive for mediastinal lymph nodes (strategy D) or when

Differential diagnosis of thymic tumors using a combination of 11C-methionine PET and FDG PET.

UNLABELLED: We assessed the usefulness of PET studies in making a differential diagnosis of thymic tumors by using 11C-methionine (MET) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). METHODS: We examined 31 patients with thymic tumors, including 14 patients with thymic cancer, 9 with invasive thymoma, 5 with noninvasive thymoma and 3 with thymic cysts. The histological diagnosis was confirmed by either surgery or biopsy. MET PET and FDG PET were performed in 28 and 29 patients, respectively. Both the MET and FDG uptakes were evaluated by the standardized uptake value (SUV). RESULTS: MET uptake was not su

Positron emission tomography in children with neurofibromatosis-1.

Neurofibromatosis-1 is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder commonly associated with neuropsychological complications. Focal areas of high signal intensity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans occur commonly but have shown inconsistent correlation with neuropsychological problems. Positron emission tomography (PET) scans utilizing [18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose and MRI studies were performed on 10 children with neurofibromatosis-1 and multiple focal areas of high signal intensity to evaluate the regional cerebral metabolic rate for glucose of these lesions and other central nervous syste

Positron emission tomography and fluorodeoxyglucose studies of metabolic hyperfrontality and psychopathology in the psilocybin model of psychosis.

The effects of the indolehallucinogen psilocybin, a mixed 5-HT2 and 5-HT1 agonist, on regional cerebral glucose metabolism were investigated in 10 healthy volunteers with PET and [F-18]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) prior to and following a 15- or 20-mg dose of psilocybin. Psychotomimetic doses of psilocybin were found to produce a global increase in cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (CMRglu) with significant and most marked increases in the frontomedial and frontolateral cortex (24.3%), anterior cingulate (24.9%), and temporomedial cortex (25.3%). Somewhat smaller increases of CMRglu were found i

Lid opening apraxia is associated with medial frontal hypometabolism.

We used [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose with positron emission tomography to explore the functional basis of lid opening apraxia (LOA). We studied four patients with LOA without associated pyramidal or extrapyramidal motor dysfunction (mean age 65.5 +/- 4.7 years). We compared measures of glucose metabolism with those calculated for 10 age-matched normal volunteers (mean age 60.6 +/- 11.4). All four patients demonstrated significant metabolic reductions (> 2 SD) in the medial frontal lobe: bilaterally in two, unilaterally in two. Significant abnormal unilateral metabolic reductions in the left basal g

Positron emission tomography with fluorine-18-deoxyglucose in the detection and staging of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of patients with breast cancer is being treated with preoperative chemotherapy. Evaluation of treatment response may be facilitated by positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG). This noninvasive technique may allow prediction of the chemotherapy outcome in an early phase of the treatment. METHODS: Prerequisites for treatment monitoring with PET are good FDG uptake in the tumor, high specificity, and a reliable quantification technique. These factors were studied in 20 patients with primary breast cancer, lymph node metastases,

Cerebellar and brainstem hypometabolism in olivopontocerebellar atrophy detected with positron emission tomography.

We studied local cerebral metabolic rates for glucose (1CMRglc) with 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose and positron emission tomography (PET) in 30 patients with olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) and 30 age-matched control subjects without neurological disease. The diagnosis of OPCA was based on the history and physical findings and on the exclusion of other causes of cerebellar ataxia by means of laboratory investigations. Computed tomographic scans revealed some degree of atrophy of the cerebellum in most patients with OPCA, and many also had atrophy of the brainstem. PET studies in these pat

PET, CT, and MR imaging in cerebrovascular disease.

Forty-five patients with cerebrovascular disease (single and multiple infarcts, intracerebral hemorrhages) were examined with X-ray CT, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and positron emission tomography (PET). In six patients with acute infarcts repeat measurements with all techniques were performed after 2 weeks. Magnetic resonance and PET were more sensitive in the detection of ischemic lesions than X-ray CT. With PET, functional disturbances could be demonstrated even in two cases where CT and MR were normal, while the latter techniques were superior in exactly localizing a lesion. Changes i

Assessment of data-driven gating for cardiac motion extraction and LVEF estimation from routine [18F]FDG LAFOV PET.

Objective.Chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity can lead to irreversible heart failure. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is routinely monitored during treatment, but conventional assessment requires dedicated cardiac imaging and clinical resources. This study evaluated a deviceless data-driven gating (DDG) framework for extracting cardiac motion from routine [18F] FDG positron emission tomography (PET) emission data and, secondary, assessed its feasibility for LVEF estimation.Approach.The DDG framework is based on histo images and uses anatomical masking for frequency-domain filtering t

Active Brown Adipose Tissue Is Associated With Reduced Arterial Inflammation and Less Atherogenic Circulating Factors in Individuals With Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence from preclinical models has linked the actions of brown adipose tissue (BAT) with protection against atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, in part due to its salutary effects on systemic lipid composition. However, human data on the role of BAT in atherosclerosis are scarce. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we examined 65 individuals with obesity and analyzed cold-induced BAT activity and vascular inflammation in the aorta using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography in combination with systemic lipido

High FDG Uptake in the Non-cancerous Lung Predicts Immune-Related Adverse Events and Poor Prognosis in Patients with Lung Cancer Treated with Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved survival in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, predicting immune-related adverse events (irAEs) remains a clinical challenge. We previously showed that high 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake in the non-cancerous lung (NCL) on PET/CT is associated with the risk of interstitial lung disease. This study further investigated whether NCL FDG uptake predicts the risk of irAEs, including both ILD and non-ILD events, as well as survival outcomes in patients with lung cancer receiving ICIs. MATERIALS AND METHOD

18 F-FDG PET/CT Demonstrates Significant Response in Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma Treated With Combined Immunotherapy and Targeted Therapy.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare but highly aggressive malignancy with a dismal prognosis and limited responsiveness to conventional therapies. Recent advances in targeted therapy and immunotherapy have shown promise in improving outcomes. 18 F-FDG PET/CT serves as a valuable tool for evaluating disease extent and monitoring therapeutic response in ATC. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman diagnosed with biopsy-proven anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, presenting with extensive locoregional disease and pulmonary metastases on Pembrolizumab and Lenvatinib. 18 F-FDG PET/CT was done

PRognostic and predictive potential Of multiparametric dynamic whole-body 18F-FDG PET Imaging using a Long axial field-of-view (LAFOV) system for FIRST-line chemo-immunotherapy efficacy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer: PROFIL-1 study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Revolution of chemo-immunotherapy (CT-IO) in the first-line treatment of metastatic non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLC) without actionable genomic alterations (AGAs) has dramatically improved prognosis, providing long response in a subset of patients. Due to the highly heterogeneous nature of the disease, most of patients do not show long term benefit. Long axial field of view positron emission tomography (LAFOV-PET) scanner is a new emerging system allowing dynamic whole-body imaging with higher sensitivity, representing unique opportunity for oncological applications.
