The clinical and radiological results of femoral shaft fractures in childhood were evaluated and compared in relation to different treatment modalities. One hundred and one children (mean age 5+/-0,4 years) were treated between 1990 to 1999. 38% of the patients were treated conservatively (mean age 2,2+/-0,5 years), 32% of the patients (mean age 6+/-0,5 years) were treated by external fixation, 17% were treated with elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN, mean age 5,6+/-0,8 years) and 12% underwent other internal fixation procedures. The duration of hospital stay was significantly longer

BACKGROUND/AIM: The emergence of shared stand-up electric scooters has led to an increase in their usage and, subsequently, an increase in the incidence of maxillofacial trauma. This study aimed to investigate the trauma pattern associated with the use of stand-up electric scooters compared with that related to the use of bicycles, which was a popular mode of personal mobility before the emergence of stand-up electric scooters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study investigated the medical records of patients who visited Wonju Christian Hospital for maxillofacial trauma due to the use of stand-up

Terrible triad injuries of the elbow are complex injuries which can result in long term complications and significant disability. They must be identified correctly, and managed appropriately in order to maximise functional outcomes. A clear understanding of the bony and ligamentous anatomy is essential to plan appropriate surgical reconstruction to provide elbow stability. Urgent reduction of the elbow, followed by 3-dimensional imaging and surgical repair or replacement of the injured structures is the mainstay of treatment in the majority of cases. This review presents a summary of the relev

OBJECTIVE: Posterior pelvic ring sacroiliac screws are preferred by clinicians for their good biomechanical performance. However, there are few studies on mechanical analysis and intraoperative screw insertion of the dysplastic sacrum and sacroiliac screw. This study investigated the biomechanical performance of oblique sacroiliac screws (OSS) in S1 combined with transiliac-transsacral screws (TTSs) in S2 for pelvic fracture or sacroiliac dislocation with dysplastic sacrum and evaluated the safety of screw placement assisted by the navigation template.
METHODS: Six models were established, in

Treatment of the terrible triad injury of the elbow remains a difficult problem. There are several ways to treat the radial head and coronoid fractures; controversy still exists regarding the best way to treat each. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the clinical outcomes of radial head and coronoid fractures treated using current protocols. No differences in functional outcomes were found between the different surgical techniques. There is no superior current protocol for treating these injuries. Surgical treatment should be dictated by fracture type and surgeon experience. [Ort

Several techniques are used for fixation of Bennett's fractures. The aim of this study was to assess a technique of arthroscopic-assisted reduction and percutaneous cannulated screw fixation of Bennett's fractures. Seven patients (mean age 29 years) with three fractures Type I and four fractures Type II according to Gedda were operated under arthroscopic lavage, fluoroscopic screw fixation, and arthroscopic control of the joint reduction. Arthroscopy, showed satisfactory joint reduction in all cases. At 4.5 months, the mean pain score was 1 (0-4), QuickDASH 15 (0-61), and Kapandji score 9 (5-1

Unfortunately, the literature has little guidance for revision elbow surgery. This article attempts to supplement what is known in the literature with the author's anecdotal experience. With this article, it is the author's hope that the reader may learn from his or her successes and his or her failures without having to discover them first hand. There is good reason for angst to overcome surgeons looking at radiographs depicting a traumatized proximal ulna or radius. Surgeons know that there is a good chance they will be seeing these patients for a long time.

Body fractures of the tarsal navicular are relatively uncommon. To date, there is little literature discussing a navicular body fracture with dorsal subluxation of the first and second cuneiforms over the navicular. This case study presents a 30-year-old patient with this injury. He underwent open reduction internal fixation of the navicular body fracture successfully but failed adequate reduction of the navicular cuneiform joint after ligamentous reconstruction. After revisional surgery, he also failed 6 weeks of percutanous pinning with Kirschner-wire fixation. When comparing the literature

Stress fractures of the olecranon caused by repetitive stress force have infrequently been reported as a cause of elbow pain in adult athletes, engaged in throwing and pitching sports. We diagnosed as a stress fracture of the olecranon by clinical and radiographic findings and treated surgically. The patient returned to playing baseball at a competitive level and was asymptomatic 4 months after the first operation. However, the patient re-injured the olecranon and a second surgical treatment was performed almost 1 year after the first operation. After the second surgery, the patient returned t

This study was intended to enhance the diagnostic vigilance of immobilization osteoporosis with fracture and explore its prevention and treatment. Thirteen children with the hip disease underwent one to nine months of plaster cast after operation. A retrospective analysis was made on these 13 patients with fracture and immobilization osteoporosis. The result showed that disuse fracture occurred in fifteen places of their femora. All of these cases were cured by non-operative and drug treatment. These data suggest that for the cases of immobilization osteoporosis it is important to prevent frac

This study evaluated the reliability of plain radiography versus computed tomography (CT) for the measurement of small (< 5 mm) intra-articular displacements of distal radius fracture fragments. The plain radiographs and CT scans of 19 acute intra-articular distal radius fractures were used by 5 independent observers, using 2 standardized techniques, to quantify incongruity of the articular surface in a blinded and randomized fashion. Repeat measurements were performed by the same observers 2-4 weeks later, allowing determination of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) as a measure of int

Bilateral mandibular fracture contributing to airway obstruction is a well-understood phenomenon. This is typically described as a rather immediate or acute process. After trauma, the production of a "flail mandible" with concomitant loss of support of tongue muscles is thought to result in obstruction of the upper airway. An unusual case in which the bilateral mandibular fractures contributed to an airway obstruction 10 days after the initial trauma is described. The cause is explained and methods of prevention and treatment are presented.

The results of 42 patients with displaced proximal humeral fractures treated by conservative methods were reviewed. Follow-up evaluation included clinical and radiographic examination median two years after the trauma. The results were assessed using Neer's protocol. The patients were asked to assess the results. The patients assessed the results better than the Neer score (p < 0.001). The patients' response to non-operative treatment was satisfactory. It is concluded that the Neer classification of the results underestimates the degree of satisfaction achieved by the patients. It is concluded

A rare case of a fracture through the neck of the talus with a trimalleolar ankle fracture and ruptured tibialis posterior tendon is presented and the literature reviewed. Management consisted of open-reduction internal fixation of the fractures and repair of the tibialis posterior tendon. At 40 months after injury, the patient had tibiotalar range of motion at 5 degrees of dorsiflexion and 38 degrees of plantar flexion. While avascular necrosis of the talus did not occur, significant degenerative arthritis of the ankle was noted.
