Role of CD14 in responses to clinical isolates of Escherichia coli: effects of K1 capsule expression.

Severe bacterial infections leading to sepsis or septic shock can be induced by bacteria that utilize different factors to drive pathogenicity and/or virulence, leading to disease in the host. One major factor expressed by all clinical isolates of gram-negative bacteria is lipopolysaccharide (LPS); a second factor expressed by some Escherichia coli strains is a K1 polysaccharide capsule. To determine the role of the CD14 LPS receptor in the pathogenic effects of naturally occurring E. coli, the responses of CD14-/- and CD14+/+ mice to three different isolates of E. coli obtained from sepsis pa

Concepts of the chemical structure of lipid A.

Lipid A represents the covalently bound lipid component of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), the endotoxins and O antigens of gram-negative bacteria. Lipid A's of endotoxically active LPS consist of a beta(1'----6)-linked D-glucosamine disaccharide that carries phosphoryl groups in positions 1 and 4'. Depending on the origin of lipid A, nonacylated, nitrogen-containing residues may be bound to these phosphoryl groups. As shown in enterobacterial lipid A's, available hydroxyl groups of the D-glucosamine disaccharide are substituted by 3-deoxy-D-mannooctulosonic acid (position 6'), (R)-3-hydroxytetrade

[Vascular manifestations due to Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus infection: report of two cases].

INTRODUCTION: Campylobacter fetus is a rare Gram-negative bacteria affecting especially elderly and immunocompromised patients, and that is responsible of vascular and cutaneous involvement. OBSERVATIONS: We report two cases of C. fetus infection in two diabetic male patients, aged 75 and 85 years. The first patient was admitted for chronic fever. First-line examinations were inconclusive. Combined positron emission tomography and computed imaging tomography (PET-CT) diagnosed an infection of a previously operated popliteal aneurysm. The patient underwent surgery, and per-operative samples we

Prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria having extended-spectrum β-lactamase phenotypes in polluted irrigation-purpose wastewaters from Indian agro-ecosystems.

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria has emerged as a serious public health threat worldwide. Aquatic environments including irrigation-purpose wastewaters facilitate the emergence and transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes leading to detrimental effects on human health and environment sustainability. Considering the paramount threat of ever-increasing antibiotic resistance to human health, there is an urgent need for continuous environmental monitoring of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater being used for irrigation i

Exploring northeast India's culturable soil Actinomycetia for potent antibacterial agents against gram-positive bacterial pathogens of clinical importance.

This study investigated the isolation and bioactivity of Actinomycetia from the soil of Northeast India, a region rich in microbial diversity. A total of 187 presumptive Actinomycetia isolates were obtained and 53 were found to exhibit antimicrobial properties. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the isolates were predominantly from the genus Streptomyces. Among these, the strain Streptomyces sp. NP14 (ANP14ARS) demonstrated specific and significant antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacterial pathogens. The strain was further assayed against a pane…

E. hirae Causing Biliary Tract Infection in a Patient with Cholangiocarcinoma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: E. faecium and E. faecalis are the common species of Enterococcus responsible for the majority of infections. Earlier, species other than the common ones were usually unidentified and reported as Enterococcus species. However, modern equipment, like MALDI-TOF and VITEK2, have been utilitarian, helping us to identify the previously unidentified species. E. hirae is an organism seldom reported to cause human infections. Here, we report a case of a biliary tract infection in a female patient with cholangiocarcinoma caused by E. hirae. CASE: A 56-year-old female presented with fever

Reactive oxygen species and the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of isoconazole nitrate.

Bacterial superinfections often occur in dermatomycoses, resulting in greatly inflamed or eczematous skin. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of isoconazole nitrate (ISN), a broad-spectrum antimicrobial imidazole, commonly used to treat dermatomycoses. Several gram-positive bacteria minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for ISN (ISN solution or ISN-containing creams: Travogen or corticosteroid-containing Travocort) and ampicillin were obtained using the broth-dilution method. Speed of onset of the bactericidal effect was determined with bacterial killing …

Development and use of competitive PCR assays for the rumen cellulolytic bacteria: Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus albus and Ruminococcus flavefaciens.

Competitive PCR assays were developed for the enumeration of the rumen cellulolytic bacterial species: Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus albus and Ruminococcus flavefaciens. The assays, targeting species-specific regions of 16S rDNA, were evaluated using DNA from pure culture and rumen digesta spiked with the relevant cellulolytic species. Minimum detection levels for F. succinogenes, R. albus and R. flavefaciens were 1-10 cells in pure culture and 10(3-4) cells per ml in mixed culture. The assays were reproducible and 11-13% inter- and intra-assay variations were observed. Enumeration of
