Isodicentric chromosomes are considered the most common structural abnormality of the human Y chromosome. Because of their instability during cell division, loss of an isodicentric Y seems mainly to lie at the origin of mosaicism in previously reported patients with a 45,X cell line. Here, we report on a similar case, which, however, turned out to be an example of dynamic mosaicism involving isodicentric chromosome Y and isochromosome Y after FISH with a set of chromosome Y-specific probes and multicolor banding. Cytogenetic analyses (GTG-, C-, and Q-banding) have shown three different cell li

A 10-year-old boy presented with generalized hyperpigmentation, abdominal pain, change in behavior and, no weight gain for 2 years. On examination, he had hypotension and generalized hyperpigmentation that was more marked on gingival mucosa and frictional sites. Serum cortisol was markedly decreased and his CT scan abdomen showed adrenal atrophy. On the basis of clinical and laboratory findings, a diagnosis of Addison disease was made.

Panic disorder is a major cause of medical attention with substantial social and health service cost. Based on pharmacological studies, research on its etiopathogenesis has been focused on the possible dysfunction of specific neurotransmitter systems. However, recent work has related the genes involved in development, synaptic plasticity and synaptic remodeling to anxiety disorders. This implies that learning processes and changes in perception, interpretation and behavioral responses to environmental stimuli are essential for development of complex anxiety responses secondary to the building

Spontaneous bilateral lens dislocation with subcapsular and cortical cataract was found in a 17-year-old boy with Seckel syndrome. No other identifiable cause of lens dislocation was noted.

In 1983, Fine and Lubinsky reported a single patient with craniofacial anomalies, hearing loss, cataracts, microstomia, CNS anomalies, and developmental delay. Since that time, three additional patients with similar findings have been described. In each case the patients was the only affected child in his or her family. Here we describe the first brother and sister sibling pair with features suggestive of Fine-Lubinsky syndrome. Features present in one or both of our patients, and the majority of previously described individuals with Fine-Lubinsky syndrome, include: craniosynostosis/abnormal c

BACKGROUND: Deletion 18p is a frequent deletion syndrome characterized by dysmorphic features, growth deficiencies, and mental retardation with a poorer verbal performance. Until now, five families have been described with limited clinical description. We report transmission of deletion 18p from a mother to her two daughters and review the previous cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: The proband is 12 years old and has short stature, dysmorphic features and moderate mental retardation. Her sister is 9 years old and also has short stature and similar dysmorphic features. Her cognitive performance is wit

UNLABELLED: About 50% of intersex cases are due to male pseudohermaphroditism, and of these cases, 50% are not clarified aetiologically. The association of idiopathic male pseudohermaphroditism and prenatal growth retardation has been recently reported. The aim of this study was to verify whether there was a difference in weight and/or length at birth between idiopathic and non-idiopathic male pseudohermaphroditism patients. A total of 70 patients with male pseudohermaphroditism were recruited; 35 non-idiopathic and 35 idiopathic. Birth weight and length were converted to z scores, and the sev

We report a male patient with short bowel syndrome (SBS) and renal focal tubulointerstitial fibrosis (FTIF). Seven years after surgery, he was introduced to us due to severe undernutrition, an impairment of growth hormone (GH) secretion, and abnormally low levels of plasma citrulline and arginine at 11 years 7 months of age, just before nutritional support using total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was begun. Thereafter, the support was changed to home TPN with GH supplementation. After an improvement of the disorders, GH was stopped at 17 years 3 months of age. However, hyperuricemia appeared and

Despite the clinical importance of delayed puberty, the understanding of this condition is hampered by the lack of studies evaluating etiologies and predisposing factors among large case series. We performed a retrospective study of clinical and laboratory data from adolescents (< or =18 yr of age) with delayed puberty who had been seen in our clinic between 1/96 and 7/99 (n = 232 subjects; 158 males and 74 females). Family histories of pubertal timing among primary relatives were classified as negative, having at least a tendency to pubertal delay (development > or =1 SD beyond the mean), or

In this article, we describe two sibs, a brother and sister, with severe mental retardation and multiple congenital anomalies including "coarse" facial features, short stature, seizures, hypertrichosis, short great toes, and overbreathing. Comparison of these patients with previous reports suggests that they could represent the first familial cases of the Pitt-Hopkins syndrome. The recurrence in sibs within the same family supports autosomal recessive inheritance for the condition. Variable expression of the respiratory symptoms, which has not been reported earlier, is underlined.

A case of prenatal diagnosis of an overgrowth syndrome at 30 weeks of gestation is reported. The diagnosis was suggested on the basis of increased fetal growth from 16 weeks onwards, advanced bone age, and characteristic facial features such as hypertelorism, broad forehead and small chin. The fetus presented at 12 weeks with a markedly increased nuchal translucency thickness and generalized skin edema, but normal karyotype. Serial ultrasound scans revealed brain abnormalities including mild unilateral ventriculomegaly and a cyst in the cavum septi pellucidi. The pregnancy was terminated at th

BACKGROUND: Weill-Marchesani syndrome is a rare condition with ocular and systemic manifestations. Common ocular signs are microspherophakia, ectopia lentis, and secondary glaucoma. The glaucoma is usually treatable through medical or surgical management. The most-common arteriovenous malformation (AVM) with ocular effects is the carotid-cavernous sinus fistula. It is very uncommon to observe ocular complications from an AVM in the area of the straight sinus and vein of Galen. AVMs in any location are unusual with Weill-Marchesani syndrome.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of severe asymmetric

Obesity is a common feature of pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) type 1a, but is usually associated with short stature. We describe two children referred because of hyperphagia and excessive weight gain from early infancy. Tall stature in both children initially confounded the diagnosis of PHP, but on follow-up both children developed the typical hormonal abnormalities and Case 2 developed typical skeletal features of Albright hereditary osteodystrophy. PHP type 1a is caused by germline loss of function mutations in the alpha subunit of GS, the ubiquitously expressed G protein that couples many h

We describe the clinical findings and natural history in two unrelated deeply mentally retarded females, now 28 and 20 years old respectively. Both presented prenatal growth retardation and severe postnatal growth retardation. Their craniofacial appearance is distinct with nasal hypoplasia, triangular mouth and thin lips. Both have a cleft palate and a retinal coloboma at the right eye. Motor development is below the age of 1 year with a complex neurological syndrome with axial hypotonia and spastic quadriplegia.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports three children with short stature: developmental coxa vara unilateral in the first case and bilateral in the other two; somewhat squared and "ovoid" vertebral bodies in the first patient, and normal to slightly tall vertebral bodies in the third; metaphyseal changes in some long tubular bones including bone fragments similar to the corner fractures seen in child abuse in all three patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first and second patients were sisters; their mother, also quite short, had surgical procedures in early life for bilateral "coxa vara"; their brot
