Increased Abundance of Cytotoxic T Cells in Synovial Fluid of a Dog With Erosive Immune-Mediated Polyarthritis.

Most dogs with nonerosive immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA) have neutrophilic inflammation in the synovial fluid. On the other hand, some dogs with erosive IMPA have increased mononuclear cells as the most abundant cell subset in the synovial fluid. A 9-year-old, neutered female miniature dachshund presented with lameness and lethargy. Physical examination revealed subluxation of the carpal and tarsal joints. Synovial fluid tests revealed an increased number of leukocytes, mainly mononuclear cells, and radiographic examination led to a diagnosis of erosive IMPA. Compared with nonerosive IMP

Inveterate Section of Deep Flexor in Pediatric Hand, Periosteum Clues.

Diagnostic delay in flexor tendon injuries is common in pediatric patients, and age influences both recovery and postoperative management. We report the case of a three-year-old girl who presented with the inability to flex the distal interphalangeal joint of the left third finger, two months after the digit became entrapped in a chair. Ultrasonography revealed cortical ossification of the middle phalanx compressing the flexor tendon, without clear evidence of discontinuity. Surgical exploration was undertaken due to a strong clinical suspicion of flexor digitorum profundus rupture, revealing

Neck of the 5th metacarpal head retrograde screwing with a headless screw after a recurrent fracture on osteosynthesis pins: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: This paper reports the technique we used to treat a recurrent fracture of the neck of the 5th metacarpal with bending of the pin that was still present in the patient bone. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old soldier presents to the emergency department following a direct trauma on the right hand. This patient had already presented a similar trauma one year ago with a fracture of the 5th metacarpal neck treated by intramedullary pins according to Foucher technique's. X-rays showed a recurrent fracture of the 5th metacarpal neck with pins bended. It was decided to rem

Potential Compounds as Inhibitors of Staphylococcal Virulence Factors Involved in the Development of Thrombosis.

For many years, staphylococci have been detected mainly in infections of the skin and soft tissues, organs, bone inflammations, and generalized infections. Thromboembolic diseases have also become a serious plague of our times, which, as it turns out, are closely related to the toxic effects of staphylococci. Staphylococcus aureus, because of the presence of many different kinds of virulence factors, is capable of manipulating the host's innate and adaptive immune responses. These include toxins and cofactors that activate host zymogens and exoenzymes, as well as superantigens, which are highl

Pediatric Erythroid Sarcoma Diagnostically Confirmed by Identification of a Recurrent NFIA::CBFA2T3 Fusion.

Erythroid sarcoma (ES) is exceedingly rare in the pediatric population with only a handful of reports of de novo cases, mostly occurring in the central nervous system (CNS) or orbit. It is clinically and pathologically challenging and can masquerade as a nonhematopoietic small round blue cell tumor. Clinical presentation of ES without bone marrow involvement makes diagnosis particularly difficult. We describe a 22-month-old female with ES who presented with a 2-cm mass involving the left parotid region and CNS. The presence of crush/fixation artifact from the initial biopsy made definitive cla

Prenatal Clinical Presentation and Genetic Analysis of Partial Trisomy 12: A Case Report.

Trisomy 12 is a rare chromosomal abnormality characterized by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 12 in some or all cells. This condition can present with a variety of phenotypic manifestations, depending on the extent of mosaicism and the specific genes involved. Prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 12 is challenging due to its variable presentation and potential overlap with other chromosomal abnormalities. This case report describes a 23-year-old woman referred to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) clinic following abnormal findings on a routine prenatal ultrasound at 20 weeks' gestation. The

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma presenting with bilateral hydronephrosis and renal insufficiency: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely rare tumor with nonspecific clinical manifestations, making diagnosis challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case of MPM with occult onset presenting with bilateral hydronephrosis and renal insufficiency. A 30-year-old man was admitted to the Urology Department because of recurrent bilateral lower back pain. The etiology was unclear after a series of laboratory tests, imaging examinations, bone marrow aspiration, renal puncture biopsy, ascites examination, ureteroscopy, and so on. Finally, MPM was diagnosed by

A novel variant in BMPR1B causes acromesomelic dysplasia Grebe type in a consanguineous Moroccan family: Expanding the phenotypic and mutational spectrum of acromesomelic dysplasias.

Acromesomelic dysplasia Grebe type (AMD Grebe type) is an autosomal recessive trait characterized by short stature, shortened limbs and malformations of the hands and feet. It is caused by variants in the growth differentiation factor 5 (GDF5) or, in rare cases, its receptor, the bone morphogenetic protein receptor-1B (BMPR1B). Here, we report a novel homozygous BMPR1B variant causing AMD Grebe type in a consanguineous Moroccan family with two affected sibs from BRO Biobank. Remarkably, the affected individuals showed additional features including bilateral simian creases, lumbar hyperlordosis

NovoSorb Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix for Reconstruction of Multiplanar Degloving Injury of the Upper Limb.

Originally described as "wringer injuries" by MacCollum in 1938,1 traumatic multiplanar degloving injuries that occur as the result of the hand, forearm or arm being drawn between the rollers of a machine are functionally devastating and present a significant reconstructive challenge. Revascularization and comprehensive excision of devitalized bone and soft tissue, followed by appropriate skeletal fixation and vascularized soft tissue cover are the mainstays of management. To date, published case series have described local flaps and free tissue transfer for coverage of wounds that involve exp

Causal effects of tea intake on multiple types of fractures: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Fracture is a global public health disease. Bone health and fracture risk have become the focus of public and scientific attention. Observational studies have reported that tea consumption is associated with fracture risk, but the results are inconsistent. The present study used 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. The inverse variance weighted method, employing genetic data from UK Biobank (447,485 cases) of tea intake and UK Biobank (Genome-wide association study Round 2) project (361,194 cases) of fractures, was performed to estimate the causal relationship between tea intake and

Progress in bioprinting technology for tissue regeneration.

In recent years, due to the increase in diseases that require organ/tissue transplantation and the limited donor, on the other hand, patients have lost hope of recovery and organ transplantation. Regenerative medicine is one of the new sciences that promises a bright future for these patients by providing solutions to repair, improve function, and replace tissue. One of the technologies used in regenerative medicine is three-dimensional (3D) bioprinters. Bioprinting is a new strategy that is the basis for starting a global revolution in the field of medical sciences and has attracted much atte

Various Flexible Fixation Techniques Using Suture Button for Ligamentous Lisfranc Injuries: A Review of Surgical Options.

Contrary to Lisfranc joint fracture-dislocation, ligamentous Lisfranc injury can lead to additional instability and arthritis and is difficult to diagnose. Appropriate procedure selection is necessary for a better prognosis. Several surgical methods have recently been introduced. Here, we present three distinct surgical techniques for treating ligamentous Lisfranc employing flexible fixation. First is the "Single Tightrope procedure", which involves reduction and fixation between the second metatarsal base and the medial cuneiform via making a bone tunnel and inserting Tightrope. Second is the

Monoclonal Gammopathies and the Bone Marrow Microenvironment: From Bench to Bedside and Then Back Again.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable hematologic malignancy characterized by a multistep evolutionary pathway, with an initial phase called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), potentially evolving into the symptomatic disease, often preceded by an intermediate phase called "smoldering" MM (sMM). From a biological point of view, genomic alterations (translocations/deletions/mutations) are already present at the MGUS phase, thus rendering their role in disease evolution questionable. On the other hand, we currently know that changes in the bone marrow microenvironment (TM

Preclinical safety evaluation of a bivalent inactivated EV71-CA16 vaccine in mice immunized intradermally.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common acute viral infectious disease that poses a serious threat to the life and health of young children. With the development of an effective inactivated EV71 vaccine, CA16 has become the main pathogen causing HFMD. Effective and safe vaccines against this disease are urgently needed. In our previous study, a bivalent inactivated vaccine was shown to have good immunogenicity and to induce neutralizing antibodies in mice and monkeys. Repeated administration toxicity is a critical safety test in the preclinical evaluation of vaccines. In this study, BALB/c mi

Postoperative Imaging of the Wrist and Hand.

In this article we will do an overview of the general and specific complications that occur after the most common wrist and hand surgeries. Knowledge of the different surgical techniques is essential for postoperative imaging evaluation. General complications include infection, complex regional pain syndrome, problems related with the surgical approach (open or arthroscopic) and bone healing problems. The most frequent fractures of the wrist with specific complications are distal radius fractures and scaphoid fractures as associated with tendon ruptures secondary to friction, nonunion or secon

Iron homeostasis and organismal aging.

Iron is indispensable for normal body functions across species because of its critical roles in red blood cell function and many essential proteins and enzymes required for numerous physiological processes. Regulation of iron homeostasis is an intricate process involving multiple modulators at the systemic, cellular, and molecular levels. Interestingly, emerging evidence has demonstrated that many modulators of iron homeostasis contribute to organismal aging and longevity. On the other hand, the age-related dysregulation of iron homeostasis is often associated with multiple age-related patholo

Design of an integrated model for diagnosis and classification of pediatric acute leukemia using machine learning.

Applying artificial intelligence techniques for diagnosing diseases in hospitals often provides advanced medical services to patients such as the diagnosis of leukemia. On the other hand, surgery and bone marrow sampling, especially in the diagnosis of childhood leukemia, are even more complex and difficult, resulting in increased human error and procedure time decreased patient satisfaction and increased costs. This study investigates the use of neuro-fuzzy and group method of data handling, for the diagnosis of acute leukemia in children based on the complete blood count test. Furthermore, a
