Tdap: the need to educate and immunize.

The resurgence of pertussis is puzzling, especially given the requirement that children complete recommended immunizations prior to school entry. Are adult carriers unknowingly infecting children? What do adult caregivers know about pertussis and the tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) booster vaccine? How can the incidence of pertussis in children younger than 2 years, a group most at risk for complications of the disease, be reduced? This article examines the incidence of pertussis and strategies to reduce pertussis incidence in the United States. If the need for Tdap vaccine

Genetic counselling in parents of children with congenital heart disease significantly improves knowledge about causation and enhances psychosocial functioning.

BACKGROUND: One of the key questions asked by parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) is 'why' and 'how did this happen?'. Receiving more information in response to these questions is therefore important to parents. This study sought to assess the efficacy of individualised genetic counselling sessions in improving knowledge of causation and psychosocial functioning in parents of children with CHD. METHODS: Parents of children undergoing surgery for CHD were offered individualised genetic counselling during their child's hospital admission. Assessments occurred at three time-p

Breast cancer and mammography: knowledge, attitudes, practices and patient satisfaction post-mammography at the San Fernando General Hospital, Trinidad.

Self-administered questionnaires were completed by 314 Trinidadian women, 40 years and older, to ascertain their breast cancer knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Those with higher education had greater knowledge of the benefits of early breast cancer detection (p < .01) and knew that an abnormal mammography result (p = .01) or recall (p < .01) was not necessarily indicative of breast cancer. Inaccurate beliefs particularly that breast compression causes cancer were more likely among those with the least education (p = .04). Obesity and alcohol were identified as risk factors by 29.3% a

Comparison of underlying factors behind parental refusal or consent for lumbar puncture.

BACKGROUND: Although lumbar puncture (LP) is a safe procedure in experienced hands, some parents fear having it performed on their children and refuse consent. The factors associated with this refusal are unclear, and any differences with consenting parents might provide clues as to how to address them. Therefore, we compared the underlying factors between the parents who refuse and those who consent to this procedure, as well as their children's outcomes. METHODS: A prospective study of the two groups of parents was conducted by a face-to-face structured interview. Parents' demographic facto

Wildlife disease and risk perception.

Risk perception has an important influence on wildlife management and is particularly relevant to issues that present health risks, such as those associated with wildlife disease management. Knowledge of risk perceptions is useful to wildlife health professionals in developing communication messages that enhance public understanding of wildlife disease risks and that aim to increase public support for disease management. To promote knowledge of public understanding of disease risks in the context of wildlife disease management, we used a self-administered questionnaire mailed to a stratified r

Knowledge of HIV transmission through breast milk among drug-dependent pregnant women.

Abstract The current study examined the correlates of knowledge about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission through breast milk among drug-dependent pregnant women. There is a tremendous need to examine the knowledge about HIV transmission through breastfeeding among this largely understudied, but high-risk subset of pregnant women in order to minimize the extent to which they pass HIV to their children after giving birth. Participants included 97 pregnant women from Baltimore, MD, USA. Prevalence of drug use over the last 6 months included 37.1% reporting smoking marijuana, 36.1% in

[Correlations among disease perceptions, attitudes and self-care behaviors in patients with interstitial cystitis].

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is an enigmatic disease that currently remains incurable. Failure to adopt positive self-care behaviors can exacerbate recurrent clinical symptoms and significantly affect a patient's capacity to function normally in work, family and social setting. Proper disease perception can improve patient attitudes toward disease management and positively influence behavior. PURPOSE: This study investigated correlations between disease perceptions, attitudes and self-care behaviors in patients with interstitial cystitis. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional

Bullying Borrelia: when the culture of science is under attack.

Although Lyme disease responds to short courses of antibiotics, tick-borne Borrelia burgdorferi has been advanced by some as a frequent explanation for medically unexplained symptoms such as continual fatigue, musculoskeletal pains, and subjective neurocognitive dysfunction. Often called "chronic Lyme disease" by adherents of this philosophy, it is loosely defined, and practitioners liberally prescribe nostrums, including prolonged antimicrobial therapies, in a belief that this eradicates suspected infection. Perhaps due to the lack of supportive data, proponents of this theory have developed

Students' inductive reasoning skills and the relevance of prior knowledge: an exploratory study with a computer-based training course on the topic of acne vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: The importance of inductive instruction in medical education is increasingly growing. Little is known about the relevance of prior knowledge regarding students' inductive reasoning abilities. PURPOSE: The purpose is to evaluate this inductive teaching method as a means of fostering higher levels of learning and to explore how individual differences in prior knowledge (high [HPK] vs. low [LPK]) contribute to students' inductive reasoning skills. METHODS: Twenty-six LPK and 18 HPK students could train twice with an interactive computer-based training object to discover the underlyi
