Prevalence and Association of Perianal and Intra-Anal Warts with Composite High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions Among Gay and Bisexual Men: Baseline Data from the Study of the Prevention of Anal Cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes anal warts and anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A higher incidence of anal cancer has been found among individuals previously diagnosed with anogenital warts. We aimed to investigate the association between anal warts and the presumed anal SCC precursor high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), among participants in the Study of the Prevention of Anal Cancer (SPANC). SPANC was a longitudinal study of anal HPV infections and related lesions among gay and bisexual men (GBM) age 35 years and older, in Sydney, Australia. Anal cytology and high-resoluti

HIV-Related Stigma Among Healthcare Providers in Different Healthcare Settings: A Cross-Sectional Study in Kerman, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Stigmatizing attitudes among healthcare providers are an important barrier to accessing services among people living with HIV (PLHIV). This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the status and correlates of HIV-related stigma among healthcare providers in Kerman, Iran. METHODS: Using a validated and pilot-tested stigma scale questionnaire, we measured HIV-related stigma among 400 healthcare providers recruited from three teaching hospitals (n=363), private sectors (n=28), and the only voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) center (n=9) in Kerman city. Data were gathered using self

The HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Cascade at NYC Sexual Health Clinics: Navigation Is the Key to Uptake.

BACKGROUND: Clinics providing sexual health care pose unique opportunities to implement HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programs. The PrEP program at New York City's Sexual Health Clinics provides intensive on-site navigation for linkage to PrEP care. We assessed uptake of this intervention. METHODS: We categorized men who have sex with men (MSM) without HIV hierarchically as having had (1) HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) use (past year); or (2) selected sexually transmitted infections (STI) (past year); or (3) HIV-diagnosed sex/needle-sharing partners (past 6 months); or (4) expresse

Molecular screening in a longitudinal cohort of young men who have sex with men and young transgender women: associations with focus on the emerging sexually transmitted pathogen Mycoplasma genitalium.

OBJECTIVES: This investigation sought to characterise risk factors associated with acquisition of traditional and emerging agents of sexually transmitted infection (STI) in a cohort of young men who have sex with men and transgender women. METHODS: 917 participants provided urine and rectal swab submissions assessed by transcription-mediated amplification (TMA)-based assays for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae and by off-label TMA-based Trichomonas vaginalis and Mycoplasma genitalium testing. A subset provided specimens at 6-month and 12-month follow-up visits. RESULTS: Preval

Preexposure prophylaxis for men who have sex with men in the Netherlands: impact on HIV and Neisseria gonorrhoeae transmission and cost-effectiveness.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of a preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programme for high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM), which includes gonorrhoea testing and treatment, on the transmission of HIV and Neisseria among MSM in the Netherlands and the cost-effectiveness of such programme with and without risk compensation (in the form of reduced condom use). METHODS: We developed a stochastic agent-based transmission model of HIV and gonorrhoea. We simulated a capped (max 2.5% of MSM) and uncapped (5.5% of MSM in 2018 declining to 3% in 2027) daily PrEP programme for high-risk MSM, with 3-mo

HIV and other STIs self-testing to reduce risk compensation among men who have sex with men who use oral pre-exposure prophylaxis in China: protocol for a randomised waitlist-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) reduces the risk of HIV infection among men who have sex with men by up to 99%. However, in real-world settings, PrEP users may exhibit risk compensation after uptake of PrEP, including more condomless anal intercourse (CAI) and increased sexually transmitted infection (STI) acquisition. HIV self-testing (HIVST) decreases CAI among men who have sex with men (MSM) by providing awareness of the HIV status of oneself and one's sexual partners. Here, we describe the rationale and design of a randomised waitlist-controlled trial to examine the impact of

A rigorous exploration of anal HPV genotypes using a next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach in HIV-infected men who have sex with men at risk for developing anal cancer.

BACKGROUND: There are no HPV-based measures for managing anal cancer (AC) in HIV-infected (HIV+) men who have sex with men (MSM) because of the high positivity of high-risk (HR)-HPVs. As next-generation sequencing (NGS) is able to describe the composition of HPVs as percent (%) reads rather than positive vs negative results, we used NGS approach to detect HPVs in anal samples of HIV+ MSM to test its ability to differentiate those who are diagnosed with atypical squamous cells of unknown significance or greater (ASCUS+) from those who are free of such lesions and to understand the burden of HPV

HIV pretreatment drug resistance among cisgender MSM and transgender women from Lima, Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Transmitted, or any pretreatment drug resistance (TDR, PDR) can compromise efficacy of first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART). In Peru, genotypic resistance testing is not routinely performed before ART initiation, and estimated PDR prevalence prior to 2012 ranged from 1.0% to 4.7%. We aimed to update estimates of PDR prevalence in men who have sex with men (cis-MSM) and transgender women (TW). METHODS: We obtained HIV sequences from three studies of ART-naïve cisgender-MSM and TW (n = 470) in Lima, Peru from 2013 to 2017, almost two-thirds of whom had acute or recent infection

Brief Report: Role of Sociobehavioral Factors in Subprotective TFV-DP Levels Among YMSM Enrolled in 2 PrEP Trials.

BACKGROUND: Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) experience disparities in HIV acquisition more than any other group. Daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir/emtricitabine has been shown to effectively prevent HIV transmission in YMSM; however, recent studies suggest that young Black men who have sex with men experience subprotective levels of tenofovir diphosphate more frequently than other groups. SETTING: Combined data from Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN) 110/113, 2 open-label PrEP studies that provided PrEP and evidence-based behavio

On-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate plus emtricitabine among men who have sex with men with less frequent sexual intercourse: a post-hoc analysis of the ANRS IPERGAY trial.

BACKGROUND: ANRS IPERGAY found that on-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate plus emtricitabine was associated with an 86% relative reduction of HIV-1 incidence compared with placebo among men who have sex with men at high risk of HIV. We aimed to investigate whether on-demand PrEP was similarly effective among individuals with lower exposure to HIV risk. METHODS: Participants in the ANRS IPERGAY trial were randomly assigned to receive PrEP (fixed-dose combination of 300 mg tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and 200 mg emtricitabine per pill) or placebo. HIV testing and engagement with the HIV treatment cascade among men who have sex with men in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV disproportionately affects gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Africa, where many countries criminalise same-sex behaviour. We assessed changes in the engagement of African MSM with HIV testing and treatment cascade stages over time, and the effect of anti-LGBT legislation and stigma. METHODS: We systematically searched Embase, Global Health, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science for peer-reviewed cross-sectional or longitudinal studies recruiting at least ten MSM, published from Jan 1, 1980, to Oct 10, 2018. We extracted or derived estimates of HIV testi

Making the Link: A Pilot Health Navigation Intervention to Improve Timely Linkage to Care for Men Who have Sex with Men and Transgender Women Recently Diagnosed with HIV in Guatemala City.

We piloted a health navigation strategy to promote timely linkage to care among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) recently diagnosed with HIV in Guatemala City. We used a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative data collected during clinic visits and qualitative data from in-depth interviews, to characterize acceptability of navigation and time to linkage, defined as having the first clinical care visit. Out of 54 participants who enrolled in the pilot (n = 52 MSM; n = 2 TW), 50 (92.6%) accepted navigation and all were linked to care. Median time to linkage wa

Predictors of condom use behavior among men who have sex with men in China using a modified information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in China. Correct and consistent condom use is one of the most effective strategies for preventing the spread of HIV. This study developed a modified Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model to predict condom use behavior among Chinese MSM. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect data using self-administered electronic questionnaire. Participants were recruited from HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing clinics in six district Centers for Disease Control a

HIV Risk and Prevention Outcomes in a Probability-Based Sample of Gay and Bisexual Men in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Although gay and bisexual men (GBM) represent the largest group of HIV-infected individuals in the United States, nearly all evidence on their HIV risk and prevention outcomes derive from nonprobability samples. SETTING: A probability-based cohort of GBM (N = 502) from 45 states and Washington, DC. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: Among HIV-negative/unknown/untested GBM, only 6.7% reported using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the past 6 months. Latent classes of sexual risk and corresponding STI and HIV positivity among MSM attending centres for sexual health in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVES: Continuing high STI positivity among men who have sex with men (MSM) attending centres for sexual health (CSH) indicates that high-risk behaviour is ongoing. The objective of this study was to gain a better insight into risk behaviours among MSM attending CSH and to explore STI and HIV positivity by subgroups. METHODS: We used national data routinely collected during CSH consultations for this study. From September to December 2017, questions on group sex, substance use and sex with HIV-positive partners were asked at each CSH consultation. We analysed latent classes of client-rel
