OBJECTIVE: This study proposes to test the hypothesis that early loss of a parent, coupled with poor quality family relationships, would result in long-term increased cardiovascular and cortisol reactivity to stress.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of mifepristone for cervical ripening in post-term pregnancies.
METHODS: Women with post-term pregnancies and Bishop scores less than 6 were assigned randomly to mifepristone (41 patients) or placebo (42 patients). Mifepristone was given orally in a dose of 400 mg. Efficacy was assessed by change in the Bishop score within 48 hours after treatment; a score of 6 or greater was considered a "strict" success. An "extended" success rate was defined, including all patients with scores of at least 6 or those who delivered within 48 hours of treatment.

The existence of a circadian rhythm of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in humans is controversial. We studied the plasma ANP response to isotonic blood volume expansion in the morning and in the afternoon and its relationship with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-cortisol diurnal variation in seven normal subjects. In order to evaluate the long-term effect of total hip replacement (THR) in patients with steroid-induced femoral head necrosis, 40 cases of 50 hips received THR patients were followed up for an average of 8.5 years after operation. The cortisol responses to acute administration of saline and of clonidine (Clon), 150 micrograms IV, were examined in 12 patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia, before and after 32 days of alprazolam therapy (2.5 mg/day), and in 12 normal controls. The responses in the Clon test corrected for the responses to saline differed in the two groups, and in patients were not changed by the therapy even though significant symptomatological improvement was achieved. The results suggest that presynaptic alpha 2- or postsynaptic alpha 1-beta-adrenoceptor sensitivity is impaired in panic disorder.

In 40 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD, < 65 years), 56 patients with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT, > or = 65 years) and 45 patients with vascular dementia (VAD), basal cortisol levels were estimated and the dexamethasone test (DST) was performed.
