Iron has been implicated in the pathophysiology of several models of acute and chronic renal disease. In this study, energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry was used to quantify and localize iron in rat remnant kidneys (RK) and normal kidneys (NK) and to determine its pathophysiologic significance. Urothelial tumors of renal pelvis and ureter are rare but clinically important neoplasms. They are histologically and cytologically similar to tumors of the bladder. As in the bladder, tumor stage and grade are the most important prognostic parameters. The TNM and AJCC staging systems are described, as are criteria and other lesions that may be mistaken for urothelial tumors.

Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on nine kidneys in six patients with renal infarction caused by renal arterial embolism secondary to cardiac valvular disease. Between January 1973 and January 1990 we carried out 1,038 kidney transplantations using a transvesical end-to-side implantation of the ureter in the bladder without an antireflux mechanism. Moreover, 30 transplantations were done in 26 patients with a urinary diversion. We examined the urological complications in these 1,068 consecutive transplants. Urinary leakage and obstruction were the two main urological posttransplant complications. In this report we describe a 57-year-old male hemophiliac with an acquired renal arteriovenous (AV) fistula presenting as a renal mass. Even after intravenous pyelography, ultrasound and computed tomography, a carcinoma seemed possible. Causes, symptoms and therapy of renal AV fistulas are shown and pitfalls in the usual diagnostic approach are discussed.

Since the complications herewith presented as a consequence of surgical renal biopsy are really exceptional and references found in the existing literature rare, we have considered that the contribution of these two cases which developed a pneumomediastinum-pneumoperitoneum and pneumocele prespectively during the immediate post-surgical period would be of interest. Evolution was favourable in both cases, with spontaneous resolution of the process.

Kidney transplantation is actually the best replacement therapy for the end stage renal failure. It sets free the hemodialysed patient from the hemodialysis restraint and contributes to solve the socio-economic problems risen by chronic hemodialysis. The authors report the results of this technic during the first 30 months of kidney transplantation in the "Hôpital Charles Nicolle" of Tunis.
