We investigated an outbreak of Acinetobacter baumannii in an adult intensive care unit of Kosin University Gospel Hospital in Busan, Republic of Korea. Two pediatricians in Anchorage observed that among patients of Samoan/Pacific Islander (S/PI) descent, bacterial wound cultures that grew Staphylococcus aureus often yielded methicillin-resistant isolates. To determine the epidemiology of bacteremias due to pneumococci not susceptible to penicillin (PNSP) at a university hospital, active microbiologic surveillance of bacteremias due to PNSP was done for 28 months.
