The Syrian Golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) has been used to model infections with the hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. New molecular immunological reagents to measure cellular immune responses in hamsters were developed and used to determine the impact of A. ceylanicum hookworm infection on host cytokine responses and lymphoproliferation. Initial larval infection with 100 third-stage A. ceylanicum larvae resulted in predominant Th1 responses (upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines) that lasted for the duration of larval migration and continued up to 14 days postinfection (prepatency).…

The mole salamander, Ambystoma talpoideum, exhibits both aquatic (gilled) and terrestrial (metamorphosed) adult morphologies. Previous studies have shown the existence of body-size advantages associated with the terrestrial morph in A. talpoideum and other polymorphic salamanders (e.g., A. tigrinum). However, aquatic adult A. talpoideum mature at a younger age and often breed earlier than terrestrial adults. We tested the hypothesis that early maturation and reproduction in aquatic adults increase fitness (irrespective of body size). We reared larval A. talpoideum in mesocosms and varied the t…

This study investigated the biological effects of alternating electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster eggs and the first, second and third instar larvae stages. D. melanogaster eggs and larval stages were exposed to a 11 mT 50 Hz field produced by a pair of Helmholtz coils. Each stage was exposed to aEMFs for 2, 4, 6 and 8 h. Features of adult flies such as head, thorax, abdomen and other morphological changes were studied and compared. The frequency of abnormal flies was calculated using statistical methods at P <.05. The results obtained from exposing…

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the most common etiological agent of eosinophilic meningitis. Adults are harbored in the pulmonary arteries of rats. Larvae develop within various natural (mollusks) and paratenic (snails...) hosts. After ingestion, larvae reach the human central nervous system where they cannot complete their life cycle. This zoonosis is usually seen in Southeast Asia and South Pacific islands. Nevertheless, a few imported cases have been reported in Western countries, possible because of the incubation delay. Mild meningeal irritation signs, paresthesia, cranial nerve abnormali…

During a 4-week holiday in Thailand a 13-year-old boy from Germany briefly fell ill with diarrhoea without blood-tinged stools and fever. 5 months later oedematous, reddish swellings occurred, at first on the right upper arm, later over the right side of the chest. Especially at night these swellings were associated with severe local and generalized itching. Bilaterally the axillary lymph-nodes were hard and slightly enlarged. There was a marked eosinophilia of 56%, the white count was 22,700/microliters and the serum level of IgE was raised to 1777 IU/ml. No worm eggs or larvae were found in …

Sheep which have been bred for resistance (R) or susceptibility (S) to fleece rot and blowfly strike, were tested for intradermal inflammatory responses to excretory and secretory products of Lucilia cuprina larvae. R rams and lambs gave significantly larger skin weals than S animals. In addition, R and S rams were infected with L cuprina first instar larvae and wound exudates were collected. In the first 12 hours of infection R rams released significantly more exudate protein at the wound site than S rams. Correlations suggested that exudate production was stimulated by both larval burden and…

Neurons containing luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) are first detected in newt embryos (Cynops pyrrhogaster) in the olfactory ep … r migration. In order to ascertain the origin and possible migration route of these neurons in newt larvae, the effect of unilateral or bilateral olfactory placodectomy on the LHRH neuronal system has been studied. Removal of the olfactory placode results in the absence of LHRH-immunoreactive cells in the nasal and brain regions of the operated side, wh …

An index for experimental transmission of filariasis infection was first introduced by Kartman and subsequently modified by Wharton who defined it as 'the number of infective larvae per mosquito when the microfilaria count is 1.0 mm-3 of human blood'. Since mosquitoes may not imbibe the expected number of microfilariae from the donor's blood during feeding because of various interference phenomena and/or mechanisms, this paper presents the index mosquito meal (Index MM), based on the actual number of viable microfilariae that are observed in the mosquito gut immediately after feeding. The Inde…

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is an uncommon parasitic disease that is caused by the intrahepatic growth of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae. Eastern France is endemic for AE. A wild cycle allows the parasite to subsist in nature. The adult worm develops in the small intestine of foxes. The eggs of the taenia are dispersed on the ground by the foxes' stools. Rodents are infested by eating contaminated vegetables and larvae develop in the liver. Humans, accidental intermediate hosts, become infested due to either eating contaminated wild fruits, or by touching foxes or dogs. The human lesions …

In the present study, a trial was made to evaluate the monoclonal antibody produced as a tool in the detection of circulating antigen. For the preparation of monoclonal antibodies, four Balb/C mice were immunized with Trichinella spiralis larvae. Immunized spleen cells were prepared and a suitable mutant NS1 myeloma cell line was used for fusion. Eighty white swiss albino mice were orally infected with 500 L1 T. spiralis larvae. Their serum was collected at different periods i.e. 5, 11, 18 and 28 days post infection for the detection of circulating antigen which was done by the ELISA technique…

The abundance of parasites of public health significance in pen-reared salmon and wild-caught salmon was compared. Two hundred eighty-seven salmon from Puget Sound, Washington, were examined for third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex. Of these fish, 237 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) were reared in commercial salmon pens and 50 sockeye salmon (O. nerka) were caught during their spawning migration. All wild-caught salmon were found to be infected with larval A. simplex; conversely, all pen-reared fishes lacked such infection…

Splenocytes from rats infected with Taenia taeniaeformis showed an early decreased proliferative response to the mitogen concanavalin A with larval growth. When larvae culture supernatant (in vitro product) was added to normal rat splenocytes, there was a decrease in the proliferative response to concanavalin A and phytohemagglutinin. The ability of infected rat splenocytes to produce interleukin-2 was decreased with larval growth. Addition of in vitro product to culture medium significantly depressed interleukin-2 production by normal as well as infected rat spleen cells. Culturing normal rat…

Dose-titration trials of ivermectin were conducted on pups with dual experimental infections of 4th-stage larvae or adult Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala. Ivermectin was administered orally or subcutaneously at dosages of 0.006, 0.012, or 0.024 mg/kg of body weight. Maximal or near maximal (greater than or equal to 96% to 100%) anthelmintic effect was observed for both stages of development for each hookworm species by either route of administration at a dosage of 0.024 mg/kg. Responses for all of the aforementioned categories were linearly related to increasing log dosage of iv…

A model of human hookworm infection has been defined with a strain of Ancylostoma ceylanicum that is known to be infective for humans. In the first experiment, dogs were infected with between 150 and 12,150 filariform larvae and followed up for six weeks. A direct relation was found between the size of infecting dose, fecal egg excretion, intestinal adult worm burden, and worm distribution in the bowel. Dogs with heavy infection developed bloody diarrhea and iron-deficient anemia. In the second experiment, dogs infected with 2,000 larvae excreted ova until autopsy 36 weeks after infection. Nor…

Praziquantel was evaluated for its larvicidal activity against naturally or experimentally induced Taenia hydatigena infections in sheep. The major criterion used for assessing efficacy was an estimate of the dose rate required to free 90 per cent of the sheep from infection (ED90) together with a 95 per cent confidence interval. With both light and heavy infections of three-month-old T hydatigena in lambs up to 12 months old, many larvae were killed. The ED90 and 95 per cent confidence limits for six-month-old and aged organisms was estimated to be 13.1 (5.5 to 31.4) mg/kg and 6.1 (2.4 to 15.…
