Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a disease predominantly of older adults. Treatment of AML in the elderly is complicated not only by comorbidities but also by the high prevalence of poor prognosis markers. Thirty-one consecutive unselected patients with AML older than 60 years (representing 33% of all AML cases diagnosed at our institution during the same period) were followed over a period of 5 years (1997-2002). Hairy cell Leukaemia (HCL) is a rare chronic lymphoid hemoproliferation. Few studies have been carried out in this area in sub-Saharan Africa. To investigate the association between occupation and the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and to test whether the associations may vary by histological type of NHL, we analyzed data from two population-based, case-control studies of NHL performed in Kansas and Nebraska. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) occurs predominantly in elderly patients. The treatment options for patients with CLL have increased with the introduction of purine analogs, and promising results have been reported with fludarabine and cladribine when these agents are used in newly diagnosed and relapsed disease. Monoclonal antibodies such as alemtuzumab and rituximab are also clinically active in CLL. Data on all patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) aged 60 or older, referred to our institution over a 18-year period, were studied to determine the incidence and range of clinical and biological subtypes, and the outcome of different therapeutic approaches. The time and site of induction of leukemia inhibitory factor mRNA in injured rat sciatic nerves and its regulation in Schwann cells and fibroblasts from neonatal rat nerves were investigated.
