Vaccine exposure during pregnancy among privately and publicly insured women in the United States, 2016-2018.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine use during pregnancy affects maternal and infant health. Many women do not receive vaccines recommended during pregnancy; conversely, inadvertent exposure to vaccines contraindicated or not recommended during pregnancy may occur. We assessed exposure to two recommended vaccines and two vaccines not recommended during pregnancy among privately and Medicaid-insured women in the United States. METHODS: This study includes a retrospective cohort of pregnancies in women aged 12-55 years resulting in live birth, spontaneous abortion, or stillbirth identified in the IBM® MarketSc

New-generation antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy and the risk of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: A scoping review.

The use of maternal antiepileptic drug (AED) during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of cognitive adverse effects among the offspring. As new-generation AEDs continue to enter the market, evidence on their safety during pregnancy is limited yet necessary. To date, there are no published reviews summarizing the evidence of new-generation AED exposure in utero and the development of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the offspring. The objective of this scoping review is to summarize the available evidence on the risk of ADHD after maternal exposure to new-generatio…

Maternal proximity to petrochemical industrial parks and risk of premature rupture of membranes.

BACKGROUND: Living near petrochemical industries has been reported to increase the risks of adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm delivery. However, evidence regarding the role of petrochemical exposure in pregnancy complications remains limited. This study evaluated the association between maternal proximity to petrochemical industrial parks (PIPs) during pregnancy and the occurrence of premature rupture of membranes (PROM). METHODS: We performed a population-based 1:3 case-control study by using the 2004-2014 Taiwanese Birth Certificate Database. Birth records reporte

Beneficial effects of co-treatment with dextromethorphan on prenatally methadone-exposed offspring.

BACKGROUND: Heroin use among young women of reproductive age has drawn much attention around the world. Although methadone is widely used in maintenance therapy for heroin/morphine addiction, the long-term effects of prenatal exposure to methadone and preventative therapy remain unclear. For revealing this question, female pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were sub-grouped to receive (1) vehicle, (2) methadone 5 mg/kg at embryonic day 3 (E3) and then 7 mg/kg from E4 to E20, (3) dextromethorphan (DM) 3 mg/kg, and (4) methadone + DM (the rats received methadone followed by DM treatment), subcutaneous

Developmental effects of physiologically weak electric fields and heat: an overview.

This study summarizes the possible effects on prenatal development of physiologically weak electric fields induced in the body by exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields and of elevated temperature levels that might result from exposure to radiofrequency (RF) radiation. Both topics have been discussed at recent international workshops organized by WHO in collaboration with other bodies. Mammalian development is characterized by a highly ordered sequence of cell proliferation and differentiation, migration, and programmed cell death. These processes, particularly prolif

Mercury exposure in children: a review.

Exposure to toxic mercury (Hg) is a growing health hazard throughout the world today. Recent studies show that mercury exposure may occur in the environment, and increasingly in occupational and domestic settings. Children are particularly vulnerable to Hg intoxication, which may lead to impairment of the developing central nervous system, as well as pulmonary and nephrotic damage. Several sources of toxic Hg exposure in children have been reported in biomedical literature: (1) methylmercury, the most widespread source of Hg exposure, is most commonly the result of consumption of contaminated

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution and the risk of premature rupture of membranes: a cohort analysis of the Korean CHildren's ENvironmental health Study (Ko-CHENS).

Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is a common and consequential childbirth complication. Although several studies suggest that air pollution may elevate PROM risk, the evidence remains limited. We therefore examined the association between traffic-related air pollutants, other ambient pollutants, and PROM in a prospective mother-child cohort. We analyzed 4096 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Korean CHildren's ENvironmental health Study (Ko-CHENS) core cohort. Ambient exposures to particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon mon

Adverse and adaptive placental DNA methylation changes linking prenatal air pollution exposure to child lung function: findings from the SEPAGES cohort.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal air pollution exposure (PAPE) may have programming effects on offspring health. Placental epigenetic modifications are hypothesised to mediate this relationship, but evidence remains limited. We investigated the mediating role of placental DNA methylation (DNAm) in the association between prenatal exposure to NO2, PM2.5 and PM2.5 oxidative potential (OP) and newborn lung function. METHODS: Placental DNAm was measured using the Infinium HumanMethylationEPIC BeadChip in 395 participants from the French cohort SEPAGES. PAPE was estimated via personal sensors. Lung function (

Prenatal Administration of Oleic Acid or Linolenic Acid Reduces Neuromorphological and Cognitive Alterations in Ts65dn Down Syndrome Mice.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive impairments that characterize Down syndrome (DS) have been attributed to brain hypocellularity due to neurogenesis impairment during fetal stages. Thus, enhancing prenatal neurogenesis in DS could prevent or reduce some of the neuromorphological and cognitive defects found in postnatal stages. OBJECTIVES: As fatty acids play a fundamental role in morphogenesis and brain development during fetal stages, in this study, we aimed to enhance neurogenesis and the cognitive abilities of the Ts65Dn (TS) mouse model of DS by administering oleic or linolenic acid. METHODS: In

Are preconceptional stressful experiences crucial elements for the aetiology of autism spectrum disorder? Insights from an animal model.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by changes in social interactions, impaired language and communication, fear responses and presence of repetitive behaviours. Although the genetic bases of ASD are well documented, the recent increase in clinical cases of idiopathic ASD indicates that several environmental risk factors could play a role in ASD aetiology. Among these, maternal exposure to psychosocial stressors during pregnancy has been hypothesized to affect the risk for ASD in offspring. Here, we tested the hypothesis that preconceptiona…
