Bridging the Methodological Gap Between Inertial Sensors and Optical Motion Capture: Deep Learning as the Path to Accurate Joint Kinematic Modelling Using Inertial Sensors.

As advancements in inertial measurement units (IMUs) for motion analysis progress, the inability to directly apply decades of research-based optical motion capture (OMC) methodologies presents a significant challenge. This study aims to bridge this gap by proposing an innovative deep learning approach to predict marker positions from IMU data, allowing traditional OMC-based calculations to estimate joint kinematics. Eighteen participants walked on a treadmill with seven IMUs and retroreflective markers. Trials were divided into normalized gait cycles (101 frames), and an autoencoder network wi…

Intrafractional Motion in Online-Adaptive Magnetic Resonance-Guided Radiotherapy of Adrenal Metastases Leads to Reduced Target Volume Coverage and Elevated Organ-at-Risk Doses.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Stereotactic body radiotherapy is frequently used in patients with adrenal metastases. Motion of adherent radiosensitive organs at risk (OARs) and tumors influence OAR toxicity and tumor control. Online-adaptive Magnetic Resonance-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) can address and mitigate interfractional changes. However, the impact of intrafractional variations in adrenal MRgRT is unknown. METHODS: A total of 23 patients with 24 adrenal metastases were treated with MRgRT. After daily plan adaptation and before beam application, an additional (preRT) 3d MRI was acquired. PreR…

Visualizing Cardiac Motion Using Subcutaneously Measured Electrocardiography and Three-Axis Acceleration: Day-to-Day Comparability and Event-Related Changes in Congestive Heart Failure Patients.

Continuous monitoring of cardiac motion offers valuable insights into heart failure (HF) progression and management. This study explores a method to visualize heart motion trajectories from a novel subcutaneous sensor by integrating electrocardiogram (ECG) data with data from a three-axis accelerometer. The area of the plane covered by those trajectories may enable assessing changing cardiac function quantitatively. During systole the trajectories clearly showed multi-axial mechanical motion of the contracting chest following the cardiac ejection of blood from the left ventricle into the syste…

Can bone SPECT/CT and 18 F-NaF PET/CT diagnose the cause of persistent pain due to motion sparing devices: a case series.

PURPOSE: Can positron emission tomography/CT (18 F-NaF PET/CT) and Bone single-photon emission CT (SPECT/CT) be used to diagnose the cause of persistent pain in motion-sparing devices? Interspinous devices (ISD) and cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) are used increasingly. While a desired outcome is achieved in a portion of these patients, others develop persistent postoperative symptoms. Etiology of these symptoms is diagnosed with imaging such as x-ray, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Despite these modalities, there is a subset of patients with persistent pain wh…

Repeated deep-inspiration breath-hold CT scans at planning underestimate the actual motion between breath-holds at treatment for lung cancer and lymphoma patients.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Deep-inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) during radiotherapy may reduce dose to the lungs and heart compared to treatment in free breathing. However, intra-fractional target shifts between several breath-holds may decrease target coverage. We compared target shifts between four DIBHs at the planning-CT session with those measured on CBCT-scans obtained pre- and post-DIBH treatments. MATERIAL/METHODS: Twenty-nine lung cancer and nine lymphoma patients were treated in DIBH. An external gating block was used as surrogate for the DIBH-level with a window of 2 mm. Four DIBH CT-scans

Quantification of six-degree-of-freedom motion during beam delivery in spine stereotactic body radiotherapy using intra-irradiation cone-beam computed tomography imaging technique.

PURPOSE: Quantifying intra-fractional six-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) residual errors or motion from approved patient setups is necessary for accurate beam delivery in spine stereotactic body radiotherapy. However, previously reported errors were not acquired during beam delivery. Therefore, we aimed to quantify the 6DoF residual errors and motions during arc beam delivery using a concurrent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging technique, intra-irradiation CBCT. METHODS: Consecutive 15 patients, 19 plans for various treatment sites, and 199 CBCT images were analyzed. Pre-irradiation CBCT…
