'Proptosis'--may be the only presenting feature of small cell lung cancer: a case report.

Orbital metastasis from solid tumours is an uncommon entity and lung, breast and nasopharyngeal cancers are the common sites causing such a metastasis. Proptosis as the only presenting feature without any symptom suggesting lung as the primary site is very rare. Here is a report of a patient who presented with proptosis as the only complaint and subsequent investigations proved it to be due to small cell lung cancer metastasis and without metastatic spread to any other site.

Polymyositis in association with polycythaemia vera.

Inflammatory myopathies are reported to be associated with various malignancies. This association is more commonly observed in cases of dermatomyosis and less frequently in polymyositis. Malignancies commonly reported in association with inflammatory myopathies include non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and ovarian, lung and gastric carcinomas, as well as nasopharyngeal malignancies. Polycythaemia vera as a cause of polymyositis is unknown. We report a case of polycythaemia vera in a female patient who developed polymyositis three years later.

Human metapneumovirus pneumonia in adults: results of a prospective study.

We prospectively collected clinical, laboratory, and radiographic data regarding community-acquired human metapneumovirus (hMPV) infection in consecutive adults hospitalized with pneumonia. hMPV infection was diagnosed using highly accurate reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis of nasopharyngeal samples. Eight (4%) of 193 patients had hMPV RNA present, all detected during influenza season. hMPV is an important cause of pneumonia in adults.

Mesenchymal hamartoma in nasopharynx: a case report.

Hamartoma in the nasopharynx of the children is especially rare. Most documented cases occurred in infants, with characteristic histologic features of a mixture of various mesenchymal tissues. We report a case arising in a 15-year-old male patient, who presented with a 1-month history of right-sided nasal obstruction. The mass was resected endoscopically and confirmed histologically as a lymphoid hamartoma. We report and discuss the pathological features of this rare nasopharyngeal hamartoma.

The coexistence of hepatitis A and infectious mononucleosis.

Hepatitis A is an acute, self-limited disease that spreads predominantly by the fecal-oral route. Hepatitis A characteristically has an acute, sudden influenza-like onset with a prominence of myalgia, headache, fever and malaise. Infectious mononucleosis is an acute illness characterized clinically by sore throat, fever and lymphadenopathy. The virus usually spreads from person to person by close contact with nasopharyngeal secretions. In this case the coexistence of both diseases in the same patient is found interesting.

Inferior turbinate angiofibroma: an atypical presentation [correction of preservation].

Angiofibromas are nasopharyngeal tumours mostly seen in adolescent males. They usually present with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. They account for less than 0.5% of all head and neck tumours. Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas although rare, have been reported (Ali et al., 1982). The most common extranasopharyngeal site is the maxillary sinus. We report a case of extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma arising from the inferior turbinate which had an unusual clinical presentation.

Mechanics-guided parametric modeling of intranasal spray devices and formulations for targeted drug delivery to the nasopharynx.

INTRODUCTION: Improving the efficacy of nasal sprays by enhancing targeted drug delivery to intra-airway tissue sites prone to infection onset is hypothesized to be achievable through an optimization of key device and formulation parameters, such as the sprayed droplet sizes, the spray cone angle, and the formulation density. This study focuses on the nasopharynx, a primary locus of early viral entry, as the optimal target for intranasal drug delivery. METHODS: Two full-scale three-dimensional anatomical upper airway geometries reconstructed from high-resolution computed tomography scans were

Herd-level occurrence and risk factors associated with respiratory and enteric pathogens from dairy calves in Ontario: A cross-sectional study.

This cross-sectional herd-level study aimed to determine the occurrence of and risk factors for pathogens associated with neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) on Ontario dairy farms. From April to August 2022, a convenience sample of 100 dairy farms was visited once. A questionnaire covering farm biosecurity, calving and colostrum management, preweaning nutrition, and housing was administered on-farm. At each farm visit, approximately 5 calves between 2 and 35 d old were randomly selected for fecal sampling. Furthermore, approximately 5 calves between 21 to 122 d o

An observational study for appraisal of clinical outcome and risk of mother-to-child SARS-CoV-2 transmission in neonates provided the benefits of mothers' own milk.

This observational study done during April-December 2020 at a tertiary-care hospital in Haryana (India) enrolled 152 SARS-CoV-2-exposed neonates. Among them, 150 neonates had perinatal SARS-CoV-2 exposure and 2 neonates had late postnatal exposure. Stable infant-mother dyads were roomed-in with precautions to support breastfeeding. Nasopharyngeal swabs collected from neonates were tested for SARS-CoV-2 by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test. There was a high incidence of prematurity (23%), low birth weight (31%), intrauterine fetal distress (16%), perinatal asphyxia (

Validity of complete blood count in detecting influenza among clinically suspected children in Sri Lanka: a retrospective study from low resource setting country.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza in children ranges from subclinical to severe illness with complications. However, confirmation of its diagnosis based on a positive PCR test for nasopharyngeal swab has become a challenge due to its cost and the discomfort of the procedure. The study aimed to assess the validity of Complete Blood Count (CBC) parameters in detecting influenza among clinically suspected children. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in a sample of children clinically suspected of influenza at three private hospitals in Galle. All children with clinical suspicion of influenza by

Postinfectious SARS-CoV-2 Opsoclonus-Myoclonus-Ataxia Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome (OMAS) represents a pathophysiology and diagnostic challenge. Although the diverse etiologies likely share a common mechanism to generate ocular, trunk, and limb movements, the underlying cause may be a paraneoplastic syndrome, as the first sign of cancer, or may be a postinfectious complication, and thus, the outcome depends on identifying the trigger mechanism. A recent hypothesis suggests increased GABAA receptor sensitivity in the olivary-oculomotor vermis-fastigial nucleus-premotor saccade burst neuron circuit in the brainstem. Therefor

Safety of nasal stenting in pharyngeal flap surgery for pediatric velopharyngeal dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: The pharyngeal flap procedure is an effective surgery for velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) yet carries approximately a 3.2% post-operative airway obstruction risk. Life threatening airway compromise occurs in first 24 h post-operatively. Nasopharyngeal airway has been shown to decrease these complications but its routine use is not commonplace. At our centre, surgical technique involves routine placement of bilateral nasopharyngeal airway referred to as nasal stenting. Our objective was to demonstrate safety of nasal stenting for children with VPD undergoing pharyngeal flap surge

High genetic diversity of Staphylococcus aureus strains colonising the nasopharynx of Gambian villagers before widespread use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.

BACKGROUND: With the global efforts of reducing pneumococcal disease through widespread introduction of pneumococcal vaccines, concerns have emerged on the potential increase of morbidity and mortality from S. aureus disease. Little is known however, of the carriage rates of S. aureus or of its' relationship with carriage of S. pneumoniae in rural Africa, and West Africa in particular where very high rates of carriage of S. pneumoniae have been reported. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence, antibiotic susceptibility patterns and genotypes of S. aureus isolated from the nasopharynx of he
