A distinct pathologic entity characterized by expression of the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) protein (hence described as ALK lymphoma) has emerged within the heterogeneous group of CD30 anaplastic large-cell lymphomas. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is extremely rare in anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. In children, only isolated cases have been reported, mainly as secondary CNS involvement. We report on a 13-year-old boy presenting with headaches and diplopia. Cerebrospinal fluid was infiltrated with atypical large granular lymphocytes. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain reve

A 10-yr-old male intact Asian small clawed otter (Aonyx cinerus) was presumptively diagnosed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry with lymphangiosarcoma after bony destruction of the ischium and spinal column from local tumor invasion had caused progressive signs of hind limb lameness and paresis/paralysis, which led to humane euthanasia. At necropsy, the primary tumor was identified as a flocculent mass present under the caudal lumbar vertebrae. Multiple nerves were seen to run from the spinal cord into the wall of the mass. This mass had locally invaded the surrounding muscle, vertebra

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the necessity of total colonic evaluation in patients diagnosed with anal cancer. We reviewed the cases of 69 patients treated for neoplasm of the anus from January 1973 through November 1998. Patients underwent a barium enema, flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy; findings from these procedures were analyzed. Anal pathology included: squamous cell carcinoma, 48 patients (72%); adenocarcinoma, 6 patients (9%); and squamous cell carcinoma in situ, 10 patients (15%). Chemoradiation was completed in 41 patients (61%), and 6 patients (9%) underwent abdomi

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) is a rare syndrome of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) with pheochromocytoma and/or primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP), usually due to multigland hyperplasia. MEN 2 is associated with several RET protooncogene mutations. A 61-year-old woman with a family history of RET-positive MTC presented with a solitary thyroid nodule. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was suspicious for neoplasm. Biochemical studies revealed basal hypercalcitoninemia (116 pg/mL [normal <26]) and PHP (serum calcium, 10.9 mg/dL; intact PTH, 113.2 pg/mL [10.0-65.0]). Pheochromocytoma s

Cystic degeneration in thymoma is a relatively frequent but focal event. In rare cases, the process proceeds to the extent that most or all of the lesion becomes cystic. The authors studied ten cases of thymoma undergoing cystic degeneration of such degree that the lesions initially were mistaken grossly and microscopically for nonneoplastic thymic cysts. The patients' ages ranged from 23 to 81 years, and the sex distribution was equal. The lesions were characterized by the formation of multiple large cystic cavities filled with clear, hemorrhagic or grumose material. Histologically, residual

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (IPT-like FDCS) is a rare tumor. This study aimed to reveal the radiological characteristics of IPT-like FDCS by radiologic-pathologic correlation.
RESULTS: We analyzed two cases of IPT-like FDCS in the liver, nine in the spleen, and two in both the liver and spleen concomitantly. IPT-like FDCS presented as well-defined iso- or hypodense masses on unenhanced computed tomography (CT) images in both the liver and spleen. Hyperintensities on T1-weighted images and hypointensities on T2-weighted images with hypointense ri

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare cancer that often requires multimodality therapy to treat; however, these therapies can cause changes in the biology of the tumor. Several reports have documented pathologic changes but only recently have genetic changes been mapped. We present case of two separate synchronous primary rhabdomyosarcomas in a 17-month-old patient and discuss the pathophysiology and genetic changes that occur with treatment. We hypothesize that a genetic field defect arising in development of the urogenital sinus caused the tumors, but that treatment modalities may have caused

BACKGROUND: 18 F-FDOPA PET/CT was proved to be a highly sensitive imaging method for detecting head and neck paraganglioma (HNPGL). The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between tumor characteristics and the SDHx-mutational status in a large series of patients with HNPGL evaluated by 18 F-FDOPA PET/CT.
METHODS: A total of 104 patients with HNPGL (65 sporadic/39 SDHx-mutated) were included.
RESULTS: In comparison to SDHB/SDC/SDHx-negative cases, patients with SDHD were younger at diagnosis and had a higher rate of multifocal, vagal, and carotid paraganglioma. In patien

BACKGROUND: Androgen insensitivity syndrome is an X-linked disorder, and is characterised by a female phenotype in a chromosomally male individual. It usually occurs in puberty with primary amenorrhoea or as an inguinal tumour in a female infant. In recent years, it is often also diagnosed in fertility clinics in adulthood.
OBJECTIVE: The case is presented of a pure seminoma in a woman with the reference diagnosis of inguinal hernia.
CLINICAL CASE: A 53 year old woman, who was operated on in 2014 due to a nodule in left groin. Androgen insensitivity syndrome was corroborated, and histopathol

Ependymomas are rare glial tumors of the central nervous system that arise from the cells lining the ventricles and central canal within the spinal cord. The distribution of these tumors along the neuroaxis varies by age, most commonly involving the spinal cord in adults and the posterior fossa in children. It is becoming evident that ependymomas of infratentorial, supratentorial, and spinal cord location are genetically distinct which may explain the differences in clinical outcomes. A novel oncogenic fusion involving the C11orf95 and RELA genes was recently described in supratentorial ependy

BACKGROUND: Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is a chronic B-cell leukaemia characterized by expansion of neoplastic cells in the spleen, bone marrow and blood. Symptoms of HCL are related to pancytopenia and immune deficiency. Patients with HCL have an increased risk of second malignancy either in a form of synchronous disease or in a form of an increased incidence of a second neoplasm after the treatment of HCL. Hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL) is a rare form of aggressive extranodal T-cell lymphoma. Its pathogenesis is connected to a chronic immune deficiency status and its coexistence with o

Up to 11% of chondrosarcomas may undergo regional anaplastic change, resulting in a high-grade noncartilaginous sarcoma arising within a typically low-grade chondrosarcoma. Known as dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas, these tumors are highly malignant with a very poor prognosis. The most important factor affecting survival is an accurate preoperative diagnosis. Therefore, the ability to predict the possibility of dedifferentiation in a malignant cartilage tumor on the basis of imaging findings is critical to ensure adequate tumor sampling at the time of biopsy. Imaging findings at radiography, c

Between June 1981 and May 1988, 51 children with diffuse undifferentiated, advanced (Murphy Stage III and IV) intra-abdominal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were treated on an intensive multi-drug chemotherapy protocol without irradiation to the primary tumour. Therapy was completed for Stage III disease at one year, but Stage IV patients continued with a further year of therapy until January 1986, when it was reduced to one year. Central nervous system (CNS) prophylaxis consisted of eight doses of intrathecal MTX for all children, and 24 Gy cranial irradiation for Stage IV patients only. There were 4

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of fibroblastic differentiation, originally described in the pleura and subsequently documented at multiple extrapleural sites. Oral involvement is uncommon and may be diagnostically challenging because of its variable clinical presentation and overlapping spindle-cell morphology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a palatal SFT with clinical, imaging, histopathological and immunohistochemical correlation. In parallel, a systematic review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for studies published between Janua

Positron emission tomography /CT images showed a moderately increased 18F-FDG uptake in the mass of left lung lower lobe superior segment (SUVmax: 2.71). No pathological 18F-FDG involvement was detected in another region of the whole body scan. The patient underwent tru-cut biopsy. Since histopathological diagnosis could not be made, thoracotomy was performed. Schwannomas are the second most common benign peripheral nerve sheath originated tumor. Due to its development from Schwann cells, it can be seen in all organs or tissues during intracranial, extracranial, or spinal nerve courses where t

Neoplastic proliferations of neuroendocrine cells (NE) may occur throughout the entire GI tract but affect particularly appendix and ileum ("midgut carcinoids"), rectum ("hindgut carcinoids"), as well as stomach and the duodenum ("foregut carcinoids"). Only more exceptionally, they arise in the esophagus, jejunum and colon. The NE tumors encompass a heterogeneous gross and microscopic structural spectrum, ranging from inconspicuous microproliferations ("mucous membrane nevi") to bulky tumor masses. Their growth patterns are usually characteristic and easily recognized. In doubtful cases their
