How I do it: a purely endoscopic endonasal approach for anterior clinoidal meningioma.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for anterior clinoid meningiomas (ACMs) remains challenging due to their tight adhesion to vital neurovascular and has been traditionally performed through a transcranial approach. METHOD: We present the key steps of the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for ACMs with a video illustration and figures. The relevant surgical anatomy is described along with the indications and limitations of this approach. CONCLUSION: The EEA offers a good treatment option for selected ACMs. It allows for the removal of involved hyperostotic bone and dural attachments, early identification

Systemic Erysipelas Outbreak among Free-Ranging Bottlenose Dolphins, San Diego, California, USA, 2022.

We diagnosed fatal Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae sepsis in 3 stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) during summer 2022, in San Diego, California, USA. The previously undetected disease in this relatively small, regional population of dolphins most likely indicates an environmental or biological change in the coastal ocean or organisms.

Guidelines of the French Society of ENT (SFORL): Drug-induced sleep endoscopy in adult obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the indications, anesthesiological and surgical procedure and interest of drug-induced sleep endoscopy in the treatment of adult obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. DESIGN: A redactional committee of 17 experts was set up. Conflicts of interest were disclosed and followed up throughout the process of drawing up the guidelines. The work received no funding from any firm dealing in health products (drugs or devices). The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) method was applied to assess the quality of the data on which the guidelines we

Wet surface wall model for latent heat exchange during evaporation.

Air conditioning is a dual heat and mass transfer process, and the human nasal cavity achieves this through the mucosal wall surface, which is supplied with an energy source through the sub-epithelial network of capillaries. Computational studies of air conditioning in the nasal cavity have included temperature and humidity, but most studies solved these flow parameters separately, and in some cases, a constant mucosal surface temperature was used. Recent developments demonstrated that both heat and mass transfer need to be modeled. This work expands on existing modeling efforts in accounting

A Rare Instance of Pterygopalatine Fossa Tumor With Hearing Loss as the Main Complaint.

Pterygopalatine schwannomas are rare tumors which usually cause the symptoms of the traffic area by the tumors in the pterygopalatine fossa which is difficult to resection. This paper presents 1 rare case of pterygopalatine fossa tumor with hearing loss as the main complaint treated by total resection through the endoscopic endonasal approach.

Management of Wide Alar Lobule Using Preservation Rhinoplasty Philosophy: Alar Coring Technique.

A broad alar base disrupts nasal harmony and facial aesthetic balance and is an aesthetic concern for many patients. This wide appearance may be related to excessive nostril sill, alar flare, wide alar lobule, or a combination. Many techniques are described in literature to address the alar base with resultant scars to a variable degree. Management of alar lobule thickness is particularly challenging. Our technique presented here introduces a novel method to reduce the thickness of the alar lobule with excellent aesthetic outcome.

Understanding Nasal Valve Compromise in Nasal Airway Obstruction: A New Classification System.

OBJECTIVES: A key aspect of rhinoplasty is integrity of nasal valves area because of its fundamental role in patent nasal airway. furthermore, nasal obstruction is a dominant feature in patient with nasal valves dysfunction (NVD) which can be devastating outcome after rhinoplasty. METHODS: Nonetheless, NVD has been widely investigated regarding their etiologies and management. However, it has been assumed that the anatomical complexity and interplay between its structures causing a confusion for a beginner surgeon to diagnose and treat NVD. This study was approved by the institutional review …

Defining regional variation in nasal anatomy to guide ethnic rhinoplasty: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Recently, there has been increasing focus on understanding nasal anatomy in ethnic populations and using it to guide rhinoplasty … the African continent. Several established sub-classification schemes exist for the Latin American nose. CONCLUSIONS: Awareness of the heterogeneity of ethnic nasal anatomy is critical for surgeons performing rhinoplasty on non-Caucasian patients.

Defining 'control' of chronic rhinosinusitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Control is a global disease metric defined as the extent to which manifestations of a disease are within acceptable limits. Control serves as the goal of treatment for chronic diseases, such as chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), that cannot be cured. The objective of this review is to summarize recommendations for assessment of CRS control with a specific focus on how these recommendations align with patients' and healthcare providers' perspectives of CRS control. RECENT FINDINGS: Several staging systems for CRS control have been developed with the first and most widely recogniz

Evidence of a functional clitoris in dolphins.

In species that copulate during non-conceptive periods, such as humans and bonobos, sexual intercourse is known to be pleasurable for females. Dolphins also copulate throughout the year, largely to establish and maintain social bonds1. In dolphins, the clitoris is positioned in the anterior aspect of the vaginal entrance2, where physical contact and stimulation during copulation is likely. Clitoral stimulation seems to be important during female-female sexual interactions in common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), which rub each other's clitorises using snouts, flippers, or flukes3. D…

The association of nasal foreign bodies with type 1 hypersensitivity in children.

PURPOSE: This study aimed at investigating the type 1 hypersensitivity reaction frequency of children with nasal foreign body history. METHODS: From the medical records, we collected data regarding demographics (age and gender), symptoms, history of allergic diseases, physical examination, laboratory and test results, radiographic findings, the presence of any need for a second intervention, and complications. By reference to the presence of nasal foreign body history, two groups were constituted: the nasal foreign body group and the control group. Type 1 hypersensitivity frequency of the nas

A Systematic Review of Primary Rhinoplasty in Patients With Bilateral Cleft Lip.

BACKGROUND: Primary rhinoplasty (PR)at the time of cleft lip repair is controversial. We previously performed a systematic review that supported PR during unilateral cleft lip repair. We now aim to determine whether the same idea translates to care of patients with bilateral cleft lip. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis statement guidelines. PubMed and Embase databases were searched for studies that met our inclusion criteria: (1) English language, (2) human subjects, (3) rhinoplasty at the time of bilatera

Transcaruncular anterior ethmoidal artery ligation.

Recurrence of epistaxis after ligation or embolization of the sphenopalatine artery may require ligation of the ipsilateral anterior ethmoidal artery, which cannot be embolized because of the risk to the ophthalmic artery. We describe a transconjunctival transcaruncular approach that allows reliable low-risk access to the anterior ethmoidal artery. This technique offers a minimally invasive approach to the surgical site, without unsightly scar.
