Orbital Rhabdomyosarcoma Masquerading as a Dermoid Cyst: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

The purpose of this report is to present a case of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) masquerading as a dermoid cyst. A six-year-old boy with an unremarkable medical history presented in the outpatient department with a palpable mass in the superonasal region of the right orbit, which had rapidly grown in the past month. The most likely diagnosis was dermoid cyst and the patient was scheduled for surgical excision. A high index of suspicion was raised intraoperatively based on the appearance of the lesion due to the presence of a feeder vessel. The histopathology examination identified alveolar RM

Reconstruction of Medial Orbital Wall Using Autologous Perpendicular Plate of Ethmoid.

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of perpendicular plate of ethmoid as material for the reconstruction of medial orbital wall. The main outcome measurement was preoperative and postoperative orbital volume. The authors performed a study including 17 patients who have isolated medial orbital wall fracture (blow-out fracture). All the patients were fixed the defect using autologous perpendicular plate of ethmoid under endonasal approach. The authors compared the preoperative and postoperative orbital volume difference (unaffected orbit, affected orbit) of all the patients,

Plastic orbital foreign body: the rise of plastic and its unintended consequences.

Intraorbital foreign bodies (IOrFBs) are a significant cause of ocular morbidity. Although plastic IOrFBs are rare, the increasing use of plastic and polymer composites in motor vehicles will increase their prevalence. Although challenging to identify, plastic IOrFBs have unique radiographic characteristics. The authors describe a case of an 18-year-old man with a history of a motor vehicle accident and a left upper eyelid laceration. In retrospect, imaging suggested a plastic IOrFB, which was initially overlooked. A follow-up examination demonstrated persistent left upper lid ptosis with an u

Varicella zoster virus meningoencephalitis presenting as orbital myositis - a case report.

The authors present a case of meningoencephalitis caused by Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, which initially manifested as orbital myositis followed by rapid progression to orbital apex syndrome, meningoencephalitis and death. There was no development of a cutaneous rash. An orbital biopsy demonstrated VZV infection, which was confirmed on a lumbar puncture. In this case, VZV meningoencephalitis was not responsive to steroid or antiviral therapy. This case highlights an atypical presentation of VZV with orbital myositis preceding intracranial involvement.

DFT+U within the framework of linear combination of numerical atomic orbitals.

We present a formulation and implementation of the density functional theory (DFT)+U method within the framework of linear combination of numerical atomic orbitals (NAO). Our implementation not only enables single-point total energy and electronic-structure calculations but also provides access to atomic forces and cell stresses, hence allowing for full structure relaxations of periodic systems. Furthermore, our implementation allows one to deal with non-collinear spin texture, with the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect treated self-consistently. The key aspect behind our implementation is a su

Comparison of two Schwann Cell-Containing Orbital Tumors: Schwannoma and Ganglioneuroma.

Orbital tumors comprise a variety of diseases, although tumors of the peripheral nerves are rare. Of these, schwannoma is considered the most common entity, consisting histopathologically almost exclusively of Schwann cells. Another benign tumor containing Schwann cells is ganglioneuroma. Here, ganglion cells are histopathologically apparent in addition to the Schwann cell-containing stroma. Ganglioneuroma belongs to the group of neuroblastic tumors and can occur anywhere in the pathway of sympathetic ganglion cells. In this report, we present the disease courses as well as the findings of two

Tunable Spin and Orbital Edelstein Effect at (111) LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Interface.

Converting charge current into spin current is one of the main mechanisms exploited in spintronics. One prominent example is the Edelstein effect, namely, the generation of a magnetization in response to an external electric field, which can be realized in systems with lack of inversion symmetry. If a system has electrons with an orbital angular momentum character, an orbital magnetization can be generated by the applied electric field, giving rise to the so-called orbital Edelstein effect. Oxide heterostructures are the ideal platform for these effects due to the strong spin-orbit coupling an

Autonomous Trajectory Generation Comparison for De-Orbiting with Multiple Collision Avoidance.

Over the past four decades, space debris has been identified as a growing hazard for near-Earth space systems. With limited access to space debris tracking databases and only recent policy advancements made to secure a sustainable space environment and mission architecture, this manuscript aims to establish an autonomous trajectory maneuver to de-orbit spacecrafts back to Earth using collision avoidance techniques for the purpose of decommissioning or re-purposing spacecrafts. To mitigate the risk of colliding with another object, the spacecraft attitude slew maneuver requires high levels of p

Morphometric evaluation and classification of the superior orbital fissure on 3D MDCT images.

The anatomy of the superior orbital fissure is very important because of the spaces it connects, the regions it is adjacent to, and the structures it contains. We aimed to study the width, length and types of the structure, their change according to gender, body sides, and age. The fissure shape has many variations that are not easy to systematize. Therefore, it was aimed to classify them with various reference points determined for the first time, identify their types and determine their incidence. An objective and comprehensive classification was used on 3-dimensional images using multidetec

Safety of the inferolateral orbital access for filling the temporal region with the fanning technique.

INTRODUCTION: The anatomical complexity of the temporal region makes it so treatments with fill-ins are challenging due to high vascular risk. Techniques which provide safer procedures must be encouraged. GOAL: Suggest access to the temple through the inferolateral orbital region as a means for safer temporal fill-ins. METHODS: The fanning technique was plotted out not only via the conventional access (pretragal) but via the proposed one as well. The superficial temporal artery (STA) was mapped with ultrasound. The angles for each of the five retroinjection vectors were calculated in relatio

Anatomic and physiologic approach for trans-conjunctival needle decompression of orbital emphysema.

A 19-year-old with blunt trauma and repeated nose blowing presented with orbital emphysema and orbital compartment syndrome. Orbital emphysema is the abnormal presence of air within the orbit, typically secondary to trauma. Most cases will resolve with observation alone, however orbital compartment syndrome is a feared complication that necessitates urgent decompression. A superior fornix, trans-conjunctival approach was safely utilized to decompress the orbit while avoiding unwanted complications. Various decompression techniques have previously been described, most of which describe trans-pa

Sino-orbital cutaneous fistula with endoscopy guided technique: A case series.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Sino-orbital cutaneous fistula (SOCF) directly connects the sinus, orbital space, and outer skin. SOCF has been reported mostly as a complication of orbital exenteration, although it may occur from other infrequent etiologies. The patient can be treated using an endoscopy-guided technique which requires a multidisciplinary approach. CASE PRESENTATION: We present three cases of SOCF due to less common etiologies (mucocele, chronic inflammation, and malignancy) in young adult patients with a history of orbital and surgical complications. The endoscopy-guided techniq

Orbital Sarcoidosis Masquerading as Late Postoperative Blepharoplasty Complication: A Case Report.

Orbital sarcoid is a rare entity and may be the first manifestation of systemic sarcoidosis. We report a case of orbital sarcoidosis where diagnosis was complicated by a history of lower eyelid blepharoplasty. The patient presented with progressive swelling of the left lower eyelid, which was assumed to be a late complication of her surgery. After failing multiple treatments, MRI orbits was obtained and revealed an enhancing lesion in the left orbit inseparable from the lacrimal gland and inferior oblique muscle. Biopsy showed noncaseating granulomatous inflammation, and the patient was eventu
