Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) is a paramount therapeutic target to treat hypertension. ACE inhibitory peptides derived from food protein sources are regarded as safer alternatives to synthetic antihypertensive drugs for treating hypertension. Recently, marine organisms have started being pursued as sources of potential ACE inhibitory peptides. Marine organisms such as fish, shellfish, seaweed, microalgae, molluscs, crustaceans, and cephalopods are rich sources of bioactive compounds because of their high-value metabolites with specific activities and promising health benefits. Transplantation is the therapy of choice for an increasing number of patients. Organ transplantation is used to treat irreversible kidney, heart, lung and liver failure. Stem cell transplantation (previously called bone marrow transplantation) is used to treat leukaemia, bone marrow failure, severe combined immunodeficiencies and various congenital metabolic disorders. After organ transplantation, the recipient's immune system will recognise and reject the transplanted organ. T-lymphocytes transferred along with the stem cells in stem cell transplantation will attack the recipient. This paper

As increasingly aggressive chemotherapeutic regimens are used to treat malignancy, more patients will become susceptible to various opportunistic pathogens. Specifically, several fungal organisms previously viewed as relatively non-pathogenic are more frequently causing serious disease in these patients. Identification of these organisms is of paramount importance, as some are relatively resistant to standard antifungal therapies. We report a patient with disseminated cutaneous Pseudallescheria boydii, diagnosed from histopathological examination and culture of a skin biopsy specimen. Identifi

Ethanol has profound effects on cellular function, causes hormonal imbalance and either directly or indirectly results in nutritional deficiencies. Together with genetic and environmental factors these metabolic changes eventually cause functional and structural damage to liver, heart, central nervous system and other organs. In order to prevent organ injury the early recognition of the alcoholic patient is important. The combination of physician interview, questionnaire and laboratory markers of ethanol abuse [MCV, GGT, AST and others] is useful for the diagnosis of alcoholism. Abstinence is

OBJECTIVES: To estimate organ dose to major radiosensitive organs during pediatric body C-arm CBCT and determine normalized organ doses using a state-of-the-art equipment.
METHODS: This is a study performed utilizing physical anthropomorphic phantoms. Four anthropomorphic phantoms that simulate the average individual as a neonate, 1-year-old, 5-year-old, and 10-year-old child were used. Personalized Monte Carlo (MC)-based dosimetry was performed to estimate organ doses in children referred to thorax and abdomen C-arm CBCT acquisitions on a recently released latest generation C-arm CBCT system

Despite their dominance in many terrestrial ecosystems, the impact of ectomycorrhizal fungi on organic matter decomposition is notably variable across different ecological settings. Here we outline how the influence of ectomycorrhizal fungi on decomposition of belowground organic matter pools depends, not only on the traits of the ectomycorrhizal fungi, but also on the relative dominance of other interacting fungal guilds, in a manner that is predictable across wide gradients in soil fertility. Specifically, we propose that the dominant effect of ectomycorrhizal fungi shifts from 'priming' of

Considerable shortages in the supply of available organs continue to plague the field of solid organ transplantation. Despite changes in allocation, as well as the utilization of extended criteria and living donors, the number of patients waiting for organs continues to grow at an alarming pace. Xenotransplantation, cross-species solid organ transplantation, offers one potential solution to this dilemma. Previous extensive research dedicated to this field has allowed for resolution of xenograft failure due to acute rejection, leaving new areas of unresolved challenges as barriers to success in

Exposure to organic mercury compounds promotes primarily neurological effects. Although methylmercury is recognized as a potent neurotoxicant, its transfer into the central nervous system (CNS) is not fully evaluated. While methylmercury and thiomersal pass the blood-brain barrier, limited data are available regarding the second brain regulating interface, the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier. This novel study was designed to investigate the effects of organic as well as inorganic mercury compounds on, and their transfer across, a porcine in vitro model of the blood-CSF barrier for the

New legislation in Greece towards presumed consent for organ donation, effective as of June 2013, has come at a critical moment. This pilot study aims to explore awareness, specific concerns and intentions about the new organ donation framework among patients attending Greek general practices in a rural and urban setting. Only 2.6% of respondents had a donor card, a mere 9.6% was aware of new legislation, whereas only 3.8% considered that the public had been adequately informed. Higher income respondents were more likely to be aware that they would be considered organ donors upon death, unless

In this review, we describe the major milestones in the development of organ transplantation with a specific focus on hepatic transplantation. For many years, the barriers preventing successful organ transplantation in humans seemed insurmountable. Although advances in surgical technique provided the technical ability to perform organ transplantation, limited understanding of immunology prevented successful organ transplantation. The breakthrough to success was the result of several significant discoveries between 1950 and 1980 involving improved surgical techniques, the development of effecti

Before summarizing the experimental results presented herewith, a brief review is indicated of our study on follicular conjunctivitides existing in the different species of animals thus far examined. Spontaneous follicular conjunctivitis of monkeys and chimpanzees, which resembles the early, or follicular, stages of human trachoma, has been shown to be an infectious disease, and to arise from the action of a bacterium and not an ultramicroscopic virus (2, 10). A new species of organism, designated tentatively as Bacterium simiae, n.sp., and capable of reproducing granular lids in normal monkey

Whole organ perfusion decellularization has been proposed as a promising method to generate non-immunogenic organs from allogeneic and xenogeneic donors. However, the ability to recellularize organ scaffolds with multiple patient-specific cells in a spatially controlled manner remains challenging. Here, we propose that replacing donor endothelial cells alone, while keeping the rest of the organ viable and functional, is more technically feasible, and may offer a significant shortcut in the efforts to engineer transplantable organs. Vascular decellularization was achieved ex vivo, under control

Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive metabolic disease that belongs to the family of lysosomal storage disorders. The defective gene is CTNS encoding the lysosomal cystine transporter, cystinosin. Cystine accumulates in every organ in the body and leads to organ damage and dysfunction, including renal defects. Using the murine model for cystinosis, Ctns(-/-) mice, we performed syngeneic bone marrow cell (BMC), hematopoietic stem cell (HSC), and mesenchymal stem cell transplantation. Organ-specific cystine content was reduced by 57% to 94% in all organs tested in the BMC-treated mice. Confocal

A placenta constitutes a specific immune system that can protect a fetus against viral infections. We examined TNF, IFN and IL-6 production in organ cultures of human placenta and amniotic membrane. VSV replication and the cytokine production (TNF, IFN, IL-6) by human umbilical cord vein organ cultures and isolated endothelial cells were compared. We suggest that the local production of cytokines is responsible for the antiviral activity of placenta and endothelium.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a persistent autoimmune condition involving multiple organ systems. It is fundamentally driven by the dysregulation of the immune system. Under this condition, the immune system erroneously targets body tissues and induces a marked inflammatory immune response, ultimately leading to multisystem and multi-organ involvement. Mitophagy is a selective intracellular quality control mechanism that eliminates dysfunctional or redundant mitochondria and is crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis. In recent years, accumulating research has indicated that dysre

Although organ transplantation is a life-saving medical procedure, the challenge of posttransplant rejection necessitates safe and effective immune modulation strategies. Nanodelivery approaches may have the potential to overcome the limitations of small-molecule immunosuppressive drugs, achieving efficacious treatment options for transplant tolerance without compromising overall host immunity. This review highlights recent advances in biomaterial-assisted formulations and technologies for targeted nanodrug delivery with transplant organ- or immune cell-level precision for treating graft rejec

Otolith organs of the inner ear are innervated by two parallel afferent projections to the brainstem and cerebellum. These innervations were proposed to segregate across the line of polarity reversal (LPR) within each otolith organ, which divides the organ into two regions of hair cells (HC) with opposite stereociliary orientation. The relationship and functional significance of these anatomical features are not known. Here, we show regional expression of Emx2 in otolith organs, which establishes LPR, mediates the neuronal segregation across LPR and constitutes the bidirectional sensitivity fu

This paper explores the specific criticism of directed altruistic living organ donation that it creates a 'beauty contest' between potential recipients of organs. The notion of the beauty contest in transplantation was recently used by Neidich et al who stated that '[a]ltruism should be the guiding motivation for all donations, and when it [is], there is no place for a beauty contest'. I examine this beauty contest objection from two perspectives. First, I argue that, when considered against the behaviour of donors, this objection cannot be consistently raised without also objecting to other c

The metabolically active and perpetually remodeling calcium phosphate-based endoskeleton in terrestrial vertebrates sets the demands on whole-organism calcium and phosphate homeostasis that involves multiple organs in terms of mineral flux and endocrine cross talk. The fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-Klotho endocrine networks epitomize the complexity of systems biology, and specifically, the FGF23-αKlotho axis highlights the concept of the skeleton holding the master switch of homeostasis rather than a passive target organ as hitherto conceived. Other than serving as a coreceptor for FGF23, αKl

Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome is characterized by a failure of multiple endocrine organs and the presence of circulating organ-specific autoantibodies targeted against the failing organs. Here we describe a patient with autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type I with the endocrine manifestations of hypoparathyroidism, adrenocortical insufficiency, and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Long-standing hypoparathyroidism led to extensive calcification of the basal ganglia which resulted in the clinical presentation of an extrapyramidal movement disorder (choreoathetotic and hemiballistic hype
