Three cases of below-knee stump reconstruction, using cross-legged, free sole flap, free foot filleted flap, and island pedicle sole flap, were reported. The variability of the flap size provided satisfactory coverage as needed in all cases. The causes of amputation were acute trauma and chronic osteomyelitis. The contour of the stump, the sensory recovery, the preserved range of motion of the knee joint, and the long-term durability were satisfactory in these patients. Chronic Q fever has been associated with endocarditis, granulomatous hepatitis, and osteomyelitis but only rarely with pregnancy. The apparent predilection of Coxiella burnetii, the organism causing Q fever, for the human placenta suggests that chronic Q fever of pregnancy is due to placentitis. We describe a patient with chronic, clinically apparent Q fever in pregnancy and a successful outcome. Abscesses of the psoas muscle are due to a hematogenous dissemination, to the spread of infection from adjacent intestinal structures, to osteomyelitis of the spine or to tuberculous infection of a disc space. Statistical data for the period from 1985 to 1990 showed rise of primary invalidity due to traumas in most regions of the Ukraine. Taking into consideration the ratio of fractures in trauma structure we have analyzed invalidity on account of this kind of pathology. Retarded consolidation, multiple fractures and spine fractures are the main causes. Men aged below 45 prevailed among invalids. A previously well 59-year-old man developed necrotizing, invasive cellulitis and subsequent osteomyelitis at what was judged to be the site of a bite or sting. The pathogen isolated was Apophysomyces elegans. Eventually, in addition to treatment with intravenous amphotericin B, en bloc resection was required for cure. Although cat-scratch disease is not uncommonly treated by pediatricians, it is rarely seen by orthopaedists. In this review of cat-scratch disease, two cases with orthopaedic manifestations are high-lighted. Since 1923, eight cases of cryptococcosis have been described in Norway, all with meningeal affection. A distinct, solitary infiltration in the upper lobe of the right lung was discovered in a 68 year-old woman. The lobe was extirpated. Microbiological and histological investigations showed infection with Cryptococcus neoformans. No antimycotic treatment was given. Infectious complications of tracheotomy range from minor to potentially fatal. Three cases are presented: clavicular osteomyelitis; innominate artery blowout with mediastinitis; and the first reported case of necrotizing fasciitis involving the chest wall related to tracheotomy infection.
