Subclones were prepared in mice from T. b. brucei ILTat 1.4 parasites. Subclones which did not differentiate to stumpy forms in mice were highly virulent and did not stimulate detectable antibody responses. The suitability of 75-Se-labelled trypanosomes for the measurement of trypanosome replication rates in vivo was investigated. A mouse model system was used to study various aspects of host and parasite relationships in Trypanosoma vivax infections. Two schools in rural Tanzania were surveyed regarding the pupils' nutrition (weight and height), serum immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM, and IgE), autoantibodies, malaria antibodies, hepatitis B antigenemia, and fecal and urinary parasites.
