[Perception of parental attitudes and the level of female adolescents' self-esteem affected with anorexia nervosa].

AIM: The article's aim is to look for correlation between a parent - child relationship and the level of self-esteem in the perception of girls affected with anorexia nervosa (who meet the criteria of DSM-IV-TR). The differences in the perception of parental attitudes (of mothers and fathers) and self-esteem of girls suffering from anorexia nervosa and their healthy peers were also analyzed. METHOD: Two equally numbered groups of girls: the clinical group (30 persons affected with anorexia nervosa) and control group (30 healthy girls) in the 15-20 age range were examined. Two test were applie

Reproductive options for prospective parents in families with Huntington's disease: clinical, psychological and ethical reflections.

BACKGROUND Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative late onset disorder. This review of reproductive options aims to increase reproductive confidence and to prevent suffering in relation to family planning around HD and possibly other late onset neurodegenerative disorders. METHODS Selected relevant literature and own views and experiences as clinical geneticists, psychologists and ethicists have been used. RESULTS Possible options, with emphasis on prenatal diagnosis (PD) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to prevent the transmission of HD to the next gene

Parent and clinician preferences for location of end-of-life care: home, hospital or freestanding hospice?

BACKGROUND: Current options for location of end-of-life (EOL) care for children with cancer include home, hospital, and freestanding pediatric hospice (FSPH). However, access to these options varies greatly depending on geographical location. We aimed to determine bereaved parent and clinician preferences for location to EOL care and death. PROCEDURE: We administered questionnaires to 75 bereaved parents (response rate 54%) and 48 pediatric oncology clinicians (response rate 91%) at a large teaching hospital. Main outcome measure was parent and clinician ranking for preferred location of EOL

Parental use of antidepressant medication and family type in the risk for incident psychiatric morbidity in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression increases the risk for psychiatric morbidity in offspring but the effects of paternal depression and family type are less studied. METHODS: We assessed the effects of parental antidepressant use on offspring psychiatric morbidity in various family settings. RESULTS: Our register-based study followed 132637 children for incident psychiatric morbidity in 1998-2003. The highest risk for psychiatric morbidity was in children living with both parents on antidepressants or with a lone parent on antidepressants. We found little variation in the effects according to p

Parental overprotection engenders dysfunctional attitudes about achievement and dependency in a gender-specific manner.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that dysfunctional attitudes, cognitive vulnerability to depression, have developmental origins. The present study examined the effects of parental rearing on dysfunctional attitudes in three areas of life with special attention to gender specificity. METHODS: The subjects were 665 Japanese healthy volunteers. Dysfunctional attitudes were assessed by the 24-item Dysfunctional Attitude Scale, which has the Achievement, Dependency and Self-control subscales. Perceived parental rearing was assessed by the Parental Bonding Instrument, which has the Care and Prote

Help with "strings attached": offspring perceptions that middle-aged parents offer conflicted support.

OBJECTIVES: Middle-aged adults often provide beneficial support to grown children. Yet, in some relationships, grown children may feel beholden or intruded upon when they receive parental help. The purpose of this study was to examine such conflicted support in relationships between middle-aged parents and young adults. METHODS: Middle-aged parents (aged 40-60, n = 399) and their grown children (n = 592) participated. Parents rated perceptions of providing support and relationship quality with each child. Grown children indicated whether their mothers and fathers provided conflicted support a

Parental psychological distress during pregnancy and childhood cardiovascular development. The Generation R Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological distress during pregnancy might lead to higher fetal cortisol exposure, which subsequently leads to fetal cardiovascular developmental adaptations and cardiovascular dysfunction in later life. AIMS: We examined whether maternal and paternal psychological distress was associated with the cardiovascular outcome measurements in school age children. STUDY DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: In a population-based prospective cohort study among 4831 children, we assessed maternal and paternal psychological distress during pregnancy by questionnaire, using the Brief Symptom Inve

Parent health and functioning 13 months after infant or child NICU/PICU death.

BACKGROUND: After a child's death, parents may experience depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and increased risk for cancers, diabetes, psychiatric hospitalization, and suicide. Racial/ethnic differences are unknown. This longitudinal study investigated health and functioning of Hispanic, black, and white parents through 13 months after NICU/PICU death. METHODS: Parents (176 mothers, 73 fathers) of 188 deceased infants/children were recruited from 4 NICUs, 4 PICUs, and state death certificates 2 to 3 weeks after death. Deaths occurred after limiting treatment/withdrawing life su

Parental smoking during pregnancy and cardiovascular structures and function in childhood: the Generation R Study.

BACKGROUND: Foetal smoke exposure might lead to foetal developmental adaptations that permanently affect the cardiovascular system. We assessed the associations of both maternal and paternal smoking during pregnancy with childhood cardiovascular structures and function. METHOD: In a prospective cohort study among 5565 children, we examined whether maternal and paternal smoking during pregnancy are associated with blood pressure, carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and left cardiac structures and function in 6-year-old children. RESULTS: As compared with children from non-smoking mothers, chi

The association between prepregnancy parental support and control and adolescent girls' pregnancy resolution decisions.

PURPOSE: To examine the influence of prepregnancy parental support and control on adolescent girls' pregnancy resolution decisions. METHODS: Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were analyzed. Girls whose first pregnancy reported in wave IV occurred after wave I and before age 20 were included (n = 1,107). Participants self-reported pregnancy disposition (abortion, ectopic or tubal pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, live birth) for each pregnancy; responses were dichotomized as abortion versus other. Girls' perceptions of parental support and control were measured a

Sedation for intra-articular corticosteroid injections in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: the views of patients and their parents.

UNLABELLED: Intra-articular corticosteroid injections (IACI) are one of the mainstays of treatment for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The most important disadvantage of IACI is the pain associated with the procedure. Little is known about the children or parents' perception of this pain. This study was undertaken to determine whether patients and their parents prefer sedation to receive IACI or not and why. A survey form was presented to patients and/or their parents from January to March 2010 to evaluate their choice of anesthesiologist-controlled deep sedation (with sevoflurane

One-year follow-up of combined parent and child intervention for young children with ADHD.

Efficacies of the Incredible Years (IY) interventions are well-established in children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) but not among those with a primary diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We sought to evaluate 1-year follow-up outcomes among young children with ADHD who were treated with the IY interventions. Four- to 6-year-olds with ADHD (n = 49, 73% male) participated in 6 months of treatment using the IY parent and child interventions. Immediate posttreatment results indicated improvements in parenting, children's externalizing and attention problems, a…

Who counsels parents of newborns who are carriers of sickle cell anemia or cystic fibrosis?

Our objective was to describe: 1) physicians' knowledge of whether genetic counseling is provided to parents of newborns with sickle cell trait (SCT) or who are cystic fibrosis carriers (CFC), and 2) the prevalence of genetic counseling provided by primary care physicians. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive survey of 600 randomly-sampled Michigan-based pediatricians and family physicians, assessing physician knowledge of where and whether genetic counseling is received by parents whose newborns are carriers. Chi-squared testing determined associations between genetic counseling locatio

Theory of mind, severity of autistic symptoms and parental correlates in children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome.

This study addresses the theory of mind (ToM) ability of Asperger's syndrome/high-functioning autism (AS/HFA) children and their parents and the severity of the autistic symptoms. Fifty-three families, each consisting of a mother, father and a child, participated in this study (N=159). The 53 children in the sample included 25 children diagnosed with AS/HFA and 28 typically developing (TD) children. The Social Attribution Task (SAT) and tests assessing autistic symptoms were used. AS/HFA children had lower scores than TD children on three of the SAT indices (Person, ToM Affective, and Salience

Reliability of cancer family history reported by parents in a case-control study of childhood leukemia.

PURPOSE: To investigate the reliability of family history of cancer reported by parents of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and parents of healthy control children. METHODS: A total of 301 parents were selected based on positive or negative family history of cancer at baseline, case-control status, and gender of the respondent (mother or father). Baseline responses were compared with responses at the second interview using the same questionnaire. Reliability was measured using proportion of overall agreement, Cohen's kappa, and Cronbach's alpha; a logistic regression model was

Pro-inflammatory and Th2-type cytokine responses in PBMC in infants are associated with parental smoking.

BACKGROUND: During infancy, a disturbed cytokine balance leads to an atopic immune response. Many risk factors have been associated with the development of atopy. These include parental smoking, elevated cord blood IgE, early exposure to pets and family history of atopy, but the knowledge of their impact on cytokine balance is limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the cytokines induced by mitogen in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of infants at 3 months and 12 months of age and their potential association with fatty acid (FA) intervention, parental atopy, atopic dermatitis and parental smok
