BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the most common pathogen causing severe dehydrating diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. Any decision on implementation of rotavirus vaccination will be strongly influenced by the expected reduction in severe and therefore costly outcomes associated with rotavirus infection. The aim of this study was to provide data on hospitalization of young children with rotavirus infection in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis constitutes a heterogeneous group of disorders that present with acute muscular weakness. In this analysis, we discuss the aetiological factors that appear to be more common in the Indian population.
METHODS: From 1995 to 2001, 31 patients presented with periodic paralysis (mean age 34.5 years, range 11-68 years). Of the 31 patients, 19 were men. The clinical and laboratory data of these patients were analysed. Patients were investigated for possible secondary causes of hypokalaemla.

A statistical 30-year study of dermatomycosis in Sendai National Hospital (1968-1997) revealed many changes in the prevalent diseases: Tinea pedis and tinea unguium constantly increased during this period, and the ratio of the former associated with nail infection finally reached 30% of all tinea pedis patients. The dynamics of the occurrence of the dengue hemorrhagic fever in the 72 provinces of Thailand is investigated by performing a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) on spatiotemporal data. Using this technique, we are able to identify and select the contribution of different modes, selected according to the energy content, to the evolution of the epidemic during 14 years. Its incidence has steadily fallen after the abrupt cessation of its route of transmission (endocannibalism) in Papua New Guinea in the 1950s. The onset of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), and the unknown prevalence of infection after the extensive dietary exposure to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) prions in the UK, has led to renewed interest in kuru. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical performance of ceramic and indirect resin composite onlays over a 24-month period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of malignant breast tumors in the Province of Sassari, Sardinia (Italy) in the period 1992-2002 and to report the variations in comparison to the 1974-1985 period.
