Affective models of depression and anxiety: Extension to within-person processes in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Affective models (e.g., tripartite model) delineate shared and unique components of depression and anxiety. Specifically, negative affect is broadly associated with these symptoms, whereas low positive affect is relatively specific to depression and social anxiety. However, it is unknown how affect relates to symptoms as they occur naturalistically in daily life or as a within-person dynamic process. METHOD: 135 treatment-seeking adults completed a baseline assessment of trait affect and then rated current affect and symptoms (depression, social anxiety, panic, worry) three times

Trunk lean mass and its association with 4 different measures of thoracic kyphosis in older community dwelling persons.

BACKGROUND: The causes of age-related hyperkyphosis (HK) include osteoporosis, but only 1/3 of those most severely affected have vertebral fractures, suggesting that there are other important, and potentially modifiable causes. We hypothesized that muscle mass and quality may be important determinants of kyphosis in older persons. METHODS: We recruited 72 persons >65 years to participate in a prospective study designed to evaluate kyphosis and fall risk. At the baseline visit, participants had their body composition measures completed using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). They had kyp

Ideal cardiovascular health and psychosocial risk factors among Finnish female municipal workers.

AIMS: Ideal cardiovascular health has been defined by the American Heart Association as the absence of disease and the presence of seven key health factors and behaviours. However, little is known about the mental aspects associated with ideal cardiovascular health metrics. The objective of this study was to assess the relationships between psychosocial risk factors and ideal cardiovascular health metrics among Finnish women at municipal work units. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Finland among 732 female employees (mean±SD age 48±10 years) from ten work units in 2014. Ideal

Perception of facial profiles: influence of female sex hormones and personality traits.

OBJECTIVES: The observational study investigated whether women's perception of the facial profile is related to changes in sex hormones during the menstrual cycle and under the influence of personality traits. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Participants were heterosexual Caucasian normally menstruating women not using oral contraceptives (N = 30, aged 20-44 years). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The profile attractiveness was assessed by grading of thirteen men's and women's Caucasian profile distortions by a visual analogue scale (0 = least to 100 = most attractive) in the non-ovulating phase and ov

Covert person recognition: its fadeout in a case of temporal lobe degeneration.

Covert person recognition was investigated longitudinally over a three-year period in a patient suffering from "Crossmodal Familiar Person Agnosia", possibly due to a fronto-temporal dementia in its right temporal variant (Gentileschi et al., 2001). The progressive neuronal degeneration in the cortical regions critical for face recognition (viz., right infero-temporal areas) presented us with the opportunity to check Burton et al.'s (1991) and Farah et al.'s (1993) hypothesis on the dissociation between overt and covert face recognition in a neuropsychological condition which, however, is neur

Dilemmas of anonymous predictive testing for Huntington disease: privacy vs. optimal care.

Some persons at risk for Huntington disease (HD) seek predictive testing under the protection of anonymity to reduce the risk of insurance discrimination for themselves and their families. While Canadian and European health care systems seem to limit insurance discrimination to life and disability insurance, U.S. residents do not have national health insurance and are concerned about health insurance discrimination. Two persons residing outside Canada requested predictive testing anonymously. Their primary reason for doing so was to avoid the risks of medical insurance discrimination. After a

Active knee-ankle-foot orthosis with personalized knee trajectory compared with locked orthosis and multi-joint exoskeleton.

Assistive walking devices after spinal cord injury (SCI) should balance functional gait assistance with practical usability. This study presents a user-priority-guided pathway that links a needs-assessment survey to minimal actuation in a knee-ankle-foot orthosis (active KAFO) and objective-driven personalization of knee motion. A retrofit prototype with a single powered knee joint was implemented to preserve the orthosis-like form factor while enabling personalized, impedance-controlled knee motion. Personalization was formulated in OpenSim as a kinematic optimization, where a low-dimensional

Investigating the relationship between temporomandibular disorders and personality traits.

BACKGROUND: This observational study investigates the potential link between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and personality disorders. The Personality Inventory for Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM)-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF) was used to assess personality traits, while TMD diagnosis was established by combining dental and clinical history with specific screening questionnaires, including the TMD-Pain Screener. METHODS: The study sample was recruited based on inclusion criteria requiring the presence of TMD-related symptoms (pain, joint clicking or functional limitat

The relationship between personality dimensions and addiction type in women addicted to alcohol and opioids.

Personality traits significantly influence the development, persistence, and treatment outcomes of substance use disorders. Despite increasing addiction rates among women, sex-specific research remains limited. This study explores the relationship between addiction type and personality traits among inpatient women addicted to alcohol and opioids. A cross-sectional design included three groups: 80 women with alcohol addiction, 80 with opioid addiction, and 80 healthy controls. Participants completed the Revised Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-5-R) and the Revised NEO Personality Invent

Who Should be Controlled? The Role of Asymptomatic Individuals, Isolation and Switching in the Dominant Transmission Route in Classical and Network Epidemic Models.

We introduce two mathematical models for the spread of an SIR-type infectious disease, incorporating direct (person-to-person) and indirect (environment-to-person) transmissions, latent periods, asymptomatic infections, and different isolation rates for exposed, asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. The first model employs the classical homogeneous mixing approach, while the second uses the edge-based compartmental approach to consider heterogeneity in the number of contacts within the population through a random contact network. Key epidemiological metrics, including the basic reproductio

Occupational risk of COVID-19 by country of birth. A register-based study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure has been suggested to contribute to a disproportionate burden of COVID-19 among immigrants. We aim to assess this hypothesis in Norway. METHODS: In 2729 627 adults born in Norway, Somalia, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Turkey, we examined whether persons employed as taxi drivers, bus and tram drivers, child care workers, nurses, personal care workers in health, food service counter attendants, waiters/bartenders, cleaners and shop sale persons had a higher risk of COVID-19, from 1 April 2020 to 2 December 2020, compared with (i) Norwegian-born in the same o

Actual and volitional personality change across study abroad.

OBJECTIVES: According to personality development theories, the dramatic environmental transition of study abroad may form a crucible for personality change. Location, social roles, and cultural familiarity suddenly shift, potentially disrupting old habits and creating new ones, building upon the typical maturation occurring during college age. The current study poses questions about selection and socialization effects of study abroad on personality, actual and volitional change in personality, and whether adjustment to study abroad catalyzes change. METHOD: Longitudinal studies were conducted

Countertransference in the treatment of patients with personality disorders: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines how therapist emotional response/countertransference (CT) develops during treatment for patients with personality disorders (PDs) and how pre-treatment patient factors (severity of personality pathology, PD category, level of symptom distress) predict CT responses. Secondly, we explored associations between patient clinical outcome and CT. METHOD: A longitudinal, observational study including 1956 patients with personality pathology treated at psychotherapy units within specialist mental health services. Therapists' emotional response was repeatedly assessed by

Psychiatric disorders, rumination, and metacognitions in patients with type D personality and coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with both coronary heart disease (CHD) and type D personality, and whether these patients may benefit from psychotherapy that modifies metacognitive beliefs implicated in disorder maintenance. This study explored prevalence rates among these patients and associations between type D characteristics, rumination and metacognitions. METHODS: Forty-seven consecutive patients with CHD who scored positive for type D personality were included in this pre-planned study. Participants underwent structured clinical

Antisocial traits and neuroticism as predictors of suicidal behaviour in borderline personality disorder: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: The spectrum of suicidal behaviour (SB) is nuclear in the clinic and management of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The pathological personality traits of BPD intervene as risk factors for SB in confluence with other clinical and sociodemographic variables associated with BPD. The objective of this work is to evaluate the specific personality traits of BPD that are related to SB. METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational and retrospective study was carried out on a sample of 134 patients diagnosed with BPD according to DSM-5 criteria. The Millon-II, Zuckerman-Kuhlman and B

Examining sleep disturbance components as near-term predictors of suicide ideation in daily life.

Suicide ideation emerges and fluctuates over short timeframes (minutes, hours, days); however, near-term predictors of such fluctuations have not been well-elucidated. Sleep disturbance is a distal suicide risk factor, but less work has examined whether daily sleep disturbance predicts near-term changes in suicide ideation. We examined subjective sleep disturbance components as predictors of passive and active suicide ideation at the within-person (i.e., day-to-day changes within individuals relative to their own mean) and between-persons (individual differences relative to the sample mean) le

Responses to environmental enrichment are associated with personality characteristics in chestnut-bellied seed finches (Sporophila angolensis).

Environmental enrichment (EE) is used to promote natural behaviours in captive animals and may hold promise as a form of pre-release training, a strategy for improving coping skills of translocated birds. We investigated the use of EE to enhance foraging and vigilance behaviours of captive Sporophila angolensis, which may be related to post-release survival. We also evaluated whether consistent individual behavioural differences affected birds' responses to EE. We submitted 19 captive seed-finches to three short-term challenges: tonic immobility (TI), new environment (NE) and new object (NO) t
