A genetic analysis of the validity of the Hypomanic Personality Scale.

OBJECTIVES: Studies of mania risk have increasingly relied on measures of subsyndromal tendencies to experience manic symptoms. The measures of mania risk employed in those studies have been shown to predict manic onset, to show familial associations, and to demonstrate expected correlations with psychosocial variables related to bipolar disorder. However, little work has been conducted to validate such measures against biologically relevant indices, or to consider whether early adversity, which has been shown to be highly elevated among those with bipolar disorder, is related to higher scores

Moderating effects of resilience on depression in individuals with a history of childhood abuse or trauma exposure.

BACKGROUND: Influences of resilience on the presence and severity of depression following trauma exposure are largely unknown. Hence, we examined effects of resilience on depressive symptom severity in individuals with past childhood abuse and/or other trauma exposure. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study of 792 adults, resilience was measured with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, depression with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), childhood abuse with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and other traumas with the Trauma Events Inventory. RESULTS: Multiple linear regression modeling

Influence of the fusiform gyrus on amygdala response to emotional faces in the non-clinical range of social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety often involves a combination of hypervigilance and avoidance to potentially warning signals including the facial expression of emotions. Functional imaging has demonstrated an increase in amygdala response to emotional faces in subjects with social anxiety. Nevertheless, it is unclear to what extent visual areas processing faces influence amygdala reactivity in different socially anxious individuals. We assessed the influence of the fusiform gyrus activation on amygdala response to emotional faces in the non-clinical range of social anxiety. METHOD: Twenty-two norma

Multidimensional body image comparisons among patients with eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, and clinical controls: a multisite study.

Body image disturbance is considered a core characteristic of eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), however its definition has been unclear within the literature. This study examined the multidimensional nature of body image functioning among individuals with either anorexia nervosa (AN; n=35), bulimia nervosa (BN; n=26), or BDD (n=56), relative to female (n=34) and male (n=36) psychiatric controls. Participants were recruited from 10 treatment centers in the United States and England and completed psychometrically validated and standardized self-report measures of body image. O

A functional MRI study of amygdala responses to angry schematic faces in social anxiety disorder.

Neuroimaging studies using angry or contemptuous human facial photographic stimuli have suggested amygdala hyper-responsivity in social anxiety disorder (SAD). We sought to determine if an angry "schematic face" (simple line drawing) would evoke exaggerated amygdalar responses in SAD patients compared with healthy control (HC) subjects. Angry, happy, and neutral schematic faces were overtly presented to matched cohorts of 11 SAD and 11 HC subjects for passive viewing, whereas brain functional magnetic resonance imaging signal was measured at 1.5 Tesla. Voxel-wise analyses were performed using

On the association between sexual attraction and adolescent risk behavior involvement: Examining mediation and moderation.

On the basis of a large-scale survey of high-school youth, the authors compared adolescents reporting exclusively heterosexual, mostly heterosexual, bisexual, and predominately same-sex attraction based on high-risk involvement across a range of risk behaviors. Bisexual and same-sex attracted groups were characterized by heightened high-risk involvement relative to the other two groups. Mediation analysis was used to determine whether these group disparities were explained by a set of normative predictive factors spanning multiple life domains. Differences among a combined exclusively/mostly h

Suicidality in opioid-dependent subjects.

We determined suicide attempt characteristics in 160 opioid-dependent subjects. Three aspects of suicide vulnerability were also examined: familial aggregation of suicidal behaviors, degree of aggression/impulsivity, and smoking. Forty-eight percent of subjects had a personal history of suicide attempt. A personal history of suicide attempt was associated with an early onset of heroin use, but not with gender differences. A family history of suicide was a progressive risk factor for suicide attempt. Subjects with a personal history of suicide attempt had a higher degree of aggression/impulsivi

["Your child is hard of hearing" - a longitudinal study of parental distress].

BACKGROUND: In models, hearing impairment in children is linked to parental distress. Empiric data about coping with this stress is small, however, as there are virtually only cross section studies which we can refer to. METHODS: 124 mothers and fathers of 61 children with a hearing impairment, who had their first hearing aid fitted respectively, had been presented to the pre-examination for a Cochlear Implantation (CI). Over a period of two years five respectively six measurements of their psycho-social distress were taken. In addition, the speech status of the children was evaluated. RESUL

Mutual partner violence: mental health symptoms among female and male victims in four racial/ethnic groups.

This study examines racial/ethnic and sex differences in the prevalence of mutual intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental health symptoms. The authors asked 676 university students in heterosexual relationships if they had experienced IPV, coercive victimization, and/or perpetration as well as symptoms of depression, anxiety, hostility, and somatization. Analyses were conducted separately for female and male respondents in four racial/ethnic groups, totaling eight groups (female and male groups each for African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and European Americans). Development and evaluation of the Daily Assessment of Symptoms - Anxiety (DAS-A) scale to evaluate onset of symptom relief in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Fast-acting anxiolytics are important to patients and society. Measuring early onset, however, requires a sensitive and clinically responsive measure. This study develops and evaluates the psychometric properties of a new patient-reported instrument, the Daily Assessment of Symptoms - Anxiety (DAS-A), designed to detect reduction of anxiety symptoms in patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) during the first week of treatment. METHODS: Clinician interviews and patient focus groups were conducted to identify relevant constructs; discussions focused on early symptom improve

Chronic tics and Tourette syndrome in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic motor/vocal tics (CMVT) are both common disorders in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there have been few studies evaluating the differences between the OCD with TS and OCD with CMVT subgroups. This study was conducted in order to further investigate possible differences between the expression of the OCD phenotype in OCD with TS and that seen in OCD with CMVT. One hundred and fifty-nine outpatients referred to an OCD research program were evaluated using the following instruments: the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV; the Ya
