Memorability under pressure: Memorable images are not resilient to retrieval deadlines.

Image memorability denotes the consistent tendency for some images to be better remembered than others. Although often attributed to enhanced encoding and storage, we investigated whether high-memorability images are also retrieved more efficiently. To that end, three experiments introduced time pressure in retrieval by imposing strict response deadlines in old-new (Experiments 1 and 2) and two-alternative forced-choice (Experiment 3) recognition tests. We contrasted two competing hypotheses: the resilience hypothesis, which predicts that the retrieval of high-memorability images is robust eno…

Shear Stress and Pressure Homeostasis in the Eye's Aqueous Outflow Pathway.

Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible blindness. Many patients with glaucoma suffer from elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), due to impaired drainage of aqueous humor fluid from the eye, and all current treatments are designed to lower IOP, implicating dysregulation of IOP as an important clinical problem. Because IOP is maintained within a narrow range over a lifetime in a healthy eye, it is thought that mechanically-driven feedback loops within the eye maintain IOP homeostasis, and in fact, good evidence for such loops now exists. Here we revisit the fluid mechanics of aqueous h…

Impact of Baydur ratio correction on the reliability of esophageal pressure measurement.

Tidal changes in esophageal pressure (ΔPes) are used as a surrogate for pleural pressure changes (ΔPpl) to assess chest wall mechanics. The Baydur ratio evaluates pressure transmission and guides catheter positioning. The effects of correcting ΔPes using the Baydur ratio on the accuracy of ΔPpl estimation and its dependence on ventilation mode, spontaneous inspiratory effort, and body position remain unclear. In 10 pigs, ΔPpl was measured using intrapleural balloon catheters, whereas Pes was recorded at three esophageal locations in supine and prone positions. Animals underwent controlled and …

Laser shocking a shock wave for nonlinear summation of GPa pressures.

We present a tabletop method to investigate how tailored laser excitation can enhance shock wave generation in water. By delivering two spatiotemporally separated laser pulses focused into a confined liquid layer, we identify an optimized excitation condition that maximizes the resulting shock pressure. Remarkably, dual-pulse laser excitation leads to an overall shock pressure that far exceeds the sum of the shock pressures generated by the individual pulses. This nonlinear amplification reveals a previously unexploited laser-matter interaction regime that overcomes saturation limits in laser-…

Fingertip Pressure Feedback Increases the Perceived Length of a Handheld Object.

In haptics, supporting dynamic touch, the perception of object properties such as length and shape through wielding, remains a significant challenge, often requiring complex and bulky devices. This paper investigates whether the perceived length of a wielded physical object can be augmented using only dynamic cutaneous (pressure) feedback to the fingertips, motivated by the recent advancement of haptic gloves. We designed pressure feedback profiles inspired by the biomechanical changes in finger pressure that naturally occur during wielding. These profiles deliver sequential pressure stimuli t…

Role of Respiratory Pressure in Swallowing Function and Aspiration Risk in Parkinsonism.

Dysphagia is a prevalent and clinically significant non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonism, leading to aspiration pneumonia and increased morbidity. Respiratory muscle weakness has been suggested as a contributor to impaired airway protection, but its clinical implications in parkinsonism remain underexplored. This retrospective study investigated the association between maximal respiratory pressure and dysphagia-related outcomes in individuals with PD and atypical parkinsonism. A total of 98 cases who underwent both videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) an…

How to evaluate aromaticity under pressure? Benzene as a benchmark system.

Aromaticity is a fundamental concept in chemistry, central to understanding chemical stability, reactivity, and electronic structure. While traditionally examined under ambient conditions, recent studies have begun to probe its behavior in unconventional regimes, reflecting the diversification of reaction environments. Here, we investigate aromaticity under hydrostatic pressure, extending the range of external perturbations considered so far in aromaticity research. Using state-of-the-art quantum chemical methodologies designed to simulate pressure at the single-molecule level, we systematical…

Equation of State for Europium at High Pressures and Entropies in Shock Waves.

This work is devoted to the description of the thermodynamics of the condensed states of the rare-earth metal europium under intense mechanical and thermal loading in shock waves. A new model of the equation of state for metallic materials is proposed based on the characteristic function of entropy with volume and internal energy (per unit mass) as variables. Within the framework of this model, calculations of the thermodynamic characteristics of europium at high pressures and specific entropies were carried out, the results of which are presented in comparison with the available data from sho…
