Experiences of women seeking medical care for obstetric fistula in Eritrea: implications for prevention, treatment, and social reintegration.

This article presents findings from qualitative interviews with women seeking medical care for obstetric fistula in Eritrea. The interviews were designed to inform programme design for the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula. Interviews were conducted with 11 new fistula repair patients, 15 women returning for follow-up for their fistula repairs, and five accompanying family members at Massawa Hospital in the Northern Red Sea Zone of Eritrea during November-December 2004. The women described long delays in accessing emergency obstetric care due to delayed recognition of the seriousne

Understanding Behavioural Determinants of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Prevention Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke disproportionately affect culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. In Australia, CALD describes communities that differ from the dominant population by language, ethnicity and/or cultural beliefs and practices. CALD status often intersects with social disadvantage, including lower socioeconomic position, experiences of discrimination and reduced access to culturally safe health services, contributing to inequities in cardiovascular risk and outcomes. Understanding how these factors influence engagement in CVD and stroke preve

Religion, faith, and spirituality influences on HIV prevention activities: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Strategies to increase uptake of next-generation biomedical prevention technologies (e.g., long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)) can benefit from understanding associations between religion, faith, and spirituality (RFS) and current primary HIV prevention activities (e.g., condoms and oral PrEP) along with the mechanisms which underlie these associations. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Academic Search Premier, Web of Science, and Sociological Abstracts for empirical articles that investigated and quantified relationships between RFS and primary HIV preven

Discontinuation of HIV oral pre-exposure prophylaxis: findings from programmatic surveillance within two general population HIV programs in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: As oral PrEP scales up in Nigeria, information about uptake, use pattern and client preference in a real-world, implementation setting is invaluable to guide refining service provision and incorporation of oral PrEP and other prevention measures into routine health services. To add to this body of knowledge, our study examines factors associated with discontinuation of PrEP among HIV negative individuals across two large scale programs in Nigeria. METHODS: Using program implementation data from two large-scale HIV projects in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in Nigeria between Jan

Exploring barriers and opportunities to improve osteoporosis care across the acute-to-primary care interface: a qualitative study.

UNLABELLED: This qualitative study interviewed general practitioners, patients, and FLS clinicians and identified key challenges facing stakeholders seeking to improve post-fracture osteoporosis care. Local policies and care pathways as an initial strategy may address information and service delivery issues across the acute-primary care divide. INTRODUCTION: Fracture liaison services (FLS) can be effective for secondary fracture prevention, but long-term adherence to therapies remains suboptimal. Few studies have explored how services manage the transition between tertiary and primary post-fr

Stayin' Alive in Little 5: Application of Sentiment Analysis to Investigate Emotions of Service Industry Workers Responding to Drug Overdoses.

The opioid epidemic has increasingly been recognized as a public health issue and has challenged our current legal, social, and ethical beliefs regarding drug use. The epidemic not only impacts persons who use drugs, but also those around them, including people who do not expect to witness an overdose. For example, in the commercial district of Little 5 Points, Atlanta, GA, many service industry workers have become de facto responders to opioid overdoses when a person experiences an opioid-involved overdose in their place of employment. To provide additional insights into >300 pages of intervi

Assessment of essential newborn care services in secondary-level facilities from two districts of India.

India faces a formidable burden of neonatal deaths, and quality newborn care is essential for reducing the high neonatal mortality rate. We examined newborn care services, with a focus on essential newborn care (ENC) in two districts, one each from two states in India. Nagaur district in Rajasthan and Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh were included. Six secondary-level facilities from the districts-two district hospitals (DHs) and four community health centres (CHCs) were evaluated, where maximum institutional births within districts were taking place. The assessment included record review

Risk factors for physical restraint use with children and youth in community and inpatient mental health settings in Ontario.

INTRODUCTION: The application of physical restraints in child and youth mental health settings remains controversial. Physical restraints are control interventions involving the use of a physical device or manual holding to restrict a young person’s movement. Although their use is permitted to manage risky behaviours, physical restraints can cause severe physical and psychological harm in children and youth. Existing literature on restraint use focuses on children and youth in inpatient settings, while research on its use in community health settings remains limited. METHODS: The current study

International programs and veterinary public health in the Americas--success, challenges, and possibilities.

The veterinary public health (VPH) program at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) began in 1949 when an arrangement with the newly founded World Health Organization made PAHO its Regional Office for the Americas to serve as the specialized health agency both for the Organization of American States and the United Nations. It started as a Section of Veterinary Medicine to help eradicate rabies on both sides of the US-Mexico border, and PAHO grew to be the biggest VPH program in the world. By providing a political and technical base, PAHO assisted its member states to organize and develop

Utilization of Training for Nurses in the Prevention of Adolescent Violence Risk Behaviors: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent violence is a significant public health issue that negatively affects the psychological well-being and social functioning of adolescents. These tendencies generally evolve from problems in anger management and stress tolerance related to inherent or external contributors including familial background, interactions with friends, and school atmosphere. Nurses, particularly in primary health care settings, are strategically positioned to contribute to violence prevention through early identification, intervention, and capacity-building programs for adolescents. However, evi
