Neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1) is a neurodevelopmental disorder and tumor syndrome caused by loss of function mutations in the neurofibromin gene (Nf1) and is estimated to affect 100,000 people in the US. Behavioral alterations and cognitive deficits have been found in 50-70% of children with Nf1 and include specific problems with attention, visual perception, language, learning, attention, and executive function. These behavioral alterations and cognitive deficits are observed in the absence of tumors or macroscopic structural abnormalities in the central nervous system. No effective treatmen

The role of parental antisocial behavior in the development of adolescent psychopathology is well established in the literature. However, less is known about the role of parental psychopathic traits in offspring psychopathology. Adolescents (N = 210; boys = 107) and their parents participated in a study measuring parental antisocial behavior, psychopathic traits (i.e., callous-unemotional traits, impulsive-irresponsibility, and grandiosity), and adolescent psychopathology, including depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and c

Human cooperative behavior has long been thought to decline under adversity. However, studies have primarily examined perceived patterns of cooperation, with little eye to actual cooperative behavior embedded within social interaction. Game-theoretical paradigms can help close this gap by unpacking subtle differences in how cooperation unfolds during initial encounters. This study is the first to use a child-appropriate, virtual, public goods game to study actual cooperative behavior in 329 participants aged 9-16 years with histories of maltreatment (n = 99) and no maltreatment (n = 230) while

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a disruptive behavior disorder characterized by a pattern of angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant behavior, or vindictiveness lasting for at least six months. Children and adolescents with ODD may have trouble controlling their temper and are often disobedient and defiant toward others. There are no tools specifically designed for diagnosing ODD, but multiple questionnaires can aid in diagnosis while assessing for other psychiatric conditions. ODD is often comorbid with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, and mood diso

Each year in the US, ∼1.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Victims of TBI can suffer from chronic post-TBI symptoms, such as sensory and motor deficits, cognitive impairments including problems with memory, learning, and attention, and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, irritability, aggression, and suicidal rumination. Although partially associated with the site and severity of injury, the biological mechanisms associated with many of these symptoms - and why some patients experience differing assortments of persistent maladies - are largely unknown.

Family conflict is known to have detrimental impacts on the social development of young children. An important issue in counseling parents and the development of intervention for children is the extent to which other family environmental conditions are the path through which conflict impacts children's development. This study examined two maternal parenting behaviors (harsh discipline and warmth) that may alter the impact of interpartner conflict on child social development and behavior in a large (n = 440 girls, n = 451 boys) sample of ethnically diverse, low-income families of preschool chil

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is well documented in the treatment of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia; however, little is known about the efficacy of group treatment. The purpose of this open study is to investigate the benefits of a combination of the major cognitive and behavioral techniques used in the several specific versions of CBT thus far developed, in a psychotherapeutic group approach for panic and agoraphobia. Seventy-six outpatients meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition, revised (DSM-III-R; American Psychiatric Association,

Biofeedback can improve cutaneous problems that have an autonomic nervous system component. Examples include biofeedback of galvanic skin resistance (GSR) for hyperhidrosis and biofeedback of skin temperature for Raynaud's disease. Hypnosis may enhance the effects obtained by biofeedback. Cognitive-behavioral methods may resolve dysfunctional thought patterns (cognitive) or actions (behavioral) that damage the skin or interfere with dermatologic therapy. Responsive diseases include acne excoriée, atopic dermatitis, factitious cheilitis, hyperhidrosis, lichen simplex chronicus, needle phobia, n

Psychotherapy has shifted from long-term to short-term approaches, which have been found to be effective for the treatment of specific psychiatric disorders. These psychotherapy interventions (primarily behavior therapy, CBT, and IPT) have been found useful in presenting an educational framework for disorders and the treatment rationale for intervention programs. Short-term and maintenance empirical data support the effectiveness of using behavior therapy and CBT as adjunctive interventions with medications for bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia. In major randomized clinical trials, psychoth

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the hypothesis that children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) would have more social and emotional problems than case-control classmates.
METHODS: Using a case-control design, children with JRA (n = 74), ages 8-14, were compared with case-control classmates (n = 74). Peer relationships, emotional well-being, and behavior, based on peer-, teacher-, parent-, and self-report scores on common measures, were compared using analysis of variance.
RESULTS: Relative to case-control classmates, children with JRA were similar on all measures of social functioning and b

Agitation and other noncognitive abnormalities in patients with Alzheimer's disease are present in at least 50% of patients and are a serious problem for caregivers. Agitation can be divided into aggressive agitation, physically nonaggressive agitation, and verbal agitation. Persecutory delusions of suspiciousness and stealing are the most common psychotic symptoms. Auditory and visual hallucinations are also associated with delusions. Similar to delusions are misidentifications, which are false beliefs probably secondary to agnosia. They occur in one third of patients with dementia of the Alz

The therapeutic success of physician-patient interactions depends in large part on how physicians interpret and respond to patients' implicit and explicit messages. Using a hypothetical vignette, in which a patient refuses to comply with a recommended therapeutic regimen, we found that first-year medical students with no classroom training in medical interviewing implicitly recognized that the situation called for face preserving or polite linguistic behavior. Ninety percent of them used culturally sanctioned politeness forms to repair the conversational breakdown depicted in the vignette. The

The display of acting-out behaviors in the form of aggression and property destruction represent serious management problems displayed by many developmentally disabled persons. The present study evaluated the application of reinforcement and isolation time-out procedures to treat severe aggressive/destructive behavior of a 15-year-old multi-impaired rubella child. In addition to documenting intervention effects, this study provided a component analysis of the reinforcement and time-out procedures, evaluated maintenance of treatment gains, and obtained measures of staff acceptability. BACKGROUND: Excessive crying, sleeping, and feeding problems in early childhood are major stressors that can result in parents feeling socially isolated and having low self-efficacy. Affected children are a risk group for being maltreated and developing emotional and behavioral problems. Thus, the development of an innovative and interactive psychoeducational app for parents of children with crying, sleeping, and feeding problems may provide low-threshold access to scientifically based information and reduce negative outcomes in parents and children.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate whether

Sexual risk behaviors by people living with HIV (PLHIV) can result in secondary HIV transmission and other health problems. Given the dearth of research on age differences in sexual behaviors among PLHIV, the objective of the study is to compare sexual risk behaviors and related factors among PLHIV by age groups. Data used in the current study were derived from a cross-sectional survey conducted from 2012 to 2013 in Guangxi, China. PLHIV were selected randomly from 12 sites with the largest number of HIV/AIDS cases. The 2,987 PLHIV completing the survey were included in the study. Participants

Human automation interaction (HAI) systems have thus far failed to live up to expectations mainly because human users do not always interact with the automation appropriately. Trust in automation (TiA) has been considered a central influence on the way a human user interacts with an automation; if TiA is too high there will be overuse, if TiA is too low there will be disuse. However, even though extensive research into TiA has identified specific HAI behaviors, or trust outcomes, a unique mapping between trust states and trust outcomes has yet to be clearly identified. Interaction behaviors ha

Infants exposed to alcohol prenatally, even when they do not suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), may be at high risk for many of the negative outcomes typically found among children of alcoholics including hyperactivity and other behavioral and learning problems. A series of studies are described designed to investigate the incidence and persistence of central nervous system (CNS) related behavioral alterations in three groups of infants born to low SES black women: (1) those who never drank in pregnancy; (2) those who drank at an average of 12 ounces of absolute alcohol (AA) per week th

Background: Adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) face considerable psychosocial demands that may increase vulnerability to diabetes-specific disordered eating behaviors. This study investigated the relationships among diabetes-specific disordered eating behaviors, social anxiety, social appearance anxiety, and psychological resilience in adolescents with T1D. Methods: This cross-sectional and correlational study included 176 adolescents diagnosed with T1D. Data were obtained using the Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised (DEPS-R), the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A), the Socia

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders are associated with severe negative social and health-related outcomes. Evidence has accumulated that long-term substance use is associated with alterations in social interaction behavior, which likely contributes to the vicious cycle of substance use disorder. However, little is known about whether these social problems originate from contextual factors only or also from the substance use itself-in other words, if they are predisposed or substance induced.
METHODS: We studied the causation behind behavioral alterations of substance users over a 9-year peri
